Patriots release Crossan, sign former Jaguar Grant

The New England Patriots have released running back Dalton Crossan and signed running back Corey Grant.

Crossan, who was signed last week after running back Rex Burkhead was placed on IR, carried the ball three times on Sunday and served as the team's kick returner along with Brandon Bolden. Crossan had a fumble that was recovered by Bolden and did not see the field after that.

On August 10, 2017, Grant ran for 120 yards and a touchdown including a 79-yard touchdown run in the preseason opener against the New England Patriots as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Grant gave the team fits last season as well, catching six passes for 56 yards. He had 59 yards on three catches the season prior during the postseason.

When Crossan's released was announced, many wondered if that would mean that rookie receiver N'Keal Harry would come off IR but that was not the case. Given the crowded room at receiver, New England could potentially decide to 'redshirt' Harry this season and not bring him back until next year.

Kansas City Chiefs at New England Patriots Preview

It wasn't more than fourteen days ago that New England (10-2) appeared and were literally unbeatable. They had an elite defense with DPOY candidate Jamie Collins and arguably the best corner in football with Stephon Gilmore an an offense that featured MVP-candidate Tom Brady, a potential 1000-yard rusher in Sony Michel with Julian Edelman and Josh Gordon outside.

Since then, they've lost both at home and on the road. Outdoor and indoors. And here comes the Kansas City Chiefs, also needing a win.

Kansas City and New England has produced some classic games over the last twelve months with New England coming away both times with the win, including in last year's AFC championship game in overtime. Rob Gronkowski won't be there this time to bail Tom Brady out and for Patrick Mahomes, he'll be without injured receiver Tyreek Hill.

Nevertheless, Sunday figures to be a high-scoring affair between two top-five passing attacks and the top two scoring offenses in the league who also have bottom-ten passing defenses.

Brady, defense dominates in Patriots win over Chiefs
It has long been said that New England Patriots head coach and defacto defensive coordinator Bill Belichick takes away your best weapon.

On Sunday, he decided it was Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Kelce had just four catches heading into the final drive of the game and Patrick Mahomes had been intercepted twice going to him.

Mahomes was limited, Kelce was blanked and the New England Patriots got back to their winning ways on Sunday with a dominating 36-10 victory over the Chiefs.

Tom Brady was his usual self again, throwing for 298 yards, completing 78 percent of his passes along with three touchdowns, two to Phillip Dorsett.

The first gave New England the lead again after Kansas City finally got on the board with 1:51 left in the first half. Mahomes was intercepted on the next drive, which led to a Stephen Gostkowski's 46-yard field goal to make it 15-7 at the half.

Belichick and his defense has held Kansas City to now nine, zero and seven points in the first half of the last three games. This time around, Kansas City couldn't get it going in the second half either.

New England did a better job of protecting Brady, who had been sacked over 50 times this season, a career high. Brady wasn't sacked once and was rarely pressured as they utilized a quick passing game early in the game before picking their spots down the field late.

A win to stop a two-game losing streak. Tom Brady looking like his MVP self, Sony Michel and Julian Edelman surpassing 1,000-yard marks respectively and now, New England Patriot fans get to see their most prized get of the off-season.

Rookie wide receiver N'Keal Harry has been taken off IR, making him eligible to play in this week's game against Cincinnati in what will likely be his debut. Harry had been practicing with the team for the past three weeks before finally coming off the injured list after he suffered an ankle injury in the preseason.

A big bodied receiver, the team selected Harry in the first round of this year's draft and quite frankly, haven't missed him. The lost of Antonio Brown created a temporary hole that has quickly been filled by Phillip Dorsett II who is fourth on the team with 29 catches for 385 yards and five touchdowns.

With that being said, Harry is another tall receiver and is currently one of just three receivers on the roster over six-feet along with Josh Gordon and Cameron Meredith. It remains to be seen how heavily involved Harry will be in the team's offense come Sunday against Cincinnati.

The team cut defensive tackle Byron Cowart to free up the roster space.

'We're onto Cincinnati' has become NFL lore after Bill Belichick's famous words following an embarrassing, primetime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs back in 2014 and with Cincinnati up next. That year, New England will go on to win the Super Bowl after pounding the Bengals 43-17.

This time around, New England (11-2) is coming off a pounding of their own of the Chiefs and now have the ability to clinch the top seed in the AFC with a win and/or Cleveland loss. Cincinnati (7-6), meanwhile, have a chance to catch up to Cleveland with a win to keep the division in play. They can also keep their pace for the wild card spot with Tennessee and Pittsburgh on their heels.

It's been a surprisingly (good?) season for the Bengals under first year head coach Zac Taylor. The offense is improved, ranked 8th in scoring and Andy Dalton has been great, throwing 28 touchdowns to just ten interceptions. Dalton has thrown for over 28 touchdowns in his career just once, coming in 2013 where he also threw 20 interceptions.

He's spread the ball around to a pair of talented receivers in Tyler Boyd and A.J. Green along with tight end Tyler Eifert who is having a bounce back season after injuries slowed him down. Eifert has 44 catches for 473 yards and six touchdowns. Another surprise has been Kelvin Benjamin, with the six-foot-five receiver reeling in 42 passes for 417 yards and two touchdowns, his best numbers since 2017 for the former first round pick.

New England's secondary, after an impressive performance against Kansas City, will have its work cut out for them with Cincinnati's tall receivers. Boyd is six-two and Green is six-four while Stephon Gilmore is the only Patriot corner to be listed at over six-feet tall.

Patriots explode in fourth quarter to avoid near upset at Cincinnati
Football fans were treated to an electric 80-yard catch and run by Corey Grant. Three plays later, the ball bounced off Tyler Boyd's hand and into Giovani Bernard's who took it 75-yard to the house off his teammate's drop. Four plays later, N'Keal Harry was the recipient of a drop-slash-pass breakup intended for Julian Edelman and turned his jets on for a 70-yard score.

It was a wild fourth quarter.

New England scored twenty nine points in the last nine minutes of the game and avoided a near upset at the hands of the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, escaping Paul Brown Stadium with the 48-38 win.

New England fell down 21-10 in the first half after a pick six and two Andy Dalton touchdowns had Cincinnati rolling. After throwing an interception on his first drive, Dalton completed 16 straight passes. The Patriots defense settled down in the third quarter but a late drive before the end of the quarter allowed Cincinnati to take a 31-19 lead heading into the fourth

Tom Brady got going in the fourth, completing a nine-yard pass to Edelman to cut into the lead and on the next drive, he found Grant on a quick, one-play scoring drive. Following Bernard's trick play touchdown, it was Harry's turn to score on a 70-yarder.

Harry, the team's first round pick, was sidelined with an injury all season and had an impressive debut. His first catch was a touchdown and he would go on to catch two more, finishing the game with six catches for 114 yards. The rookie had an early connection with Brady despite Brady's lone interception coming on a misfire to Harry.

Brady threw six touchdowns, completed 70 percent of his passes and amassed 481 yards, not to be outdone by Dalton's 384 yards on 83 percent completion.

Dalton's second interception came on Cincinnati's second to last drive which led to an Edelman touchdown to make it a ten point game.
