Chapter II: Grindin
Suspended... From the football team... Words Jodi would have never guessed he'd hear from any coach. Usually, Jodi keeps a perfect attendance for every season he played football, be it high school or college, Jodi has never missed a day from suiting up. But suspension? Well, there's always a first for everything. The first blemish on Jodi's career. What makes it worse is that word got out and about on campus and social media. Talk about embarrassing. Just goes to show you, no matter how successful you are in life, for a little humility, there will come a time to pay the piper.
"There goes the man of the hour, "Mr. Slacker" him-self", Gabriel shouts from little distance as he approaches Jodi, who was sitting on the bench in front of the main building. "What's up man? What you doing out here? Looking for pity or something?"
"If I was, it definitely wouldn't but on this block. I've been getting the stank eye all day from people", Jodi complains as he gives dap to Gabriel after sitting down.
"Yeah, you did give the school quite the scare. They thought you got hurt or something, and your foolish ass just end up trying cheating on a test."
"It wasn't like it was my idea."
"What's that? Jodi not taking accountability?" Gabriel egged on.
"I didn't say that either. All I said that it wasn't my idea. But since I fucked up, I do own that. Got caught red handed."
"What makes it so funny is that you tried to cheat on the same test from last year on a whole new test!" Gabriel leans over, laughing out loud like it was the world's greatest joke. "Man, had you stayed here last year, you probably would've gotten away with it clean, but that was a whole new teacher, fam. What possessed you to think you was going to get the same test and such?"
"I guess, I didn't think it through. Had I known we was getting a new teacher, I would've never tried to cheat. I would've failed, but perhaps not this bad."
"So who put you up to it then?" Gabe inquired.
"I'm not saying no names, but it was someone on the team. Dude said his cousin had the answers from the test last year and offered it up." Jodi retold what led to the suspension. "I figured, take it easy and coast through the test and get ready for the mid-terms. But seeing we got a new teacher and a new test, that shit fucked me over big time."
"Can't always take the easy way out, my boy. Some things in life, you just have to take head on."
"Chuch", Jodi agreed. "So now... They got me doing mandatory studies. They said if I want back on the team, I got to take extra classes to get my GPA back up to satisfaction, and I still got to prepare for the mid-terms."
"And not a soul on campus would rather be in your shoes right now, cheating ass boy", Gabriel joked.
"Fuck you", Jodi rebutted.
Before Jodi could inquire about the remainder of Gabriel's day to parlay, Jodi's girlfriend, Tiffany, made her way towards the two. "There you are, I've been looking all over for you."
"What's up babe? Something wrong?"
"Yeah, I'm hearing about you being suspended from the team, I thought something serious happened. I had to hear from one of your classmates that you cheated on a test and the test cheats wasn't even for the right test!?"
"Not you too with this..." Jodi grieved with a sigh.
"How silly you have to be cheat on a stupid insignificant test?"
"Look, babe, I didn't know we was getting a new teacher, along with a new test. I fucked up."
"Like, I'm really embarrassed for you, Jodi. What? They just let you slide over there in Oregon as long as you kept winning and bring them a championship?"
"Honestly, no, I did pretty well over there to keep up my 4.0 GPA, so I-"
"Then why the hell did you expect anything to change coming back here!?" Tiffany interrupted, asking a valid question.
"Tiff, I'm sorry, I didn't imagine you would take it so hard, it's my fault."
"Of course I'm going to take it hard, you're my man! I support you in whatever you do, but not stupid decisions to make you look bad in front of the masses."
"Hey, relax, it's just a test. If I want to play again, I don't have a choice but to get my grades back up. I screwed up, I'm sorry."
Gabriel sat quietly, enjoying the ripping Tiffany was giving Jodi, but their commotion was drawing eyes, which proceeded him to tap Jodi on the arm for attention, "y'all take that inside somewhere, too many eyes and ears over here."
Both Jodi and Tiffany look around, seeing the looks coming their way, both agreeing to move the conversation to her room since her dorm was the closest.
"Jodi get those grades up, we need you back on the field. Tiffany, stay on his ass!" Gabriel encouraged before they went their separate ways.
"You know I will, let's go Jodi..."
Jodi complied with the stern Tiffany request, not wanting to further upset her or dig him-self in a deeper hole. Instead of staying confused to why she was so upset, he focused on the task at hand after Tiffany had tore into him more and finally coming to agreement to study together, or more so Tiffany tutors Jodi.
("For however long it takes, I'll be cramming that head of yours. If you're not practicing, in class, eating or sleeping, I want you studying. No days off, Jodi!")
Those words rung in Jodi's head often with each day passing. As much as he enjoyed being with Tiffany, he couldn't help what gotten into her until he realized that she comes from a military family. Jodi was counting his lucky stars that she wasn't putting him through boot camp as well, getting up four in the morning just to study...
It's been three weeks so far, and week after week, day after day, Jodi has abide by Tiffany's demands. If he wasn't at practice, which was his only waking escape from studying, he was damn nearly in a book every hour of the day, cramming away. With Jodi away, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets played three games without their star QB, but they've held up nicely, going 2-1 with Zach Pyron at the helm. A couple of wins against Wake Forest and Louisville, but Auburn was too much in between. Unfortunately for Zach, his brief reign came to an end as good news came Jodi's way.
"Hey babe! How the eligibility test go?", Tiffany asked Jodi as he exit the classroom from testing. She spent nearly twenty minutes waiting on Jodi to finish up after he tested for an hour.
"After the professor took a while to grade papers, I can finally say I passed with flying colors!"
"Hey! Congratulations!" Tiffany throws her arms around Jodi's neck, sparing him a few kisses for his academic bounce back. "Well, more like good job getting your grades back up. You wouldn't be in this position had you not tried to cheat."
"You're right, I shouldn't have. Cause then I wouldn't have to sit through your ruthless tutelage", Jodi joked. "Is this how tough you plan on being on our kids?"
"Our kids?" Tiffany asked. She wanted to smile hard in his face, but steeled her face as her heartbeat paced up from the exciting thought of Jodi choosing her to mother his offsprings.
"Just a question."
"Jodi, don't joke like that. What do you mean by that? Do you want us to have kids?"
"One day, if we can make it that far."
"What reason you have to believe that we won't? We just spent a year apart. I honestly didn't think you were coming back, and yet I still stayed loyal to you."
"Did you really?", a question that blatantly offended Tiffany as her face became serious, pushing off Jodi.
"Alright, sorry, I didn't mean it like that."
"Say what you mean, Jodi, cause there's only one way to take that."
"I mean, we're college kids. I figured things would happened, the usual college shit."
"Jodi... I don't know who you dealt with in your past that hurt you, but don't ever compare me to one of these hood buggers that'll lay down with anyone for cheap thrills." Unbeknownst to Tiffany, that struck a cord in Jodi, because of the painful reminder of Prisha.
"Sorry, like I said, I didn't mean it like that."
"For someone to even come out their mouth silly, makes me wonder if you been loyal to me."
"Of course I have. If I wasn't on the field, I was in class or keeping to my-self. I hardly did anything, except this one stupid ass prank they pulled on me. I always stayed in touch with you just about everyday."
"I know you have, and it's nice to know I can take you for your word, I believe you. I don't think you would play me like that."
"You? Never. I may have fucked around with my education, but I'm not gonna fuck around with you. Can't afford that."
"Don't try to sweet talk your way out of this", Tiffany poked at Jodi with a slight smile on her face. Despite the question of loyalty being on the line, Tiffany's mind was still fixated on the possibility of being a family. She couldn't be too mad at him if he was entertaining the thought of taking it to the next level.
"I'll definitely make it up to you, but right now, I want to take these papers to Coach Key, let him see that my grades are back up and I'm ready to ball."
"Think that's a great idea, let's go. And hey, I'm really proud of you. You didn't slack up for a bit and really put your mind to righting your wrongs. I admire that about my man."
"I'm glad you do, love..."
After a quick call to Coach Key for his availability, the two made their way over to his office. Tiffany decides to wait outside, letting Jodi take all "glory". With a couple knocks on the door, Jodi entered with papers in hand, ready to show and prove.
"Hey, Jodi, what can I do you for, son?"
"Hey, was just passing by, I wanted to show you some good news I got today, courtesy from my professor", Jodi says while handing over the results.
"Okay, lets see here... Oh wow, you got your grades back up?"
"Yes sir, in only a matter of three weeks time to boot."
"Wow, this is impressive, I wasn't expecting you to see your grades make a comeback until mid-terms. How'd get it done in three weeks?"
"Well, as much as I like to take all the credit for the hard labor, my girlfriend whipped me in shape for the test. Took it and aced it. She didn't want to come in and steal the spotlight on what matters I supposed."
"That's awesome, looks like we got the real MVP in your corner. You better hang onto that one, not many would help behind the curtains and remain back there for you to get the adulation. Either way, this is some good hardnose work from you. You nearly left a stain on your reputation with the team, I don't know what possessed you to do what you did, but my books, you've paid your dues."
"Thanks Coach, I promise you, it'll never happen again."
"Trust me, I know it won't. You're a bright kid, you're not stupid enough to let the hard work from your little lady go down the drain."
"No sir. She definitely earned a bit of shopping and dinner. The very least I can do to show my appreciation."
"Smart man, but put that on ice for a while. Cause I'll be seeing you in Blacksburg this weekend, if you're ready to play, that is."
"Ready? Born ready, more than ready, always ready. I appreciate Zach for holding the team down in my absence, and I hate that we loss to Auburn, but that loss is on me. I wasn't there for the team. So I have to make it up to them against Virginia Tech."
"I like your attitude. I'm glad to have you back and I'm sure the team will be glad to have you back as well, long as you keep your nose clean."
"Most definitely, Coach, you have my word."
"Alright, son, welcome back to the team. Let's raise some hell this weekend", Coach Key encourages Jodi as he handed his papers back to him, shaking his hand afterwards.
"Won't let you down, Coach, thanks for the second chance."
"Don't worry, Jodi, we all need one sometimes. But let me remind you of one thing, man to man. This is your junior year, Jodi. I don't know if you have plans of staying another year or going to the NFL, but there are eyes watching your leadership skills more than your play. Don't fuck it up, heed my words."
With Jodi taking those words to heart quickly, he understood the type of scrutiny he's going to be under from here on out for the remainder of the season. Be that as it may, the over joyous Jodi remained unwavered, "I hear you, Coach, crystal clear. I haven't made a decision on what I'll do, that's really none of my concern right now. My focus is on the season at hand, when it's over, I'll cross that bridge. Right now, I'm a Yellow Jacket."
"I'm really glad to have you back, Jodi. Let's show Virginia Tech what they're dealing with this Saturday, for now, get out of here and stay out of trouble..."
