In the end though, he more or less made sure that "even if he fucked you, you felt alright about it," as quoted by one of the people interviewed for the article.

A little inside baseball, I wrote a good chunk of the outline of what I've released so far in one long writing session and then went back and tidied it up over time. At first, I wanted to scrap or modify that storyline since it sounded unbelievable once I read it again BUT I then realized it was the perfect symbolism of how untouchable Little Book felt.

Big Book not even smart with how he yeets them fetuses. Should've just bought the pills and had them shipped to Texas. Or so I heard this was the easiest way to handle this.

Top247 CB Booker Gurley III keeping his options open despite commitment to Longhorns
The Texas legacy had a busy summer with official visits throughout the month of June.

PRAIRIE VIEW, Tx. -- One of the top cornerbacks in the country had a busy summer, squeezing in five official visits last month prior to the beginning of the dead period.

247Sports spoke with five-star cornerback Booker Gurley III of Waller High School (Texas) on Sunday as he reflects on his visits this past summer.

"It was a good experience for me and my family," Gurley said, "I had visited some of these places before but it was good to get out there with my family and sort of get everyone's thoughts and how they feel about the different schools and coaches and things like that."

Gurley, whose father played at the University of Texas and won a national championship, is currently committed to Texas but did not visit the Longhorns this past summer. Booker took visits to SMU, Georgia, Alabama, Texas A&M and Miami. Booker's explanation for why is a simple one.

"I've been to [Austin] a bunch of times," Gurley said, "I sort of know where I stand with Texas and how I feel about them. This summer was really about finding out about other schools and making sure that I made the right decision. I'll probably be [in Austin] for a couple of games this fall so they'll definitely get another look before I decide for real."

Gurley said he initially planned on shutting down his recruitment later this month but has delayed his decision due to a family matter. He says he still plans on signing to a school during the Early Signing Period in December and that if Signing Day were today, he'd be signing with Texas. He listed Georgia and Alabama as the next schools in contention, followed by Miami and Texas A&M.

"I like the vibe in Miami and the coaching staff," Gurley added, "I feel like Texas A&M is a good middle ground between what I'm used to and something different. There really isn't a bad choice which is what makes this tough but by Thanksgiving, I should know where I'm going. I think the decision will come naturally."

Gurley is ranked No. 23 overall by 247Sports. He's the No. 3 cornerback in the class and carries a 247Sports rating of 91. Here's why he took home Alpha Dog honors earlier this year via 247Sports national analyst Hudson Standish:

"Modern defenses at every level of football are searching for elite athletes with ideal length for the position. Gurley checks those boxes, verified at the 2025 Navy All-American Bowl hovering around 6-foot-2 1/2, 180 pounds with arm length and a wingspan that would be ideal for an edge rusher. Gurley spent Sunday's camp fluidly moving in coverage and shutting down nearly every receiver he matched up with in the extensive one-on-one session. The No. 23 player in the 2026 Top247 rankings was the only player we saw come away with multiple interceptions. And even when he wasn't picking off passes, the five-star talent was finding success mirroring potential pass catchers in both press- and off-man coverage. Gurley's ability to break on the ball and recover quickly in space is uncommon at his size and makes him one of the more coveted defensive backs in the 2026 cycle."

Chapter Four :: Truth in the Devil, Part One

As a seventeen-year old high school senior with not many interests outside of football, I didn't know how much my life would change following the release of that article, just that it would. Making eye contact with my mother was difficult for those first few days. I felt embarrassed for her, knowing that she probably couldn't walk out of the house without feeling like every eye was trained on her for the wrong reasons.

My father, who had already gotten into the habit of working long hours and frequently missing dinners, was barely home in those first few days. When he was home, it was like nothing ever happened. No family meeting, no pulling me to the side to discuss what happened. He'd wish me and my siblings a good day at school, kiss my mom on her forehead at the breakfast table and leave through the door at the crack of dawn, donning his customary open-collar shirt with a colorful suit. He'd return home, late at night, place a half-eaten box of takeout on the kitchen counter and retire to his bedroom with my mother.

One of those nights, as I was playing video games in the living room, I had my first argument with my father. He'd walk in, placed the container on the kitchen counter and instead of immediately retiring to his room, he hung around, striking up casual conversation about the Astros or some other topic that I had no interest in. The more he talked, the angrier I got until it finally boiled over.

"How are you just acting like nothing has happened? Like everything is good?" I pressed him, mindful of my volume in an effort to not wake up my mom or my siblings.

"People are looking at us differently because of you," I told him.

He didn't say much; he didn't scream, he didn't get angry. He just nodded, neither denying nor confirming the claims, and told me that one day, I would understand. He finished his drink and retired to his bedroom.

The whispers in the school hallways had begun to get louder as the days and weeks passed. While I doubt any of my classmates took the time to read the article, a few tidbits from it had been spread around social media, enough for those kids to get a general understanding of the more gossipy parts of the article. Some of the boys would praise my dad, saying his 'pimp hand was strong' for his rumored cohorts of young college graduates that he kept on staff as election volunteers. It was rumored that he had sexual relations with many of them, sometimes at the same time, sometimes in the mayor's office.

I kept my mouth shut and tried my best to ignore those murmurs during the early weeks because I had nothing to say back and I hadn't read the article, just the excerpts that had been posted on social media, coming across my timeline. When I searched my name, which had become a frequent, self-indulgent habit to pick up on the latest recruiting chatter about me, it would be filled with news of my father instead as major publications had begun circulating and reacting to the article, upholding it as evidence that journalism wasn't dead.

Despite all of this, I still resisted the urge to read the article. It wasn't until opposing players began screaming "Where's Martha at?" to me in between plays or taunting my father's rumored drug usage—specifically cocaine—that I finally gave in and spent the better part of a school day reading the article.

I didn't go home that night, spending it at Keiyana's. Her parents had always taken a liking to me, seeing me as a calming influence on her. They had no problem with me staying in their guest room that night—or even the night after. On the third night, Uncle Sam, who was Keiyana’s actual uncle, showed up. He told me that I needed to go home and deal with "whatever that comes with."

It would be too cliché and untrue to say that the car ride with Uncle Sam turned me into a man, but it certainly provided me insight into what being a man looked like. Until that car ride, my definition of being a man was always replicating, to the best of my abilities, what I had seen in my father and grandfather. The article shattered that worldview, and it was Uncle Sam who helped pick up those pieces. He told me in no uncertain terms that things were going to get worse before they got better—with no guarantee they ever would. He didn’t mince words, saying there was a very good chance that my father, his best friend, did the very things he was accused of in that article—but that ultimately, it didn’t matter. He was still my father, and I was still a Gurley, tasked with carrying that last name through both the good times and now the bad.

He told me I had responsibilities, as a son, to be there for my mother and my father. I had a responsibility, as a brother, to be there for my younger siblings and shield them, as best I could, from the world.
