The Time Is Now

Boston, MA. - The wait is over: Roman Anthony has been promoted to the big-league roster and is expected to make his debut in the upcoming home series against the visiting Los Angeles Angels.

Where he plays will be fluid, according to Kyle Red, the special assistant to club president Sam Kennedy and direct supervisor of chief baseball officer Craig Breslow.

“We don’t need Roman in the lineup today, which makes this move all the better,” Red said alongside Breslow. “It lets him focus on adjusting to big-league pitching and getting his feet under him.”

Breslow echoed the measured approach:

“He isn’t coming up with the expectation to save the season, and that’s huge for us.”

Boston announced a corresponding positional shift: Ceddanne Rafaela will slide to the infield, taking over at shortstop on a temporary basis to relieve the outfield logjam. Anthony joins an outfield that already features a locked-in Jarren Duran and a steady Wilyer Abreu.

Red clarified the plan:

“Ceddanne will play short every day for now, with Roman entering the outfield mix. Duran is raking and sets the tone at the top; Abreu is one of the most consistent hitters and defenders we have. It wouldn’t make sense to move either. The most logical solution is the middle infield, where production has been up and down.”

While the club avoided naming names, the picture is clear: Trevor Story has struggled, hitting .206 with 3 home runs and 17 RBIs, and he hasn’t logged an extra-base hit or RBI since mid-May. Early chatter is that Boston has placed Story on the block; the Giants and Cubs are among teams showing interest, but the money still owed is a sticking point in any talks.

Not everyone is thrilled with moving an elite center-field glove to the dirt. Fans quickly took to X to voice their displeasure of Rafaela moving out of center:

"Moving the best CF out of his position? Make it make sense.”

“Anthony/Rafaela/Abreu is the future of the outfield. Love Duran, but sell while his value is high and get more PITCHING!!! #duh”

Boston’s rotation currently paces the league in team ERA, but depth always plays in October. Whether the Red Sox leverage their outfield surplus to add innings or simply let Anthony force the issue with his bat, the clock is ticking. Rafaela may hold his own at shortstop in the short term, but his elite glove belongs in center. With the trade deadline less than two months away, the pressure is on Red and Breslow to convert a good problem into a permanent solution.
