Mariners Continue to Retool as June Arrives
Ryan Divish -- Seattle Times Beat Report

The Seattle Mariners had an inconsistent May. There were highlights like taking three out of four games from the division leading Astros in Houston but also lowlights like losing the series to the below average Athletics on the road. The Mariners went 13-14 in the month of May and currently see them sitting at 30-30. They still are in the hunt for the playoffs but if they don’t start making improvements soon that window will quickly close. Let’s take a look at some of the top headlines for the Mariners

Is Randy Arozarena on His Way Out?
A couple of years removed from some great seasons in Tampa Bay and we are seeing a hard regression for Randy Arozarena. In 54 games so far he is hitting a slash line of .168/.271/.249, 3 home runs, and 9 RBIs with a -1.6 WAR.

The Cuban set the baseball world ablaze when he won the ALCS MVP in 2020. He then posted seasons in 2021 and 2023 with a 4.0 and 4.7 WAR respectively. Winning rookie of the year in 2021 and making the AL all-star team in 2023.

The 30 year old finds himself on the bench with his struggles and replaced by Dominic Canzone. Canzone is only 27 years old with just over a year of MLB service. Canzone is currently hitting .224/.309/.469 with 3 home runs and 6 RBI in 49 games.

Arozarena currently is being paid 11.3M a year and will have 2026 as an arbitration year before hitting free agency for the first time in 2027. With his struggles he might not be as valuable as a player to trade and there is the chance that his contract can be lowered in arbitration in the off-season.

The Mariners also have the option of sending him down to the minors in order for him to get back in the groove. The Mariners have some tough choices to make with Arozarena because something needs to happen, you can’t spend 11.3M a year for a guy riding the bench or hitting below the Mendoza line.

Julio Back Into the 3 Spot
Manager Dan Wilson noted that one of the big things about his tenure would be a reshuffling of the lineup on a roughly monthly basis. This would allow for players to demonstrate their value and then the reshuffling would be based on several statistical analyses.

One of the big surprises we saw at the beginning of May was Mariners superstar center fielder Julio Rodriguez dropping all the way down to the bottom spot of the lineup. Julio at the time had a .234/.261/.414 slash line with 4 home runs and 15 RBIs. The only other players with a worse average were the struggling Randy Arozarena and Cal Raleigh. Raleigh did have an increased production with 8 home runs and 21 RBIs when compared to Rodriguez.

Since then Julio has raised everything in his slash line up to .255/.288/.439 and added 4 more home runs in the month of May and 9 RBIs. He is currently 2nd on the Mariners in home runs and 3rd in RBIs which puts him in a perfect position to claim his spot back in the order.

With all-star voting already started Julio currently sits in 6th place for AL center fielders and his statistics are similar to top vote getter Cody Bellinger who is posting a .263 average with 6 home runs and 23 RBIs. Moving back into the 3 spot in the lineup should help Julio flourish some more and hopefully get back to the production that saw him win Rookie of the Year in 2022 and make all-star appearances and win the Silver Slugger in 2022, and 2023.

Prospect Report
1. SS Cole Young (21 years old, AA): .249/.321/.333, 1 HR, 19 RBI
2. 2B Colt Emerson (19 years old, A): No stats
3. SS Michael Arroyo (20 years old, AA): .203/.291/.261, 7 RBI
4. C Harry Ford (22 years old, AAA): .214/.272/.365, 5 HR, 22 RBI.
5. CF Jonny Farmelo (20 years old, A): No stats
6. RF Lazaro Montes (20 years old, AA): .230/.321/.286, 1 HR, 13 RBI
7. SP Jurrangelo Cijntje (21 years old, AA): 0-0, 1 SV, 14.1 IP, 5.65 ERA, 16 SO

That Switch pitching prospect of yours is getting lit up a bit in AA there.

Team’s scrapped its way to .500 thus far even with Randy and Julio playing kinda ass. Hopefully the team can catch fire a bit here in June for ya.

Yeah, I need to move on some of these prospects. 4 of my top 10 are SS and most of them are in AA and and they are all very young.

Yeah I'm hoping we can get stuff going. I got a method for setting the lineup and I'm mixing it up monthly right now. I think I might start doing it semi-monthly.

Yeah, it's been an interesting season so far. We are a bit off from the top teams but obviously not horrendous.
