Heisman ceremony full of drama as McCoy loses Heisman to Memphis' Brandon Thomas, announces entry into transfer portal
Jessica West -- SI.com

UCLA sophomore quarterback Braxton McCoy was expected to win the Heisman Trophy after an electrifying season where he set school records in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. Not only did the San Diego native not win the Heisman, he announced shortly after that he will be entering the transfer portal and not playing in the Rose Bowl.

Memphis running back Brandon Thomas' historic night was quickly upstaged by McCoy's announcement via social media that he would be transferring from UCLA. Thomas edged out McCoy in a controversial decision with McCoy's rushing numbers -- as a quarterback -- almost identical to Thomas. McCoy did take home the Maxwell and Walter Camp but all of that was second fiddle to the transfer news.

UCLA head coach Chip Kelly was notably not in attendance for the Heisman Ceremony, where McCoy finished 2nd. McCoy cited his long term future and NFL aspirations as one of the reasons for his transfer.

Former UCLA QB Braxton McCoy to take official visits at Alabama, Georgia and Miami
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Rising junior Braxton McCoy has scheduled official recruiting visits with Alabama, Georgia and Miami as initially reported by 247 Sports.

McCoy, who won the Maxwell and Walter Camp Award with UCLA in 2023, threw for 2,498 yards and rushed for 1,729 yards for the Bruins before announcing his entry into the transfer portal after finishing second in the Heisman Trophy voting.

The Crimson Tide will need to replace senior Bryce Young at quarterback while Georgia and Miami have returning starters in Brock Vandagriff and Jake Garcia. Vandagriff, a redshirt sophomore last year, threw for 2622 yards and 24 touchdowns for the Dawgs while Garcia averaged 198.7 yards per game with twelve touchdowns to match his twelve interceptions.

McCoy is expected to make a decision in the coming weeks in order to enroll for the spring semester.

Former All-American, Maxwell Award winner Braxton McCoy set to transfer to Alabama
Sonny Henderson -- ESPN.com College Football Writer

Former UCLA quarterback Braxton McCoy announced via social media that he will be transferring to Alabama.

McCoy, who threw for 2,498 yards and rushed for a school record 1,729 yards last season with 38 total touchdowns, visited Georgia and Miami this past week before finishing the weekend in Tuscaloosa. McCoy's visited was extended into Tuesday before the former Maxwell Award winner made the decision to go with the Tide.

In his Instagram post, McCoy stated that he will be making yet another position switch and going back to defensive back, the position he was originally recruited at by Nick Saban and the Tide when he was coming out of high school as a four-star prospect where several other Power 5 programs also recruited McCoy as a defensive back. McCoy cited the opportunity to be personally coached by Saban as one of the reasons he picked Alabama over Miami and Georgia.

McCoy was an All-American as a true freshman at receiver before making the move to quarterback for his sophomore season.

'Dream come true' for UCLA transfer McCoy in playing for Saban, Crimson Tide
Jacob Tucker -- AL.com College Football Writer

The first time that Braxton McCoy III stepped foot onto The Thomas-Drew Practice Fields, he could tell it was just different.

"I'm a football junkie," says McCoy, "I'm a competition junkie so even before spring [practices], I got a feeling that this was a different environment and one I would love being a part of but once we got out onto the field, you realize it's just a completely different animal."

The transfer from UCLA shocked the college football world by leaving the Bruins prior to their Rose Bowl appearance after being an All-American receiver as a true freshman and being the team's starting quarterback last fall. He then opted to enter the transfer portal before landing in Tuscaloosa, nearly 2,000 miles away from his hometown.

McCoy has been a bit of a football nomad since his prep years, playing at three different high schools in three different states at different positions. It's helped make his transition down south and at defensive back a bit smoother under the watchful eyes of head coach Nick Saban, one of the reasons why McCoy transferred.

"When you get an opportunity to play for [Saban], be coached by him, go through his program, you have to take it. It's a dream come true for any defensive back to play at Alabama."

The San Diego native hasn't played the position since his junior year of high school but impressed coaches enough in the spring to get some snaps with the first team defense during Alabama's spring game and showed flashes of physicality at nickel. He had a coverage bust early in the spring game but ended the same drive with an impressive pass breakup near the endzone. He finished the day with four tackles, including one behind the line of scrimmage on a third down stop.
