Racing Louisville FC Land Dutch Keeper Regina van Eijk from Ajax in Late Transfer Surprise.

Just when it looked like the summer transfer window was ending on a sour note for Racing Louisville FC, the club pulled off a last-minute move that could shape its future for years to come.

Racing officially announced the signing of Regina van Eijk, the 22-year-old Dutch goalkeeper from Ajax, in a $38,000 deal completed just one day before the transfer deadline. The move comes in the immediate aftermath of Katie Lund’s departure to SGS Essen, signaling a swift pivot toward the future.

Van Eijk has been a standout for Ajax in the Eredivisie and is considered one of the more promising young keepers in the Netherlands pipeline. With sharp reflexes, excellent ball distribution, and confidence under pressure, she fits the modern mold of a ball-playing shot-stopper — and Racing plans to install her as the immediate starter.

While the shoes left by Katie Lund are no small ones to fill — the American led the NWSL in clean sheets at the time of her exit — van Eijk’s arrival is a clear investment in youth, with the club betting on her potential to anchor the defense for seasons to come.

Van Eijk’s arrival helps soften the blow of a transfer window that otherwise saw several frustrating outcomes for head coach Filipa Patão. The Bibiane Schulze Solano deal fell through at the eleventh hour, and Sarah Gorden’s loan to Levante UD blocked another defensive option. Not to mention, Sophia Kleinherne being completely off the table for Racing while Patão had been scouting her worth for weeks.

Departures of Sarah Weber to Sevilla and Jordan Baggett to KC Current trimmed depth, but the commitment to reshaping the squad is clear — and van Eijk’s age and pedigree suggest Racing is building with patience and purpose.

Despite going 1-4 in their last five, Racing sits just outside the playoff line at 7-4-6 (25 points) — ninth place in a crowded table. With Savannah DeMelo (6 goals, 16th in NWSL scoring) and Kosovare Asllani (4 goals, 25th in NWSL) leading the attack, the tools are there, even if the execution has been inconsistent.

As fans grow skeptical of Patão’s tiki-taka-heavy system, especially given the team’s struggle to score, the club will now hope that a stronger foundation in goal can be the spark for a late-season surge.

Van Eijk will likely make her Racing debut against the Portland Thorns on August 24, and all eyes will be on how the young Dutch keeper adapts to life in the NWSL.

It’s been a window of heartbreak and hope — but with van Eijk’s signing and the core intact, Racing still has time to turn this season around.
