Owl Vision 2: The Return of Coach PJ Thomas

Rice starts the season with only 5 players named to the Athlon Sports Preseason All-AAC Team. Led by middle linebacker, DJ Arkansas and right tackle Ethan Onianwa who were both named to the first team.
Defensive tackle Blake Boenicsh, linebacker Andrew Awe, and corner back Lamont Narcisse were named to the second team defense. Last season’s 13 players are the most for Rice since the magazine began naming preseason all-conference teams in 2011, surpassing the 12 Owls selected before the 2014 season.
NFL Draft pick Dean Connors, is a notable departure for the Owls after he led the NCAA in rushing, earning himself the Heisman. Connors finished the season just three years shy of 2500 yards on the ground and 24 rushing touchdowns. The Owls expect Connors’ backup Daelan Alexander to step into the starting role right away. Alexander finished last season with just under 750 rushing yards and scored 8 touchdowns. He may be able to join the 1,000 yard rushing club this season as we expect his number of carries to increase significantly.
The Owls will be having a change at QB yet again this season, as former Temple quarterback E.J. Warner has decided to enter the transfer portal once again and play for Utah State. Perhaps the most notable change for Rice this coming season will be at quarterback. Warner did not fit as well as expected in head coach Mike Bloomgren’s system as the Owls leaned heavily on the run game. Warner finished with 2,693 passing yards, throwing for 24 touchdowns, but also threw 11 interceptions. He had a 62% completion rating on his 339 pass attempts. Stepping under center will be redshirt junior, A.J. Padgett. Padgett saw very limited time on the field last season, completing 6 of 9 passes and throwing one touchdown and one interception.
On the defensive side of the ball, Rice will be looking to All-AAC players, D.J. Arkansas and Lamont Narcisse to make some noise. Arkansas finished with over 40 solo tackles with 16 tackles for a loss and 2 interceptions. Narcisse also had over 40 solo tackles, getting into the backfield 8 times and snagged 4 interceptions.
While the Owls weren’t able to take advantage of the transfer portal this time around, they did manage to bring in the third best recruiting class in the American Conference, signing 26 players. Six of those being 3-star recruits, led by tight end Alex Tuttle. Given how Boden Groen led the Owls receiving corps last season, we expect to see Tuttle begin to fill a bit of that role in his first season. Junior receivers Landon Ransom-Goelz and Rawson Macneil will be there to help show him the ropes.
