The Gamecocks have certainly fallen on hard times. The offense was cruising. I knew once we got up a couple scores, no matter how bad the defense was, they wouldn't catch up.

"Go for 'Zo" - Cheeseman named QB1 ahead of tilt with Vanderbilt

After impressive performances from both redshirt junior Skyler Williams and redshirt freshman Alonzo Cheeseman at the quarterback position in their Week 1 victory against the South Carolina Gamecocks, head coach Nico Augustine has named Cheeseman the starting quarterback.

This comes as limited surprise, despite the impressive 262-yard performance from Williams in the first half where he threw for three touchdowns. Despite this, Cheeseman's heralded control of the offense and efficiency getting the ball out ultimately won the competition for the young quarterback.

"When you see what [Skyler Williams] did for us last season, and what he put on the field last weekend. He didn't lose this competition, I want that to be blatantly clear," said Coach Augustine during the presser where he revealed that Cheeseman would get the nod. "Alonzo [Cheeseman] is an impressive young man who took the job. There wasn't much more that Skyler could show us. We love him, we think the world of him. But, this is the choice that we believe is best for our team."

Offensive coordinator Tony Sanchez gives mountains of credit to Williams for a job well fought and exclaims that his role will be of the utmost importance to the SMU Mustangs going forward. "We hope he remains engaged because he's still very much a part of this team. We need his leadership and we need him to stay ready just like he was last year."

Williams took it on the chin, though it was hard for him not to voice his disappointment. "I'm uncertain what more I could do, but I understand that this is what happens in football sometimes. I'm going to support Alonzo and be ready when my number is called."

Cheeseman took the challenge head on, excited to get the nod of approval from both Coach Augustine and Coach Sanchez. "These guys have had their hands in some really successful quarterback seasons. I'm hopeful I can be the next one and continue to grow. I want to win."

Also announced on the defensive side, captain and star MIKE linebacker Kevin Lockridge will miss the next "couple of weeks" due to a broken thumb he suffered in last weekend's game. The heart and soul of the defense, Lockridge will be sorely missed and leaves a large hole in the roster. SAM linebacker Cam Roberson, who was splitting time with Ben Stutz, will move over and take the spot, with Mike Coker coming in sometimes in relief.

The Mustangs will be travelling to face off against their next SEC appointment, taking on the 0-1 Vanderbilt Commodores.
