The Reclamation Initiative | The Coaching Career of Nico Augustine

By Olivia Scott | Jonesboro Newsletter
If you would have told Arkansas State head coach Butch Jones that by Week 7, the Red Wolves would have three 3-star recruits, he would probably ask you to wake him up from the dream he's clearly dreaming. Yet, here we are.
Three-star offensive tackle David Coco out of Kansas City, Missouri and three-star edge rusher Jesse Fonseca of Trophy Club, Texas have both announced their verbal commitments to Arkansas State. Both recruits were in the building during Arkansas State's 48-17 victory over Texas State, with Coco reportedly shaking coach Jones' hand after the victory and committing on the spot.
"I knew this was home," Coco commented during an Instagram live after announcing his commitment to Arkansas State. "Just seeing the love the crowd had for their team. I want to be a part of what they are building here." Bowling Green and Northern Illinois were notably in the running for Coco's services, along with a late push from Louisiana Tech and Hawai'i. Coco is incredibly speedy for 6-foot-5 with 277 pounds makes him exceptional in creating lanes for the run game.
As for Fonseca, he is a smidge undersized at 6 feet tall and 212 pounds, but his ability to motor around the edge is what gets him to Jonesboro. He has exceptional strength and analysts believe once he works on his technique and grows a bit more, he'll be a threat. Fonseca out of Trophy Club, Texas, picks the Red Wolves over Texas State, Eastern Michigan, and New Mexico.
The team remains in on remaining three-star target safety Duke Golden out Montgomery, Alabama. They are fighting off the likes of UAB, South Alabama, and Auburn.

Trouble in Paradise - Jaylen Raynor Transfer Watch
By Olivia Scott | Jonesboro Newsletter
Is it feasible that the all-time leader in passing for the Arkansas State Red Wolves, quarterback Jaylen Raynor, to opt for greener pastures? Sun Belt Conference analysts certainly think so.
Raynor has enjoyed a mostly up (but some down) campaign seven weeks into the 2025 season as the Red Wolves enjoy their bye week. Two tough contests after an FCS slugfest had them dropping to an early 1-2 record, with them narrowly falling into in-state rival Arkansas and ranked Iowa State that was possibly the ugliest showing of Raynor’s career with four interceptions.
He has been exceptional ever since as the Red Wolves have rattled off three straight victories, including an impressive five-touchdown game against Texas State that has campus buzzing. He was recently named the Sun Belt offensive player of the week, and certainly had a case for National player of the week as well.
Has this done enough to garner some Power 5 conference attention when it comes to the transfer portal? Red Wolves fan podcast host Scott Arnault certainly believes so.
“He’s easily the best quarterback in the Sun Belt, and if he wants to prove himself on a bigger stage, now’s his chance.”
Raynor committed and has led Arkansas State to an 8-5 record, throwing for 2,783 passing yards and 16 touchdowns with 10 interceptions while adding 3 more scores on the ground.
Raynor originally was an unranked quarterback recruit and committed to play college football at Arkansas State over offers from Army, Air Force, Navy, UMass, and Miami-OH.
“He’s such a difference maker with what he’s been able to do on the ground to extend plays. Everyone thought he was going to come in with [offensive coordinator Nico Augustine] and show up as a Corey Rucker merchant, but he’s been able to evenly distribute the ball to other targets. I can’t imagine [head coach] Butch Jones and co. being able to retain him.”
Arkansas State could look a lot different next year, with Rucker graduating and (presumably) heading to the NFL while Raynor and star running back Kenyon Clay could be the two bigger transfer portal declarees.
Only time will tell if the staff can convince their two offensive stars to run it back in Jonesboro for their senior seasons.
