Chapter IV: The Man In The Mirror
Day in, night out, Jodi was a busy man since declaring his partake in the upcoming 2027 NFL draft. After the college season had wrapped up and the USC Trojans had hoisted the national championship over Nebraska, Jodi had tuned the world out and zoned in on his footwork to draft day. Out of the gate, Jodi got in contact with an agent, signing with Roc Nation Sports, then took off for Indiana, showing off for the scouts at the combine and college pro day afterwards. With the scouts no less than impressed, team clubs reached out for personal drills and interviews and everything was looking up for the young quarterback.
Exhausted from the grueling regiments, there was only a month between him and draft day, four weeks was more than enough time to rest up and get ready camps, wherever they be after his fate is decided. Until then, Jodi decided to head back home to Danville, pay visit to his mother and the town he grew too big for. Danville was a bittersweet territory, coming home, hoping to see all the joyous smiles of people he grew around, hoping to see familiar faces, mainly Tyrone, praying everything was a stagnant dream, but a lot has changed since he's left. Most of the people he grew up around either withered away or transferred to senior homes. His peers, all outgrew Danville, even Prisha.
Though he had no intentions of running into her, he learned that after her mother and child was in a tragic scaffolding accident, she won her lawsuit and packed up, never to be heard of again. No doubt Jodi felt for Prisha, but the bad memories felt more like karma, but not on that level. Life is cruel sometimes...
From the cooking that took place in the inescapable home, Jodi had awoken from the somber slumber with his nostrils raided by the savory aroma. With the overpowering scent of bacon and brewed coffee freshly made. Getting out of bed and stretching, he takes a peek out the window, noticing the window seal with snow stacked against it, even more, a light cast of flurries fell to the trees and streets, trickling down and replacing the mild snow that was already thawing away from the climate temperature. All the years he lived here, rarely has it ever snowed, yet, it was always a welcoming pleasantry. After utilizing the bathroom, cleaning the sleep crust out his eyes, freshening up both teeth and body in the shower, Jodi followed the potent aroma to the kitchen where he greeted his mother, Cassia.
"Good morning."
"Good morning to you sunshine, you're finally awake."
Jodi looks at the clock on the microwave, realizing it's nearly 10AM, "yeah, didn't mean to sleep in this late, but my body still calls for recovery."
"No worries, rest up as much as you can, I know you deserve it. You know it makes me happy to just hear you climb down those stars and make your way to breakfast."
"You're too nostalgic, I was here almost two years ago, Ma."
"I know, but it's been a long time for me, having you here since you were a big head kid, just took some time to get used to."
"Hey, I've grown into my head, thank you very much", Jodi playfully retorted.
"That you have. You've grown to be a fine and strong young man. And it seems like your appetite has grown as well", Cassia mentions as Jodi clears the counter side of food consisting of homemade french toast, a vegetable omelette, turkey bacon and a few hash browns. "It's a good thing I've eaten already", she joked.
"I'm still a growing boy, Ma, it's not everyday I eat like this. Most days were bagels and cereal. Breakfast like this? Definitely taking advantage of it."
"Well, I'm happy to here that it won't go to waste." Cassia takes a moment to take a couple sips of her coffee, "so, what's on the agenda while you're here? Not many of your friends, if any has stuck around in Danville."
"Yeah, this place is a ghost town. Crazy how much changed in such little time, all these new faces around here. Either way, I got in touch with my old coach at the high school, asked me to come by and help out with the spring training."
"Oh, that's nice, look at you already trying to give back. That's sweet of you."
"I got about two weeks to spare, maybe I can give a few pointers, help find the next Jodi Rogue out the bunch", Jodi says with a smug.
"That'll be finding a needle in a haystack, but I'm sure your coach would appreciate the help from an aspiring figure who's going to make the pros soon. If anything, it'll give the boys there something to latch onto and keep the narrow path."
"That's the ideal for me. But it should be a fun little coaching experience for me. Who knows, if the NFL don't pan out, maybe I could give a crack at coaching, who knows."
"Never hurts to have a back up plan. How're things with you and Tiffany?"
"We're good. Things going smoothly, can't complain. Met her parents not long ago, really nice people. Actually, her parents came to the ACC championship game in North Carolina and watch me play, her pops is a big fan of mine."
"Really now? I guess it didn't take much for you to win them over with their daughter."
"Not really, but he's still a Dad, and Dad is what Dad does. He made it clear that he wants nothing but the best for her, and I completely agree with him. He wasn't too harsh on me, but he still let me know where he stood."
"I see. Well, I guess things are pretty serious between you two. I'm happy you found someone in your life, Jodi. You look much upbeat about things since I've last saw you and your dealings with Prisha.
"Thanks Ma, but as much as I feel sorry for your fortunes of late, please don't bring her up. That's still bad news with me."
"I hear you, Jodi, but perhaps it's time you forgive and forget. Move on from it wholly."
"That's why I'm with Tiffany", Jodi responded after wolfing down the last bit of his breakfast. "She's been really good to me and I can't thank Prisha enough for doing what she did so lessons can become blessings."
"Amen to that, son. Hopefully Tiffany isn't one of those types that's with you for your money. I know back in my day, women use to go to college to their husband, not an education."
"I had my reserves about that too. I mean, even though I got it like that from those NILs, she's been pretty respectful about my finance. We go on dates, do some shopping and whatever, but she haven't given me any indication that she's trying to run my pockets."
"Yeah, well, females have their ways of discretion. You just be careful with all the money you're going to come into. Money changes people."
"And here I am just trying to save up for a rainy day like you taught me to."
"So, you do use those ears for something", Cassia joked. "Well, son, lock up when you're finish here, I have several errands to run, I should be back before dinner time. I haven't done any real shopping yet, so if you're back before I am, there's a number restaurant brochures on the refrigerator to peruse."
"Aight ma, no problem, I'll probably just pick something up on the way back, you just be safe out there."
With that, Cassia departed from the table, kissing Jodi on the forehead before grabbing her keys from the usual tray where Jodi's resided and disappeared into the world. Jodi had a few hours to kill before making his way to his former high school, thus Jodi spent some time on the computer in his room, reading article after article online about the death of his best friend, Tyrone, as all traces of information and clues ran cold on the trail. Even with all the time that has passed, Jodi keeps his thoughts of alive, wanting nothing more than to see the murderer brought to justice. Though nothing caught his interest, time had called for Jodi to make his appearance to the school and help the future more than he could for the past.
The first day of spring training led to jersey signings and photo ops with the freshmen and coaches. Since Jodi's senior year at Monte Vista, the Mustangs haven't won a championship then, making that one all the special and Jodi a bonafide legend in Danville.
The 2023 Audi e-tron GT, a parting gift from the Woodson family, for previous damages. Jodi couldn't stand the sight of the car, given what it stood for, but the car done no harm to him, and it had it uses. Though left behind for his mother to use, the car had less than a thousand miles, technically still brand new after three years. Either way, if Cassia had not much use for it, Jodi had all intent of gifting it away, all ties of Prisha was to be non-existent.
On his way home, Jodi stops by an Italian restaurant, Piatti, ordering beef lasagna, prawn chitarra and two negroni classico to go. The owner made it his business to have his meal on the house as Jodi was appreciative for the hometown discount.
Back in the car and arriving home, Jodi collects the freshly made order and drinks, exiting the car, but not before noticing someone at the front door. It was a dead giveaway that it was nobody the household had known because neighbors and friends knew to approach the side door.
"Hey, can I help you?" Jodi mildly shouted at the figure who turned his attention to his voice.
The person revealed to be a man from the distance as Jodi closed the gap looked hesitant, seeing Jodi walk towards him. Taking slow steps down off the porch, the male figure showed off a feint smile as his hands twiddled with a hat in between, appearing nervous.
"Hi, I was just looking for the residence here, seem no one was home until you showed up."
"Yeah, we were out for the day. Do I... Know you from somewhere?"
"Uh, no... No, you don't."
"You know my mother then?"
"... Your mother?... Oh, right... Yes, uh.. Actually, I was looking for you... Joseph..."
Hearing that name put Jodi's alertness on ten, making the hair on his arm stand. Joseph, Jodi's real name, but none called him so except Jodi for short."
"How do you know that name? Who are you? And why are you looking for me?", Jodi intently asked.
The scruffy-looking elder, his skin has seen better days from the cracks between the pores. The face suited a dark ash in the groomed beard and around the sides of his finger wave fade. His eyes though, his eyes brewed with the same amber as Jodi's. With a tight lip and a big sigh, the unknown man stared Jodi in his eyes as Jodi awaited the answers to his question.
"Joseph... My name is Donovan... Donovan Rogue. I am your father..."
