Coach Augustine lambasts defense, calls for "swift changes"
Written by Veronica Downs | SMU Daily

After two unfortunate upset losses to Georgia Tech and Arkansas, head coach Nico Augustine has torn into his defense, namely the secondary. It all begun with his post-game press conference after SMU's frustrating 45-31 loss to the Razorbacks.

"I've never seen a group of men who have decided to dedicate themselves to playing college football play so soft in my life," he began. "We can't get off the goddamn field on third-and-long situations because we can't make a damn tackle? You've got to be kidding me. These guys are genuinely scared to make physical contact. It terrifies me."

This comes after Arkansas quarterback Walker White threw for an astonishing 482 passing yards and five touchdowns through the air. Number one wide receiver Courtney Crutchfield had 206 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns while Andy Jean had 10 catches and his own 100+ receiving yard day himself.

"These guys were talking big during camp, about how 'the ACC didn't respect them' and 'we deserved to have some Pre-season All-ACC guys', and to tell the truth - I haven't seen a single one this season. It's an embarrassment to the work we put in. It's an embarrassment to our culture. It's an embarrassment to me."

Number one cornerback Marcellus Barnes Jr. didn't shy away from commenting about his head coach's comments on his position group. "I get it. We've been bigging ourselves up all season and we were the ones that lost our Top 25 ranking. We did that. The offense did their job and we didn't. We have to take a long, hard look at ourselves in the morning."

The team is expecting to sit William Nettles in favour of redshirt junior Grant Griffin after Nettles was thoroughly beaten all throughout the game. Nettles opted not to comment, instead storming out after the game ended.

"Grant gives us a new look," said defensive coordinator Kerry Abraham, who has been seen as hot and cold due to his impressive blitz packages that leads the ACC in sacks but statistically, the worst defense in the conference by far. "William is still very much in the picture, but he will be the first to admit he had a pretty tough outing. He'll earn his role back and excel in any role we give him going forward."

The team travels to New Orleans this upcoming weekend for an ACC matchup against Tulane.

Tulane a good team to get the rebound dub and get the defense back on track

Semonza was a killer for me in 25, but doesn't have the same ratings in 26. Should be light work
