Kent State's Chrishon McCray wins Biletnikoff

Flashes junior WR snubbed for Heisman

Kent State WR Chrishon McCray turned in a top 20 performance in terms of receiving yards in a season. He also tied for the tenth most receiving touchdowns in a season. For his efforts he received the Fred Biletnikoff Award. The Fred Biletnikoff Award is presented annually to the most outstanding receiver in American college football by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, Inc.

The award is named for Fred Biletnikoff, who played college football at Florida State and professionally with the Oakland Raiders and Montreal Alouettes. Any NCAA Division I FBS player who catches the football through a forward pass is eligible to be selected as the award winner, though in practice, and as it has been awarded to a player at that position every year, it is considered a de facto honor for the sport's most outstanding wide receiver. Tight end Kyle Pitts of the University of Florida was one of 3 Biletnikoff Award finalists in 2020.

McCray is only the second player from the MAC to win the award with the other being Randy Moss who claimed the prize in 1997.

The Heisman Memorial Trophy was awarded to Southern Methodist WR Matthew Golden, whose 1,002 yards and 14 touchdowns pale in comparison to McCray's a fact not lost on the Kent State star who posted the following picture on his social media page after the ceremony.

Kent State locks in four more recruits

#516 Sumner headlines additions
By Don Knotts | @theotherdonknotts | December 18, 2025

Kent State has secured commitments from four more players following their conference championship win.

Dayton Ohio Athlete Nick Sumner, the 516th ranked player nationally, has announced his intentions to join the Golden Flashes. Sumner is projected as a WR despite playing several positions in high school.

Jeremy Skaggs, the 39th ranked FS in the class, has also signed on. He hails from Urbandale, Iowa.

Next up is Chesapeake, Virginia's Tevin Cantrell played offensive tackle, defensive end and tight end in high school. He is the #1030 ranked player nationally. Cantrell projects as an interior offensive linesman.

Joining them is defensive end Cornell Heggie of Smyrna, Georgia. Heggia is the 126th ranked strongside defensive end. At 6'5” and 291 pounds Heggie should be ready to make an impact from day one.

Kent State's recruiting class is currently ranked 61st overall and fourth in the MAC. Akron leads the MAC with an impressive 28 ranking, powered by their 17 3 star commits. Miami(OH) is ranked 40th and Western Michigan is just behind them with the #42 ranking.

In other recruiting news OLB Nathan Lucien has dropped Buffalo and Marshall from his top five, leaving Kent State, UMass and Ohio in that order.

Safety Layne Flanagan has also narrowed his list to three with Kent State overtaking UMass for the lead and Buffalo in third place. Eastern Michigan and Marshall were dropped.

Ethan Boyett, a linebacker from Severn, Maryland, recently moved Charlotte from fifth on his list to second. Kent State retains the top spot.

Kent State OC McAlary delaying interviews

McAlary remains focused on this season
By Martin Green | @mgreenmacsports | December 22, 202

“We're still playing ball here. We're focused on the task at hand.” Kent State offensive coordinator Jordan McAlary replied when asked about potential job offers.

McAlary is expected to be heavily pursued after leading Kent State to one of their best offensive seasons ever, including helping receiver Chrishon McCray put up absurd numbers that led to him winning the Biletnikoff Award.

“It's always rubbed me the wrong way that coaches need to take all these interviews before they've finished the season where they're at. Then you see them either leaving before a bowl game or just not 100% locked in on it. I'm focused here. If there are offers still on the table after that then I will take some time to consider all my options. Until that clock says zero in Alabama I'm with Kent State."

“It's something that comes up every year when you have talented coordinators.” Kent State head coach Tyson Veidt explained. “We're certainly hopeful to hang onto those guys but at the same time we're very proud of what they've accomplished this season and we would encourage them to pursue those opportunities that are presented to them.”

Kent State will face Old Dominion on December 30th in the Camellia Bowl in Montgomery, Alabama.
