KENT STATE QB TOMMY ULATOWSKI SCORES A RUSHING TD
---
Kent, OH - After a close loss last week at Pitt the Flashes were looking for a convincing win as they played host to St. Francis at Dix Stadium. It was St. Francis who got on the board first via an eight yard touchdown run by Dorian O'Neal. The score was set up by St. Francis' Dre Leverette picking off a Tommy Ulatowski pass in the endzone to spoil what looked like a promising first drive for Kent State.

Kent State tied the game on the first play of the second quarter when Ky Thomas powered into the endzone from a yard out. Thomas' score was set up by a pair of long Ulatowski passes, first to Chrishon McCray for a gain of 18 and then to Isaiah Batton for 35 yards. Batton led all receivers with 142 yards and two scores. Gavin Garcia ran for a gain of twelve and then Ulatowski scrambled for a gain of 10 yards down to the one yard line.

Later in the second quarter Ulatowski scored on a nine yard run and connected with Batton for a 16 yard score. St. Francis cut into the lead with a Noah Schwartz touchdown grab courtesy of Brock Ladler for a five yard score just before the break.

With a score of 21-14 at halftime Kent State was not where they had hoped to be.

The second half was all Golden Flashes with Thomas scoring a second one yard TD and Ulatowski and Batton connecting for a 74 yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Andrew Glass connected on a 23 yard field goal and Garcia picked up a two yard rushing touchdown to make the final 45-14 Kent State.

Coaches Corner

Offensive Coordinator Jordan McAlary
By Don Knotts | @theotherdonknotts | September 10, 2024, 9:14am EDT

Each week in the days following Kent State's game I will spend a few moments chatting with members of the coaching staff. I'll share some key points in this column.

This morning I spoke with offensive coordinator Jordan McAlary following Kent State's big win over St. Francis.

When you play an FCS team like St. Francis what are some of the differences between that and a MAC opponent or a FBS team from another conference?
Well there are a lot of differences for sure. One big thing is the kind of element of surprise. We're not familiar with these guys, there not all over ESPN so all we have is some limited tape to look at. That and they really tend to come in looking to prove something, like when we went into Pitt a couple weeks ago.

What were some of your takeaways from the win?
Certainly the ability to put up 45 against anyone is a good thing to see. Passing game looked good, real high completion percentage. Great job by the line in pass pro and running the ball. Had a real high yards per rush number. A couple turnovers we were able to overcome but we're always stressing ball security so you need to look at those closely. Overall a great performance offensively.

Can you give us a player of the week?
You know it's probably a few guys this week. (Runningback) Ky (Thomas) really stepped up. He didn't get a lot of touches at Pitt but we went in wanting to try to split things more evenly and he went over 125 and got in the endzone a couple times. Isaiah Batton was open all game, got in the endzone twice. Big splash play for us. Hard to pick just a couple but it's probably those guys.

Big game down in Tennessee this weekend. What are you doing differently to prepare?
Whenever you go into an SEC stadium and face a team like that you need to be prepared for the noise and you need to be prepared for the speed. We've got to have some success in the running game and try to limit their possession.

Yeah. We're hoping to be able to run the ball and give them less touches. Actually I should add that to the interview.

Was glad to take it to FCS East. In my NCAA14 coach career I lost to them to start my DC career.

I added a few guys to the board then switched to auto. Not doing any recruiting. QB wasn't scouted much but the range for speed looks like we may have some cheese en route.
