August 11, 2006 | Jets Camp Insider
TAMPA, Fla. -- Rainy weather conditions proved for a defensive showdown on Friday, as the New York Jets took down the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 10-7, at Raymond James Stadium in week one of the preseason.
"I saw some things I liked, and some things I didn't," said head coach of the Jets, Eric Mangini. "Third downs, we need to be better. And our defense played well – with a little help from the rain, and a rookie quarterback – but our run defense has to improve."
The Bucs ran the ball for 131 yards behind Cadillac Williams, Michael Pittman, and Mike Alstott, but lost a key fumble in the redzone, thanks to Justin Miller that would have set them up for a game-tying field goal or go-ahead touchdown, all but sealed their fate.
Jonathan Vilma led the Jets with 10 tackles, putting any doubt to rest concerning his fit into the new 3-4 defensive scheme.
"I thought we were well prepared, and it felt good to get the win," said Vilma. "Really it seems to cater to the pass much better than the run, so we still have to figure that part out."
On offense, the Jets got really solid play from both Chad Pennington and Patrick Ramsey. Each protected the ball and were able to hit a deep pass – a 38-yard bomb to Justin McCareins for Pennington, and a 51-yard catch-and-run touchdown to Laveranues Coles for Ramsey, who took advantage of a second-string mismatch.
New York will visit the Washington Redskins next Saturday for more preseason play.

Solid win, still need to figure out a lot of things on offense. Glad to see Pennington was able to stretch the field a little bit.

yeah i mean it was rainy, so that played a factor. would still like to have had scored more. his arm strength is def suspect... good thing is his accuracy, so his qb vision cone allows for some quick read progressionsCaptain Canada wrote: ↑04 Oct 2024, 12:18Solid win, still need to figure out a lot of things on offense.
