Defensive coordinator Griffin McCarley tapped for promotion to head coach, OC Augustine retained with new reigns
By Olivia Scott | Jonesboro

The Arkansas Red Wolves football team has announced that defensive coordinator Griffin McCarley has been promoted to become the next head coach of the team with offensive coordinator Nico Augustine being promoted the role of co-head coach with an increased responsibility of leading recruitment going forward. This comes after head coach Butch Jones announced he would be moving to the National Football League to become the offensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings.

McCarley is one of the younger coaches in the FBS, let alone on the Red Wolves staff. He was the youngest defensive coordinator in the nation this past season, spending his first season in the booth leading the second-best defensive unit in the Sun Belt conference. He was formerly a linebackers analyst with Ole Miss prior to making his way to Jonesboro.

Coach Augustine, one of the hotter prospects on the coaching market, repeatedly held interest from the likes of UMass, Akron, and interestingly enough, Georgia Southern, before doubling down and returning to Arkansas State. His two-year contract he originally signed is expiring at the end of next season.

A-State just rattled off 12 wins in their most successful season in recent history, including a Sun Belt championship and a Bowl victory on the backs of the most productive offense in the nation in Augustine's inaugural season. The team is hoping to retain star quarterback Jaylen Raynor and running back Kenyon Clay from enter the transfer portal this off-season.

that was a lot closer than I thought it would be. Also like the decision to keep Nico an OC for a bit longer.

Bama sent his ass packing after such a shitty season.

Appreciate it man. With the storyline that's already set and going to be coming, it really didn't make sense for a first-year OC to automatically become head coach. Butch Jones leaving kind of screwed the storyline a bit, but we move.
