A modern day Paul Hornung, Alabama's McCoy is chasing immorality in the playoffs
An All-American as a true freshman at receiver, a Heisman contender, Walter Camp Award winner and Maxwell Award Winner as a quarterback and a Jim Thorpe Award winner at defensive back. Anyone of those accolades would make a college football player one of the greatest to ever do it. For Alabama's Braxton McCoy III, he's done it all. Except for one thing.
"I have to win a championship," says a smiling McCoy at media day ahead of the Tide's semi-final matchup against No. 2 Penn State, "That's the reason I came here and we have to get it done"
McCoy's bold decision to transfer out of UCLA after leading them to the Rose Bowl to play defensive back for Alabama has paid off with McCoy winning the Thorpe Award, given to the nation's top defensive back and was selected for a second time in his career as a first team All-American.
Alabama, even with a hiccup against Western Kentucky, also finds themselves in the playoffs with a chance to win their third consecutive national championship. They'll have their hands full with Penn State's offense which is ranked 13th in the country in points per game and 17th in passing offense led by quarterback Drew Allar and Biletnikoff Award winning receiver Kalen Saunders (99 receptions, 1322 yards, 16 touchdowns).

San Diego's Braxton McCoy ready to hand another loss to Oregon, deliver a championship for the city of San Diego
Johnny Murray -- San Diego Union Tribune Sports Columnist
Former Clairemont High School (San Diego, Calif.) quarterback Braxton McCoy will be back out west when the Alabama Crimson Tide face off against the Oregon Ducks for the College Football Playoff National Championship at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
McCoy led Clairemont to an undefeated regular season as a senior, their first in program history, and notched their first playoff win in decades before bowing out in the second round. McCoy then committed to UCLA where he stared as a true freshman for the Bruins at receiver before making the move to quarterback where he won the Maxwell and Walter Camp Trophy.
Heading into his junior season, McCoy transferred to Alabama to play defensive back in preparation for the draft, a move that took him away from home once more after playing for three different high schools.
"[Transferring high school] definitely got me ready to make such a move," McCoy told the San Diego Union during Media Day, "A lot of guys get comfortable being close to home. When I was at [UCLA], I could make a quick trip and see my family the days off or they'd come and see me, watch my games all the time. You're still around your friends and everyone close to you so when you go the other side of the country, it definitely would have been a crazy adjustment but I already did it a few times back in high school so it was second nature."
McCoy is considered a potential first round pick after winning the Thorpe Award, making this his possible last collegiate game and his last chance at winning true gold before the end of his storied college career. It's one he hopes ends with a championship ring not just for him but for the city of San Diego.
"Everyone talks about Los Angeles or even Oakland when it comes to the top talent [in California]," McCoy added, "But there's guys like me, Reggie Bush, Ricky Williams, there's a ton of talent coming out of San Diego and I'm definitely trying to put us on the map and make sure we get recognized."
Standing in the way is McCoy's favorite team growing up and the reason why he went to UCLA coming out of high school which was to play for Chip Kelly who was the coach of the Ducks in the 2010s. Since losing to Oregon as a true freshman in a regular season game where he was held catchless, McCoy got revenge that same season with a 13 receptions, 122 yards performance in the Pac-12 championship game.
The following season, McCoy threw for two touchdowns and rushed for 103 yards in a 23-21 victory over the Ducks in the regular season and rushed for 109 yards with two touchdowns in the Pac-12 championship game to beat Oregon in their last three matchups.
"They're definitely a team that talks a lot," McCoy says of his personal rivalry with the Ducks, "I know they're going for blood and they've been letting me know about it so it should be a fun game, you get up for games like these."
