LeBron James powers Lakers to first win of the season

Lakers cut down turnovers, notice big difference

The Los Angeles Lakers can rest easy now that they've gotten their first win of the season, defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves 103-96 in their home opener in front of a sold-out crowd. LeBron James scored 35 points (14-of-22 from the field), including 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Anthony Davis added 18 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block. D'Angelo Russell displayed more the ball handling duties that he is going to be called upon for this season finishing the game with 12 assists and zero turnovers. The Lakers as a team had five turnovers in the game, a vast difference then the 39 turnovers they had in the first two games of the season. Anthony Edwards led the Timberwolves with 29 points, three rebounds, nine assists and one steal. Karl-Anthony Towns was a non-factor tonight, finishing with 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. The defensive pressure from Anthony Davis forced Towns to play off his game, by doing so finishing 5-of-22 from the field and 0-for-9 from the three-point line. The Lakers aggressive defense was key in tonight's game. They were only whistled for five fouls the entire game and the Timberwolves only attempted three free throws. The Lakers bench was more active tonight thanks in large part to Buddy Hield (12 points, 3-of-6 3Ps) and Gabe Vincent (8 points, 2-of-4 3Ps). The Lakers will get a couple of days off before a back-to-back set of games at home against the San Antonio Spurs.

The Los Angeles Lakers played host to the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night as the two teams met for the first game of a back-to-back set this week. The Spurs coming off another disappointing season where they missed the playoffs, but were pleased with the way Victor Wembanyama played during his rookie season which saw him take home Rookie of the Year honors. Wembanyama had a game-high 37 points along with 12 rebounds and five blocks, but was 3-of-10 from the three-point line including the one that would've counted if it had gone in at the buzzer, but Andre Drummonds superb defense on the perimeter forced Wembanyama to take a contested three-pointer that hit the front of the rim and off to the right as the Lakers held on for a 97-95 win, their second straight win after dropping their first two games on the road to start the season. Devin Vassell added 14 points and Jeremy Sochan had 13 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals. LeBron James finished the game with 29 points (11-of-17 FGs), six rebounds and two assists. Anthony Davis had 18 points, 16 rebounds, five assists and six blocks. After seeing these two teams in a game that came down to the final possession, fans should expect more of the same when they play again on Thursday.

The Los Angeles Lakers saw their brief two game winning streak snapped on Thursday night at the hands of the San Antonio Spurs. After a hard fought battle on Tuesday night between these teams which saw the Lakers escape with a two point victory, Spurs second year center, Victor Wembanyama delivered in the clutch and led his team to a 104-98 victory over the Lakers. Wembanyama had a game-high 33 points (14-of-29 from the field) along with 14 rebounds, one assist, two steals and one block. Off the bench, Nikola Topic, the seventh overall pick in this draft back in June added 16 points (6-of-9 shooting), three rebounds and seven assists. Devin Vassell was the only other Spur in double figures, finishing with 15 points and hitting 4-of-7 from the three-point line. LeBron James led the Lakers with 28 points, but had his worst shooting game of the season so far, going 13-of-32 from the field. James also had five rebounds and six assists. Anthony Davis finished with 19 points (9-of-12 from the field) along with seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks. D'Angelo Russell scored a season-high 18 points, knocking down 4-of-6 from the three-point line and dished out six assists. Now the Lakers will head out on the road for a brief three-game road trip, with stops in Toronto Chicago and Detroit.
