GARCIA AND FRIENDS CELEBRATE HIS LATE TD THAT PUT THE GAME AWAY
---

Montgomery, Alabama -
Kent State overcame a pair of interceptions and a largely ineffective running game to secure a win the the Camellia Bowl over Old Dominion. The win is only the second bowl game victory in Kent State history. In doing so Kent State secured their 12th win of the season, the first time in program history that they have won that many games. It is also just the second time in program history for double-digit wins.

After a Gavin Garcia three yard touchdown capped their first possession the Flashes gave up 10 straight points to Old Dominion via a 39 yard Ethan Sanchez field goal and a two yard touchdown run by Bryce Duke. Kent State drove into the redzone on their next possession but Tommy Ulatowski was picked off in the endzone trying to find his favorite target Chrishon McCray.

After a three and out and a punt by Old Dominion and a sack on first down Ulatowski found McCray behind the defense for a 73 yard score and a 14-10 lead midway through the second quarter. Following another Old Dominion punt the Flashes put together a 13 play drive that culminated in a four yard Ulatowski to McCray touchdown pass just before halftime.

After a pair of punts to start the second half it was Old Dominion striking next when Ulatowski was hit while releasing a pass and the Monarchs Langston Williams picked it off and took it to the house, making the score 21-18 after a two point conversion.

Kent State punted, Old Dominion punted then Kent State punted again.

Old Dominion then put together a solid drive that spilled over into the fourth quarter and ended with a 47 yard Ethan Sanchez field goal. 21-21.

Another Kent State punt and another Old Dominion field goal made it 24-21 Monarchs with 2:58 left on the clock.

After a short pass to Gavin Garcia it was Ulatowski once again finding McCray behind the defense for a 73 yard touchdown, putting the Flashes back on top 28-24.

Old Dominion would go four and out while barely using any time off the clock and giving the ball back on their own 40 yard line. Seven plays later Garcia put the game away with a four yard touchdown run, his second score of the game.

“Amazing season! Extremely proud of the kids, the coaches. Everyone around the program!” was all Coach Veidt could get out before he was doused in Gatorade.

Kent State OC McAlary accepts Kansas head coaching job

Inherits 1-11 team
By Martin Green | @mgreenmacsports | December 31, 2025

"This was probably one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make in my life." Jordan McAlary said during a press conference that followed Kent State's win in the Camellia Bowl. "I've enjoyed my time here immensely."

McAlary, who oversaw one of the nation's top offenses at Kent State this season, said he sought counsel from a number of coaches he looked up to and ultimately decided that the fit felt right at Kansas.

The Jayhawks won 2 games in 2024 and just one in 2025 while scoring just 15.2 points per game, third worst in the nation.

"We certainly will miss him." Head coach Tyson Veidt said. "But we all wish him the best and we hope for success for him."

Kansas fired Lance Leipold after five seasons with the team. After a 2-10 season in 2021 the team improved to 6-7 with a loss in the Liberty Bowl in 2022. In 2023 the team made a huge leap, going 9-4 and winning the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. Leipold and the Jayhawks could not recreate the magic of that season, winning just three games total over the past two seasons.

"Very excited to get started and work on assembling my staff." Coach McAlary replied when asked how he felt about the move.

Quarterback Tommy Ulatowski, who set the Kent State season and career records for passing yards (8,269) as well as the season record for passing touchdowns (37) under McAlary's tutelage heaped on the praise.

"He's probably the best coach I have worked win in my entire career." Ulatowski said. "Great mind for the game, incredible teaching ability and always knows how to get the best out of everyone."

Receiver Chrishon McCray, who put up historic numbers in 2025, shared the sentiment. "I definitely would not be the player I am without Coach Mac. I owe a bunch of my success to him. No doubt."

McAlary Names Key Assistants as Kansas Football Rebuild Begins
Former Tulsa DC Chris Polizzi comes aboard
By Dee Pinya | @dpinya | January 7, 2026

Image

New Kansas head coach Jordan McAlary is wasting no time in assembling his coaching staff, naming two key assistants as he begins the challenge of turning around the Jayhawks’ program. The two hires bring both experience and a familiar connection to McAlary, signaling his desire to create a cohesive and collaborative environment in his first season at the helm.

The most prominent hire is Chris Polizzi, who joins Kansas as defensive coordinator after serving in the same role at Tulsa. Known for his aggressive defensive schemes and ability to develop talent, Polizzi brings a fresh approach to a Jayhawks defense in need of revitalization.

“Chris has a great attitude and a great philosophy for how to build and coach a defense,” McAlary said during the announcement. “He’s a guy who knows how to maximize what he has on the field. I’m looking forward to working with him to build this team back up into what we know it can be.”

At Tulsa, Polizzi's defense was known for its versatility, often confusing opposing quarterbacks with unique formations and pressure packages. His ability to adapt to different personnel will be crucial as Kansas looks to rebuild its defense after a challenging season.

On the offensive side, McAlary brought in a familiar face in Michael Porter Sr. The two have a long history, having played together at Louisiana and coached alongside one another under Porter Davis at Hawaii. Most recently, Porter Sr. served as the passing game coordinator at Kent State under McAlary. At Kansas, Porter Sr. is listed as an offensive assistant and is expected to play a vital role in developing the Jayhawks’ offense.

“Mikey and I have been working together for several years,” McAlary said of his longtime colleague. “When we played, I knew I could count on him to catch the pass, and now I know I can rely on him to get our players in the best positions to succeed. Plus, he’ll keep me in check when I get a little overzealous with the play calling.”

Porter Sr.'s expertise in the passing game will be a key component of McAlary’s offensive strategy as Kansas looks to establish a dynamic, balanced attack. Known for his innovative ideas and commitment to player development, Porter Sr. will play a crucial role in getting the offense up to speed quickly.

With the hirings of Polizzi and Porter Sr., McAlary has set the tone for his coaching staff: experienced, innovative, and most importantly, deeply connected to his personal philosophy of building from the ground up. The Jayhawks' new era is underway, and McAlary is putting the pieces in place to make an immediate impact.
