The defense has been horrible, trying to sort it out. I've conceded 12 goals in 4 games...

Garnacho Injury to Prompt Lineup Change, Loan Recalls

A dirty tackle from Andy Robertson in the Liverpool match has put Garnacho out for 2 months with a broken metatarsal.

Manchester, England — Manchester United’s dramatic 4–3 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford may have come at a heavy cost. Star winger Alejandro Garnacho suffered a broken metatarsal following a reckless challenge from Andy Robertson late in the second half, an injury expected to sideline the Argentine for several months.

The blow comes at a turbulent time for Rúben Amorim’s side, who have shown attacking promise but defensive instability in the early weeks of the Premier League campaign, conceding 12 goals in their opening four matches. In response, Amorim has announced a tactical overhaul: United will transition to a 3-5-2 system designed to tighten defensive structure while maintaining their attacking threat.

The shift will see Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, and Victor Lindelof form a back three protected by dual holding midfielders—Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo—providing greater solidity in central areas.

Up front, Marcus Rashford has been recalled from his loan at Chelsea to partner Rasmus Hojlund in a dynamic front two, offering pace and directness in transition. Jadon Sancho, recalled from Aston Villa, will slot into central midfield behind captain Bruno Fernandes, operating as a creative link between the lines.

The tactical adjustment has also prompted a reshuffle in squad numbers to reflect the new hierarchy and positional roles:
  • Rashford reclaims his iconic #10 shirt upon return.
  • Sancho takes #18, filling the creative midfield role behind Fernandes.
  • Mason Mount switches to #17, moving into a right wingback position to cover for Garnacho’s absence.
  • Amad Diallo, expected to start on the left flank as a converted wingback, takes over the #11 shirt.
  • Antony moves to #21, shifting into the backup LWB role
The system change marks a clear pivot in Amorim’s early tenure. After weeks of defensive lapses, the Portuguese coach is prioritizing compactness and balance, with an emphasis on quicker transitions and wingbacks contributing both ways.

“This club must be adaptable,” Amorim stated after the Liverpool match. “We’ve shown spirit, but we must also show control. The injuries change things, yes, but they also open doors for others to step up.”

United’s upcoming fixtures will test both the resilience of their revamped shape and the chemistry of their newly reunited attacking duo. For supporters, the win over Liverpool provided a glimpse of grit and passion—now Amorim must transform that into consistency.
