Red Wolves QB Jaylen Raynor named finalist for Heisman Trophy
By Olivia Scott | Jonesboro Newsletter

As Arkansas State prepares for their second consecutive Sun Belt championship, this time taking on James Madison to defend their crown - they can take pride knowing they will be led by a Heisman candidate at the quarterback position.

After an overall dominant season, Arkansas State quarterback Jaylen Raynor was announced as one of the five finalists for the Heisman Trophy, joining South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers, Georgia wide receiver Landon Roldan, LSU running back Caden Durham, and Tennessee quarterback Kenny Minchey.

Raynor has led Arkansas State to a dominant 11-1 record through the regular season, throwing to the tune of 3,576 passing yards for 41 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions - a far cry from his 12 interceptions through last season. He has increased his completion percentage from 68% last year up to 71% while relying more on his run game to get him places. He rushed for 658 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 5.8 yards per carry.

His only down performance was during Arkansas State's lone loss - an early disappointing showing against TCU. But, he returned and has performed exceptionally ever since, including impressive performances against in-state rival Arkansas and top Sun Belt competition in Southern Mississippi.

Arkansas State offers extension to OC Augustine with Ohio State rumors circling
By Olivia Scott | Jonesboro Newsletter

Arkansas State offensive coordinator Nico Augustine has led the Red Wolves to one of the most productive offenses in the country for the second consecutive season while having his quarterback, Jaylen Raynor, becoming a Heisman Trophy finalist and an NFL draft hopeful.

His stock has risen faster than anyone and his contract is set to expire at the end of this season. With that in mind and having just hired former defensive coordinator Griff McCarley to replace Butch Jones as the team's head coach, the best the Red Wolves can do is fill Augustine's pockets as best as they can.

With the Sun Belt championship defense on the horizon, triggering a hopeful acceptance into the College Football Playoff, the school has offered Augustine a five-year contract extension that will keep the promising coordinator in Jonesboro until 2031. Though the details of the contract have not been revealed to the public, it is rumored to have required a great amount of budget adjustments from the university to wow the former Canadian university head coach.

This all comes on the heels of Ohio State reportedly firing head coach Ryan Day and posturing to hire the mostly unproven Augustine. The university has fallen on hard times and is about to lose All-American wide receiver Jeremiah Smith to the NFL draft, along with numerous other talented players. A resurgence with a name looking to prove itself, similar to Augustine's situation, may be exactly what the Buckeyes are looking to do.

Other schools that can be knocking on the door for his services include Stanford, Iowa, and Washington, just to name a few.
