Tampa's rounding third base with home plate in sight, can they clinch a wild card spot?
Adam Lemon -- Dynasty Sports Rays Beat Reporter
After beginning the month on the wrong side of a three-game sweep by the Houston Astros, the Tampa Bay Rays managed to turn things around, winning their next five series to keep pace with the New York Yankees for the final wild card spot.
Another strong month could have the Rays finish as high as the third wild card seed as just half a game separate the Astros, Mariners and Yankees from the Rays. The Rays won't play any of those teams for the rest of the season, instead ending the regular season against 88-win Minnesota, AL East leading Baltimore, a Phillies team approaching 100 wins already, the Guardians with the top wild card spot before a more favorable stretch against Boston and Detroit sandwiched between a series against Toronto.
Junior Caminero leads September call-ups
Top ranked Rays prospect Junior Caminero has officially been called up to the Rays MLB roster along with pitching prospect Hurston Waldrep and first baseman Xavier Isaac.
Caminero is the second ranked prospect in all of baseball according to MLB.com and was at one point this season the batting king at Triple-A with an OPS of .949. He's come back down to the earth in the summer months but still remains an intriguing prospect who will be on plenty of shortlists to win the AL Rookie of the Year next season. Caminero played seven games last season with the Rays, bating .235 with a home run and seven RBIs.
Acquired in a trade with the Braves at the trade deadline, Waldrep is a potential future ace who Rays' fans will get a glimpse at as he joins the Rays talented bullpen. Waldrep has been electric with the Biscuits, allowing just two runs in his four starts. He's a well rounded pitching prospect with an arm that should continue to get stronger as he develops physically and while he's likely a few years away from reaching his potential, a strong showing in September could speed up his trajectory to the big leagues.
Isaac is your typical power hitting first baseman who does fill a need for the team as that backup first baseman behind Yandy Diaz, who has cooled off since his hot start to the season. Diaz is 32 and if the Rays are out of playoff contention by the final games of the season, Isaac would get some spot stars.
A prospect that the Rays did not promote was shortstop Carson Williams, who has drove in 66 RBIs this season at the Double-A level. A potential reason for this could be the development of 27-year old Taylor Walls who has been a pleasant surprise for the Rays since the trade of Jose Caballero. Walls is batting .313 with five stolen bases and four RBIs in the month of June.
Drew Rasmussen unlikely to pitch this season
With less than a month left in the season, it's looking like the 2024 season will be a wash for Drew Rasmussen as he continues to recover from his elbow surgery back in 2023.
Rays manager Kevin Cash said that the left-handed pitcher is 'at least a few weeks' from pitching in simulated live games and while Cash did not rule out a postseason return, Rasmussen is currently not on the Rays 40-man roster and a roster spot would need to cleared out to activate him.
This late into the season, the juice might not be worth the squeeze of rushing Rasmussen back and his first taste of live action being in the postseason.
