Uncertainty in new regime leads to mass exodus as portal opens, Raynor remains as silver lining
By Olivia Scott | Jonesboro

In the aftermath of former head coach Butch Jones leaving the Arkansas Red Wolves for the National Football League and the Wolves ushering in one of the youngest head coaches in the nation in former defensive coordinator Griffin McCarley, the Red Wolves has seen the mass exodus that is invoked by the transfer portal. A-State hopeful expected the fact that the team finished with a 12-2 record and a Sun Belt championship.

A-State hopeful? Brace for impact.

The quarterback room is barren with the transfers of quarterbacks 2 through 4 while starter and the nation's passing leader Jaylen Raynor remaining for his final season of eligibility. "People running from the struggle? Couldn't be me. We gonna run this [expletive] back. We don't need them frauds anyways." The team will need to refill their running back room as well, with Ja'Quez Cross graduating and Kenyon Clay opting to enter into the portal after seeing his role reduced towards the end of the season.

Wide receiver Hunter Summers was reportedly mulling entering himself but a conversation between him, Raynor, and offensive coordinator Nico Augustine reportedly rebuilt his confidence in remaining with the team as the de facto number one offensive threat now that All-American wide receiver Corey Rucker and Nana Burris have both graduated.

Defensively, the team will need a hard reset as well, with middle linebacker Javante Mackey, defensive tackles Quincy Wright and Chris Boti, and safety Trevon Howard all leaving for the portal while cornerback Avante Dickerson and edge rushers Bryan Whitehead and Marcus Bradley have all graduated.

The new coaching staff will have their work cut out for them to reload the cupboard in the transfer portal.

A-State alumni Corey Rucker taken in seventh round by LA Rams
By Olivia Scott | Jonesboro

While Arkansas State goes through the transfer portal after seeing a slew of players opt out for greener pastures, they will be able to see that former All-American wide receiver and Biletnikoff Award winner Corey Rucker has been drafted in the 2026 NFL Draft in the seventh round by the Los Angeles Rams.

Rucker, standing at 6-feet even and weighing in at 214 pounds, performed well at A-State's Pro Day, catching passes from quarterback Jaylen Raynor. His 40-yard-dash time was recorded at a 4.51 and he repped out 13 reps on the bench press. Rucker is hoping to make the Rams' out of training camp, where he'll get the opportunity to learn under veteran receivers like former All-Pro Davante Adams and former Offensive Rookie of the Year, Puka Nacua.

Rucker recorded 100 catches for 1,483 receiving yards and a Sun Belt conference record 22 touchdowns last season, leading the Red Wolves to a Sun Belt championship and a Bowl game victory.

Red Wolves add three-star safety Duke Golden, load up transfer portal targets
By Olivia Scott | Jonesboro Newsletter

Despite the series of previous events that has occurred with head coach Butch Jones leaving for the NFL, Corey Rucker being drafted by the LA Rams, and the exodus of players who have left the program via the transfer portal, three-star safety Duke Golden out of Montgomery, Alabama has decided that Arkansas State is the place for him.

"I trust the program, I trust the fellas that hung around and trusted the process, I want to be a part of the pack for sure." commented Golden, a 6-foot-1, 186-pound safety that was one of the most coveted targets of the Red Wolves at the beginning of the season. Golden was deciding between UAB and A-State for the majority of the season and decided to commit.

Golden's top-end speed and ability to sniff out the play will have him in competition to start right away, especially with one of their leading tacklers, strong safety Trevon Howard, now in the portal, leaving the top job available.

As for the incoming class of transfers, the team is reportedly in talks with the likes of quarterback Tavien St. Clair, runningback Kyson Brown, and wide receiver Jordan Faison - all Power 5 targets looking to turn their collegiate careers around.
