Chapter III: The Kid From Danville
The last days of the junior year was rearing it's head with two final games in the season. Not only that, test week came and gone as everyone had a bye for the Army-Navy game to determine who's the Commander-In-Chief. Today, particularly, Jodi was chill and was on the up and up with everything. Having turned his grades around from that mishap, getting back on the field to finish out the season, all was looking good despite the loss to Georgia. After much contemplating and mulling over, Jodi had settled and got his-self excited and ready for next season.
As Jodi lays across his bed watching a buddy-buddy cop film classic called, "Cop & A Half", there was a knock at his opened door, "hey hey hey!" Tiffany had announced her presence before entering and plopping next to her boyfriend.
"I didn't hear from you all day, what's up?"
"Nothing much, just got back from hanging with my parents, haven't seen them in a while, so went spent some time together."
"That's what's up? How they doing?"
"They're good as they can be for married couples. I finally got to talk to them about you."
"Oh yeah?", Jodi takes his attention from the movie onto Tiffany, "They're just now hearing about me?"
"Something like that. They knew I was talking to someone, but they didn't know it was you. And let me tell you, my Dad's jaw dropped and eyes widen when he heard your name. He's really a big fan of yours and followed every game of your season at Oregon."
"No shit? Wasn't expecting that. What your Mom say?"
"She's not into sports as much like that, but do attend games when Dad goes. She's just happy I've found someone and that I'm happy."
"That's awesome. Maybe one day I can meet them when the time's right."
"Wellllll, about that... I already invited them to next week's game."
"For real?"
"Yes, when Dad heard that you guys were playing Pittsburgh in the ACC Championship, I insisted that we show up and be in full support of you and team, especially after loss to them on Halloween."
Jodi quickly remembered the blowout that Pittsburgh had handed Georgia Tech back then. A 28-48 beat down. The only thing that soften the blow of that game was the biggest win of the season came the following week, beating the #1 Clemson Tigers, shattering their playoffs chances as Georgia shattered Georgia Tech's.
"Yeah, I owe Pittsburgh an L after how they did us."
"And we're all looking forward to it. You need to make up for that and that loss to Georgia by getting that ACC title babe, you need to bring it home", Tiffany encouraged Jodi as she grabbed onto his face gently, softly kissing his lips for incentive. "There's a reason why you two were pitted in the ACC game once again, show them why you're a Heisman winner and a national champion."
"You keep kissing me like that, I'ma show you something as well", Jodi shoots back in his baritone voice. Tiffany begins to blush and smile as she leans on him to proceed to deliver more affection for consequences. Forgetting the opened door and movie, Jodi pulls Tiffany on top, having his fill in his hands. Their intimate parlay comes to a halt as Tiffany hand grabs hold of a paper from under Jodi, taking a look at it her-self.
"Heeeeeyyy, you pass your exam!? Look at you! Why didn't you tell me?"
"I was, but you kinda distracted me with your assault on my face", Jodi continues to make kissing faces, making Tiffany laugh, slapping him in the face with the paper playfully as she straddles him.
"Jodi, I'm proud of you. Not many people care enough to study hard and get their GPA up to a 4.0, I'm really, really proud of your hard work."
"If it wasn't for you kicking my ass in gear, I don't think I would've. I'm glad to have you to keep me in line."
"You can thank my father for doing the same for me. You know he's a military man, but he means well and only want the best."
"That what you want for me? Want to see for me?"
"Of course! Why wouldn't I?"
"Trust issues on my mind, nothing to do with you. My past doesn't allow me to trust easily. As a man, we're not loved unconditionally, not like women and children. Who knows what you're motives could've been... But I like you, a lot. Feel like I almost love you, but I also am aware of what I'm doing in life, what it brings and the chaos that comes after. I guess I'm trying to figure out if you're with me for me, or anything else?"
A serious tone transform on Tiffany's face as she perched off Jodi's lap, pulling her skirt down before closing the room door. Sitting back on the bed beside Jodi, Tiffany reassured him of her-self and their relationship. "Jodi, I'm a pretty happy person, but since you've came into my life, I have never experienced more happiness than I have in my entire life. No birthdays or Christmases, no doll houses or toy jeeps I got as a child could compare to the blissful happiness of being next to you. You left me for a whole year to play football in another state. Granted, we wasn't really as serious as we are now, but you showed me you cared for me, about me, more than any of my past relationships has displayed. I knew I had something good in my hands the moment our eyes met that morning we worked out together. As Disney as it sounds, I saw my whole future in the windows of your dark brown eyes. Yes, I would like for you to be successful in your life, but it's an insult to my character as a woman to be here and subject myself as a trophy to you. What we got is real, Jodi, don't ever doubt that. I understand your past, we talked about it so many times, and I'm sorry you had to go through that growing up in California. But whatever you go, I go. Whatever you do, I'll support. We are a team and I want to see you win. More importantly, I want to see you happy."
Jodi sat there, staring into space, digesting everything he heard. It's always been a tug-o'-war in Jodi's heart ever since the foul shit his ex-girlfriend, Prisha, pulled back in high school, and first order of business was protecting him-self. But given the second chance, Jodi came to crossroads with him-self: Keep up his guard, shield his heart and potentially lose what could be the best woman in his life? Or take the leap of faith and see where the deep-dive goes. Either way, both roads leads to ups and downs, it's just a matter of how much is Jodi willing to sacrifice for peace...
"... My history gives me valid reasons to not trust anything or anyone. My birth parents, so-called friends growing up in foster homes, ex-girlfriend, it's just all bad news. The only real good things that came into my life is my "real" Mom, the friends I made here, you", Jodi explained. "It's not that I don't trust you, cause I do, I have faith in you, it's just the cards life has dealt me, I just can't trust it... Last year, I lost my best friend, Tyrone Wilson... He was murdered and was awarded no justice... But that name will never die as long as I live. You don't know how much it means to me when I say that is my brother. Was..."
"He is your brother", Tiffany confirms in him as she places her hand on his lap. "You sound like you were pretty tight with him, and I'm sorry he's not here with you. But I'm sure he's looking down on you as your guardian angel, watching you find your way to smile in his absence."
"I just want the person who took him away from me, his parents, his family, to know how much it hurts, Tiffany..."
"I know you do, but that's not your focus. They will get what's coming to them sooner or later. There's nothing more vengeful than Karma, her-self. I promise you that. But you have to focus on you, what's in front of you, and who you have with you. Don't let the lost of your brother be in vain." Tiffany pulls Jodi into her arms, resting his head on her chest. "You're my baby, I will never let no harm or foul press you in your time of peace. I will always be there to ward off those evil spirits, Jodi. Because I love you."
Jodi hear the words slip out of her mouth, rolling off her lips effortlessly while hearing her heartbeat. The heartbeat that pulsated in his ear as the sounds were recorded and captured in his memory bank. The sound of Tiffany's heartbeat, calm, continuous, steady, it felt like home to Jodi. When it came down to trust, Jodi found the deciding factor in his decision, a heart beat that tells all, informing him to let his guard down and rebuild.
"I'm sorry, over here getting emotional all of a sudden."
"It's okay, Jodi, you're human. I don't expect you to be this dead-receptive emotionless man. I'd be pretty worried for you if you were and uncapped yourself at the worst time. So get it out every now and then so you can refocus. Only thing that matters is you bouncing back better and stronger, that's a real man in my eyes."
Jodi puts his arm around Tiffany's waist, pulling her into his arms as he kissed the top of her head, "I appreciate you more than you know. I'm glad I got you in my life, and I want to keep you in my life."
"I'm glad you do," Tiffany says, looking into Jodi's eyes. "Right with you is where I always want to be."
"So, how about we got out of here and make a life for ourselves?"
"What do you mean?"
"I'm saying, I made the decision to go pro when the season is done. Throw my name in the hat, and if I get called up, we start our life there."
"Are you serious? You sure you're ready and not want to stay another year?"
"I think I'm ready, but then, it never hurts to polish my-self some more. Honestly, other than coming back to Georgia for you-", Tiffany smiles hearing that. "I was hoping to take Georgia Tech to the promise land, but I blew that when I made the bonehead decision to cheat on the exam. Had I didn't, I feel we had a chance... But... I also know the stories of guys who don't get out of school soon enough and get a contract before something bad happens. Should that be the case, at least we'd be set."
"So what's more important to you? Another year in college? Or your future? I mean, you're a global phenomenon already. Whether you notice it or not, people around the world knows your name. Plus, with the NIL deals you get, it's not like you're severely hurting for money."
"This is also true", Jodi admits to the NILs. Jodi was aware of his huge social media following, but never cared too much for the numbers, but despite his considered "flop season" compared to his time in Oregon, Jodi has been several of many topics on all sports media platforms.
"You know what? Let's do this. Here, give me your phone", Tiffany requested.
"My phone, my phone, where art thou", Jodi rambles as he search the left side of his person, spotting the phone in the window seal. After grabbing it and unlocking it, he hands Tiffany the phone, awaiting to see what she's doing.
Tiffany proceeds to open up his Twitter account and types of post without sending it, then hands it back to Jodi. "Without reading it, show me how much you trust me. All you have to do is hit the send button within the next ten seconds. Don't read it yet, just take the leap of faith."
"Leap of faith, huh..."
"Yes..." Tiffany then begins to count down from ten.
Jodi sits there staring a hole into Tiffany, trying to see if she's bullshitting or not, but no signs from her proved otherwise. To Jodi, it seemed she was serious with this intent. Without reading it and the countdown sitting at 3, Jodi takes that leap and sends the post.
"Done..."
"Okay, I'm glad you made a decision. You can read it now."
"Nah, I'll wait."
"What? Why? Come on, read it."
"No, I trust you. I'm sure you wouldn't have typed up any foolishness to make me or you bad. Right now-", Jodi puts his phone on silent and away, back on the window seal, "all I want to do is chill with you. I know you made the right call for me."
"Thank you baby, for having faith in me.", Tiffany leans in with a kiss, that lasted longer than it should.
"No need to thank me, that was just step one of my trust rehab."
"Oh really? Okay, then what's step two?"
Jodi pulls Tiffany back on top of him, gripping her small waistline, watching a smile run across her face from ear to ear. "Step two: you put on a show for me, then I put on a show next weekend in Charlotte."
"Ooohhh, bad boy!" Tiffany entertained. It was much needed for Jodi to relieve his tension, it's been a hell of a year with ups and downs, excitement and upsets. With the final season in college nearly written, Jodi was looking forward to what was next. All that remained was bringing Georgia Tech a ACC title and a bowl game to cap his collegiate career.
