SMU star running back Jeremy Payne out with abdominal injury ahead of bowl game
By Veronica Downs | SMU Daily
The SMU Mustangs have announced that star running back Jeremy Payne will miss the team's bowl game that has yet to be announced with an abdominal injury that he sustained during their narrow 31-29 victory over Duke this past weekend.
Payne has been one of the top running backs in the nation, but has been slowed by a nagging injury the last few weeks while pacing the country in rushing yards. With his season now shut down, Payne will finish his final season of collegiate football with 1,327 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns on 193 carries, averaging 6.9 yards per carry. This is far and away his breakout season after his past two seasons at TCU giving him 517 yards and 725 yards respectively. Payne also sharpened his receiving game, catching 34 passes out of the backfield for 378 receiving yards and two more scores.
"He's been gritting through a number of injuries the last few weeks, and we felt as though its best for him to take a seat and serve our team in a role that's best for his long-term health," commented head coach Nico Augustine. "He's given everything he had to give, and its our time to give back to him."
The team is waiting to see if their outside chance of making it into the College Football Playoffs is met through some giant movement in the conference championship games. The ACC Championship Game will be played between #1 Clemson and #3 Pittsburgh.
