Hawaii Seizes Golden Screwdriver in Win Over Fresno State

HONOLULU, HI --
In a rivalry built on animosity, history, and the quirkiest trophy in college football—the Golden Screwdriver—Saturday night’s showdown between Hawaii and Fresno State lived up to every bit of the hype. The Rainbow Warriors stormed back in the second half to claim a statement 34-17 victory over their Mountain West nemesis.

The “Battle for the Golden Screwdriver” dates back to a heated postgame altercation between fans in 2002, and while the trophy may be tongue-in-cheek, the hatred is very real. That edge was evident from the opening kickoff, as both squads traded highlight-reel plays and hard hits in front of a raucous Honolulu crowd.

Fresno State came out swinging, striking first with a deep ball from quarterback E.J. Warner to Josiah Freeman on a 44-yard streak in one-on-one coverage. Freeman lit up the stat sheet, hauling in chunk gains at every level of the field and looking nearly unguardable finishing with 213 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The Bulldogs’ explosive offense built momentum early, with Warner carving up Hawaii’s secondary for two first-half touchdown passes and a 17–7 lead.

But the Rainbow Warriors weren’t rattled. Hawaii responded with resilience and Quarterback Micah Alejado led a critical touchdown drive late in the second quarter, finding receiver Karsyn Pupuna for a key third-down conversion before Cam Barfield punched it in with a ground score.

That late-half touchdown proved to be a turning point. Hawaii came out of the locker room with renewed energy, stifling Fresno State’s offense and finally generating pressure. The Bulldogs were shutout in the second half and the Warriors recorded six sacks in the win.

Midway through the fourth quarter, with Hawaii nursing a narrow 7-point lead, the game swung decisively. A Fresno State fumble turned into a scoop-and-score by Jackie Johnson III, sent the stadium into a frenzy. That play gave the Rainbow Warriors a two-possession cushion and seemed to suck the wind out of the Bulldogs’ sails.

From there, Hawaii's defense clamped down. A fourth-down stop deep in their own territory and a late interception sealed the deal. The Warriors added a field goal for good measure and ran out the clock with a celebratory air.

With the win, Hawaii improves to 4–1 and has now won consecutive games against the Bulldogs. Fresno State still leads the series all-time 30-26.

“This isn’t just a win. This is for everyone who’s worn this uniform and battled Fresno,” said Hawaii head coach Timmy Chang after the game. “The Golden Screwdriver stays in the islands, and that means everything to the 808.”

Meanwhile, Fresno State leaves Oahu with questions to answer and a bitter taste in their mouth—a feeling all too familiar in this bitter feud.

As college football shifts and conferences realign, some things remain sacred. Rivalries like this one endure. And in this year's chapter of the Battle for the Golden Screwdriver, Hawaii struck gold.

Tough close win - not everyone can be a blow out. I love when a gritty game turns on its head in the 4th quarter :blessed:

When Freeman came down with that first touchdown (pictured above) I couldn't believe it. But he kept making play after play, our defense stood no chance. Almost made me break the no switch house rule but I withstood. We're bringing back the Pac-12 After Dark!
