Miami, FL. - In a national semifinal that lived up to every bit of the hype, it wasn’t the reigning Heisman winner who stole the show; it was the quarterbacks. Fredrick Meredith and Notre Dame’s Zac Pappoe traded blows all night at Hard Rock Stadium as Coastal Carolina outlasted the Fighting Irish 45–42 to punch their ticket to a second straight National Championship Game.

Both signal-callers came out firing. Pappoe was nearly flawless early, going 10 of 12 for 266 yards and three touchdowns in the first half. Meredith matched him throw for throw, completing 21 of 26 passes for 248 yards and three scores of his own. The only difference between the two offensive juggernauts was a costly Notre Dame fumble that led to a 39-yard Gene Marable field goal.

It looked like the Irish would head to the break ahead after Pappoe’s third touchdown strike made it 21–17, but Meredith orchestrated a flawless two minute drill, finding Morgan Briggs up the seam for a touchdown in the final seconds to send Coastal into halftime with a 24–21 lead.

The pace slowed in the second half as both defenses found their footing, but Notre Dame struck first after converting a Fredrick Meredith interception into a short Tye Vaughn touchdown run to reclaim the lead.

Enter Cornell Jennings. Known mostly for his Heisman winning production on the ground, the junior tailback reminded everyone he can catch too, torching All-American linebacker Larry Webb on a 60 yard wheel route touchdown that flipped the momentum back to Coastal.

From there, the Chanticleers seized control. Safety Keke Allotey made a stunning over the shoulder interception to set up a 53 yard strike to Bernie Bender, and Meredith capped the surge with his sixth touchdown pass of the night to push the lead to 45–28.

But Pappoe refused to go quietly. The Irish quarterback engineered two lightning-quick touchdown drives, including a 90-yard catch-and-run by Dom Tamm on a bubble screen to pull within three late. Notre Dame’s onside kick attempt failed, however, and Coastal drained the clock to secure the win.

“This is the kind of game you want on this stage,” said head coach Kade Vaughn. “Winner goes home, and those guys across the field played their hearts out. That’s the best challenge we’ve had all season.” When pressed about whether this was the kind of game Coastal expected from ACC rival Miami, Vaughn simply smirked: “Ah, ah, ah. Not getting me this time.”

With the win, Coastal advances to its second straight National Championship and third in six years, extending its program-record winning streak to 31 games; tied for the fifth-longest in college football history.

Up next: a date with the Ole Miss Rebels, who stunned Ohio State in a triple overtime thriller (50-48) after erasing an 11-point deficit in the final minutes.

Image
Fredrick Meredith continues to be the X factor for Coastal's playoff run.

Image
Zac Pappoe consistently found room in the Chanticleers coverage on his way to a 523 yard outing, a new Orange Bowl record.

Image
Allotey snagged the momentum flipping interception in the 3rd quarter that allowed Coastal to take just enough of a lead to weather the late Irish surge.

Holy crap way closer than I imagined. But got the job done. Crazy you matched up with Miami for a fricken third time, what is this the NFL? Good luck against the Rebels. Ratings wise looks like you will blow them out of the water.

Pappoe is a 99 overall and he did his thang :obama: I thought for sure they'd recover the onside.

Rebels have a good starting roster just not a lot of depth

Houston, TX. - For the second straight game, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers built a massive lead—then spent the fourth quarter clinging to it. But cling they did, and when the clock finally struck zero, they stood tall once again: back-to-back National Champions, the first to do so since Georgia in 2021 and 2022.

“I thought the first one was amazing, the second even sweeter,” said head coach Kade Vaughn, grinning from the championship podium. “But after everything we went through this year? This is the cherry on top.”

Vaughn handed the offensive MVP trophy to Fredrick McCallum, the former Ohio State transfer who delivered the knockout blow. After Fredrick Meredith opened the game with an ugly interception that set up an Ole Miss field goal, McCallum responded immediately—ripping off a 75-yard touchdown that ignited a 37–3 Chanticleer blitz.

From there, Coastal’s defense and big-play offense took turns crushing the Rebels’ spirit. Ramon Queiro forced a fumble at the goal line that flipped momentum, Cornell Jennings punched in a short score, and Meredith found Bernie Bender for a 44-yard dagger just before halftime. When Coastal opened the third quarter with another scoring drive, it looked like time to cue the celebration.

But Ole Miss quarterback Marco DeMar had other plans, torching the Coastal secondary for 434 yards as the Rebels outscored the Chants 35–13 down the stretch. Still, two recovered onside kicks and a pair of short touchdown drives sealed it—Coastal Carolina 50, Ole Miss 38—and ensured the teal and bronze would reign supreme for one more year.

“We said at the start of the season, you’d better come correct if you want this crown,” shouted Meredith into the mic postgame. “Some came close, but in the end… WE THE BEST.”

Yet even as confetti rained, the story wasn’t just about the repeat. It was about survival—of the season, of the locker room, and of the uneasy alliance between Vaughn and Athletic Director Mike Buddie.

For months, the two had been locked in a quiet cold war—rumors of power struggles, sideline snubs, and off-field friction swirling even as Coastal kept winning. But on the championship podium, the tension thawed—if only for a moment. Buddie, eyes fixed on the cameras, introduced Vaughn as “the greatest coach in Coastal Carolina history” before handing him the National Championship trophy.

The handshake that followed was brief, polite, and entirely calculated.

“Winning cures a lot, but not everything,” warned Nick Saban on ESPN’s postgame broadcast. “When two strong-willed people go to war like that, one trophy doesn’t erase the scars. But if the goal is winning titles? Coastal probably isn’t finding anyone better than the man they already have.”
