Reigning Heisman Trophy winner Raynor to sit out Bowl game, Augustine weighing Minnesota job
By Olivia Scott | Jonesboro Newsletter

For the first time since he stepped foot on campus, the Arkansas State Red Wolves will prepare for a game without quarterback Jaylen Raynor playing.

It was announced in a joint decision between Raynor, offensive coordinator Nico Augustine, and newly-minted Bear Bryant Award winner, head coach Griff McCarley, that Raynor will not suit up for the Red Wolves matchup against the San Jose State Spartans in the Myrtle Beach Bowl while he prepares for the NFL Combine.

"Jaylen [Raynor] has given this program more than we could ever ask for," commented Augustine in a statement released by the university's athletic department. "He's our all-time leader in passing yards now, he's our very first Heisman Trophy winner. He has more than earned sitting a game out to prepare for his very bright NFL future. We came to a decision as a unit not to risk his health. We couldn't be prouder of him."

The expectation is that backup and forecasted future starter, Matt Chadwick, will start in the bowl game. He has gotten garbage time minutes over the season after transferring in from Miami last season.

Star running back Telly Johnson Jr. will be "full-go" according to Coach Augustine after rumors swirled he would also sit out the game. One questions if he is only playing to attempt to break Arkansas State's single-season rushing record. Johnson Jr. has 1,190 rushing yards while the record was set in 2002 by Danny Smith, with 1,390. It would take one big game, but that isn't above the talented Johnson Jr.'s ability.

Speaking of Augustine, the coach reportedly holds offers from Minnesota and Fresno State to become their head coach and reportedly is still in talks with Ohio State after the Buckeyes fired Ryan Day. Also in the coaching hunt, shockingly, is the #9 ranked Texas A&M. Mike Elko, their head coach, announced he will be heading to the NFL to join the New Orleans Saints after their results in the College Football Playoff.

Arguably, so is Jaylen Raynor winning the Heisman. My thought process will be revealed when Nico's future is revealed. But, I hear what you're saying.

I see both sides of this. On one hand, woud the Ark State OC be offered the Ohio State HC job? No. On the other, this is also a video game done for our own enjoyment. Is Kennesaw State or Coastal Carolina (can't put the Dukes in there :bazechief:) going to be crashing the CFP anytime soon? Also nah.

I think the biggest downside - outside of realism - to jumping to Ohio State so soon is there really isn't anywhere to go from there. At that point, it'd just be an Ohio State chise. I think Freso State would take a season or two to build up, but another weak conference. If you were tallying votes, I'd say Minnesota. Solid program in a good conference. You'll get the boost to the recruiting grades and prestige, but still have a tough road in the B10.

Congrats on the Heisman, shame you couldn't sneak into the playoff

I suppose the argument for the Ohio State move would be that they have fallen on hard times. Not really a threat for the CFP anytime soon. I dont think they have beaten Michigan since I started this chise. Always in the weekly wrap-ups for losing key games. Ryan Day is up out of here. Meanwhile, you have this OC who has slid into Ark-State and dominated. Only lost three games in two years, conducted the nation's most potent offense, and turned a fringe Power 5 QB into a Heisman winner.

Not saying Ohio State is happening - we all know I like to keep it pretty realistic over here. But, just my two cents.
