We didn’t struggle much with Dallas this season, but Luka has been doing teams dirty in the postseason.
I was surprised Boston made it. Especially with Tatum going down early on. But here they are.

It was a grind. Definitely think this would have gone to 7 games if Zion was still on the floor.

Will Luka and the Mavs Upset the Lakers?
The Dallas Mavericks (42-40) slid into the playoffs as the number seven seed after defeating the Portland Trail Blazers in the first game of the Play-In Tournament. They have managed to ride the energy of the Play-In win all the way to the Western Conference Finals where they have a chance to make history as the first 7th seed to advance to the NBA Finals.
“At the start of the playoffs, we just emphasized that the seeding doesn’t matter,” said Dallas head coach Jason Kidd. “Our goal was to get here. Once we got here, it starts from zero.”
Dallas faced Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies, down 3-2 before taking Game 6 behind a 46 point performance by Luka Doncic to force Game 7. The MVP candidate was definitely he driving force behind this series win, recording a triple-double in 5 of the Mavericks’ seven games, putting him in some pretty elite company. No one has ever recorded that many in so few games. Wilt Chamberlain holds the record for the most in an entire postseason with 7 trip-dubs over 15 games, but at this rate, that record could easily be broken.
Up next was a tough semi-final series against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The largest margin of victory for the Mavs in that entire series was five points. The two games that Dallas lost in that series were by double-digit margins.
It was all about the Luka Magic in this series as well as Doncic scored 52 points in Game 3 to give Dallas a 2-1 series lead. He even scored 40 in their Game 4 loss, where they were obliterated by a score 128-102.
Over 13 postseason games, Doncic has averaged 40 minutes. He’s averaging a triple double throughout the playoffs with 33.5 points, 10.6 rebounds and 12.2 assists per game.
“He is playing with a renewed focus, doing everything he can to take us to that next level,” said Kidd.
While Luka has played exceptionally well, it’s going to take more than Luka Magic to get Dallas past Los Angeles. As, shown in the series against Minnesota, when Dallas won, it was a game that could have easily been a loss and when they did lose, it was big. Christian Wood has been the Mavericks’ second leading scoring averaging 17 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.
The Lakers have breezed through the playoffs at this point, sweeping Portland and knocking off New Orleans in 5 games. Their shooting has been hot with rookie David Grace shooting over 50% from the field and right around 40% from beyond the arc. Grace is averaging 33 points per game. Anthony Davis has also been a force, averaging a double-double of 18.9 points and 11.4 rebounds per game. LeBron James has averaged 16.4 points, 9 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game.
“They’ve been playing some of their best basketball this postseason, but so have we,” said Lakers coach Darvin Ham. “We just have to keep doing what we’ve been doing and take it one game at a time.”
Will Dallas have enough in the tank to pull off another upset this postseason?
