Jerome Singleton names Ramon Stoneburner as starter heading into opener against Boise State
Jeff Longo -- Nevada Sports Net College Football Writer

The Nevada Wolfpack will look to repeat as MWC Champions and perhaps challenge for that 12th seed in the College Football Playoffs as they enter their third season under head coach Jerome Singleton, who recently named Ramon Stoneburner as the team's starting quarterback.

In the first official depth chart of the season, Stoneburner beat out redshirt freshmen James Feliz and Jalen Ramesh, along with true freshman Sam McCurdy, the talented four-star out of Texas. Tony McClease, another highly regarded true freshman, is listed as a starter at receiver along with redshirt sophomore Martin Gilliam, who is expected to miss the first month of the year with an injury.

Stoneburner is one of eight first-time starters on offense with seven on defense.

After dissapointing season opener, Jerome Singleton's Wolfpack land pivotal win behind youth movement
Jeff Longo -- Nevada Sports Net College Football Writer

Nevada head coach Jerome Singleton never once wavered from former starting quarterback Darian Molinaro, despite several multi-interception performances in Molinaro's first season as a starter in Singleton's first year as the Wolfpack head coach. It only look one half from Ramon Stoneburner, Molinaro's replacement, for Singleton to pull the plug in favor of the true freshman Sam McCurdy.

The decision hasn't just been favorable for the Wolfpack's future, which have a potential four-year starter in McCurdy, but their present and near future with McCurdy leading the Wolfpack to a program defining upset victory over Singleton's alma mater USC in the Coliseum.

It was a watershed game for McCurdy, Singleton and Nevada's program as Tony McClease, the key four-star signing from Los Angeles, returned the second half opening kickoff for a touchdown and silenced the crowd. Moses Denson, another four-star true freshman, had nearly 100 yards from scrimmage, spelling Gerald Whittaker who helped salt the game away with his tough running, averaging 4.7 yards per carry.

The three-point performance in the loss against Boise State seems like a lifetime away with two more P4 opponents before they enter the heart of their conference schedule. If the Wolfpack can split BYU and Alabama, netting two P4 victories, they'll be in prime position to be a potential playoff contender as a G5 champion. But perhaps more importantly, from a macro standpoint, the Wolfpack seem poised to have the type of run we've seen from the likes of Boise State and TCU in the mid-2000s. The offense features eight first time starters, including three freshman in McCurdy, McClease and guard Tobias Bibbs.

Defensively, second-year defensive tackle Larry Palepoi is among the Wolfpack's best players and the Wolfpack's secondary is filled with players with multiple years of eligibility left in corners Alex Marrero, Gabe Mady, Taylor Davis and Harvey Coutler.
