UNLV Stuns Boise State on Smurf Turf Behind Last-Second Field Goal

Boise, ID --
In a showdown between two of the Mountain West’s hottest teams, it was the UNLV Rebels who emerged victorious, stunning Boise State 25-24 on their famed blue turf with a game-winning field goal in the final seconds. The Rebels, riding high with now five straight wins, became bowl eligible with their sixth victory of the season—and did it in dramatic fashion.

The hero of the night? Running back Jai’Den Thomas, who bulldozed his way through the Broncos defense for 166 rushing yards and two touchdowns, leading a ground game that proved too powerful for Boise State to contain.

Thomas had the ability to shine due to the absence of quarterback Alex Orji, who left the game on the team’s first drive with an elbow injury.

Boise State responded with big plays of their own, including a second-half surge behind quarterback Maddux Madsen, who connected with his tight ends and receivers to keep the Broncos in it.

They clawed their way back from a two-score deficit to tie the game in the final minutes, then punched in a late touchdown, both runs by running back Jambres Dubar.

But UNLV didn’t flinch.

With the game on the line on a 3rd-and-10 from their own 49-yard line, Alex Orji came back into the game. He was flushed out of the pocket and somehow managed to complete a 19-yard pass as he was hit to Jaden Bradley, who secured the catch and set up the Rebels in field goal range with a minute left.

The Rebels' defense also played a pivotal role, coming up with timely sacks—three on the night—and a clutch fumble recovery deep in their own territory that prevented a potential Boise touchdown.

“We talked about being physical, staying composed, and finishing,” said UNLV head coach Dan Mullen postgame. “Jai’Den ran like a man possessed, and our guys up front won the battle.”

After killing some clock UNLV kicker Caden Costa came out and drilled the game-winning kick.

UNLV now sits in prime position in the Mountain West standings and will look to build off this momentum as bowl season approaches. For Boise State, the loss is a bitter setback on their home turf, but the playoff race remains wide open.

For now, it’s the Rebels who are celebrating—bowl eligible, red-hot, and battle-tested after surviving the blue turf thriller in Boise.

Smurf turf is a tough place to go in and win. Great job taking care of that.

Also love seeing Oklahoma ahead of Texas in the rankings.

HAWAII STORMS FORT COLLINS WITH DEFENSIVE DISPLAY

FORT COLLINS, CO --
The thin air at 5,003 feet wasn’t the only thing suffocating Colorado State on Saturday. The Hawai‘i Rainbow Warriors defense rolled into Fort Collins and delivered a Mile-High mauling, forcing three turnovers, recording eight sacks, and capping it off with a fumble return touchdown in a commanding 44-7 win over the Rams.

With the victory, Hawai‘i extended its win streak to five games, improving its position in the Mountain West standings while making a definitive statement: this defense is for real.

“We talk about being aggressive, being relentless,” said head coach Timmy Chang after the game. “Today, that’s exactly what our defense brought. Start to finish, they played like they had something to prove—and they did.”

They proved it on nearly every Colorado State drive. The Rainbow Warriors defense pinned its ears back and made life miserable for Rams quarterback Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi, sacking him and his back up eight times and never letting the Rams offense settle into any rhythm.

Defensive lineman and former Minnesota transfer Luther McCoy led the charge with 2.0 sacks and a fumble recovery, while linebacker Jamih Otis added a sack of his own, a forced fumble, and also recorded an interception that flipped field position and ultimately led to a Hawai‘i touchdown.

That early momentum set the stage for a night of defensive fireworks, including the back-breaking moment on the final play of the third quarter: a blindside strip sack deep in Colorado State territory by Otis, where defensive tackle Qwyn Williams scooped it up and raced 14 yards into the end zone. The touchdown made it 37-0 and put an exclamation point on the win.

Offensively they were led by wide receiver Nick Cenacle, who came down with a jump ball for a 42-yard touchdown, then beat the press and sprinted for an 81-yard score. He finished the day with 7 catches, 180 yards and 2 touchdowns.

By the final whistle Colorado State had just 163 yards of offense (164 passing, -1 rushing), were 2-of-13 (15%) on third down conversions and averaged an abysmal two yards per play. As the team knelt the clock out, it was clear: the Rainbow Warriors are peaking at the right time.

“This is the kind of win that builds belief,” Chang said. “Not just in the locker room, but back home, across the island, everyone who’s riding with us. We’re not done.”

With four Mountain West games remaining on the schedule, including a potential #1/#2 matchup @ UNLV looming, Hawai‘i controls its own destiny in the race for the conference title—and if Saturday was any indication, the defense might just carry them the rest of the way.

In Colandrea, we trust. Good to see Hawai'i coming along with a dominant performance as well.
