Senior laden defense ready to lead Alabama back to the national title
Alabama senior Dallas Turner is returning for a senior season to lead Alabama's defense after recording just 1.5 sacks last season in what was a disappointing junior campaign for the preseason All-SEC nominee.

Turner is among four returning starters on the defense along with defensive end Jah-Marien Latham, linebacker Chris Braswell and cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry. UCLA transfer Braxton McCoy, the converted quarterback, is listed as a co-starter at both corner and safety. McCoy has been a standout performer in fall camp.

McCoy also changed his number from No. 21 to No. 12, the number Nick Saban wore at Kent State.

Once an experiment, Braxton McCoy III is the backbone of Alabama's top ranked defense
Manny Ledo -- The Athletic

"It's on us, we're going to have to win this football game. Ain't nobody else coming off that bus!"

This was Alabama junior defensive back Braxton McCoy III's plea to his teammates in the second quarter, tied up at seven against Texas in Tuscaloosa with the Longhorns driving down the field.

Not only would Texas' drive end up fruitless, they would go the rest of the game without scoring and McCoy's interception in the fourth quarter sparked a 14-0 Alabama run in the final four minutes of the game to keep the Tide undefeated. It was yet another coming out party for McCoy whose introduced himself to the college football world a few times over now.

"He's just an excellent communicator," says Alabama defensive coordinator Vinnie Sunseri, who was a key figure in getting McCoy to transfer from UCLA to Alabama after playing receiver and quarterback for the Bruins, "I think he's got a ton of potential and room to grow as he's reacclimating [to defensive back] but one thing he was very good at very early on was his communication with his teammates and that's key."

McCoy played every snap in the Texas game, a common occurrence these days as he's typically the signal caller on defense, alternating between safety and nickel at the heart of Alabama's defense which ranks first in scoring defense, total defense, rushing defense and forced fumbles.

He leads the team in tackles with 27 with his physicality being a surprise to even scouts and talent evaluators who always preferred him on defense coming out of high school as a versatile athlete. DraftScout currently has a fourth round grade on McCoy while DraftBuzz views him as a second to third round pick.
