New Orleans, Louisiana -
In a thrilling Sugar Bowl matchup in New Orleans, the Kansas Jayhawks edged Notre Dame 30-23 in a game that tested their resilience and showcased quarterback Isaiah Marshall’s growth as a passer. With their vaunted rushing attack stifled for much of the night, Marshall stepped up, throwing for 368 yards and three touchdowns, continuing the momentum he built in the Big 12 Championship win over Colorado.

Kansas’ rushing game, led by Johnny Thompson Jr., faced a tough challenge against a determined Notre Dame defense. Thompson Jr. fought hard for 97 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, while Avery Muamba was bottled up, managing just 43 yards on 16 attempts. The Jayhawks’ passing game, however, more than compensated for the struggles on the ground. Tight end Tre'Dez Green led the way with 142 yards and two touchdowns on nine receptions, including the game-winning score. Keaton Kubecka added 87 yards on eight catches, and Damien Keo contributed 68 yards on seven receptions. Jayden Hamm chipped in with a 6-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter.

Notre Dame’s defense, led by Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa with 15 tackles, put up a strong effort. Tackle Sean Sevillano Jr. and defensive end Loghan Thomas each recorded a sack, keeping the Kansas offense under pressure throughout the game. On the other side, Kansas’ defense was equally effective, with Lyle Carreon recording 1.5 sacks, Tony Terry adding another sack, and TJ Harbor chipping in with half a sack. Jalen Todd also grabbed a critical interception that helped Kansas stay in control.

The game saw its defining moments in the final minute. After Notre Dame backup quarterback Wayne Head hit Cam Williams for a 27-yard touchdown—Williams’ third of the night—the Irish took a 23-22 lead with just 28 seconds remaining. Kansas, starting from their own 25, needed a near-perfect drive to win. Marshall delivered.

First, Marshall hit Kubecka on a crossing route, and Kubecka got out of bounds at the Kansas 45. On the next play, Marshall found Keo for a 16-yard gain, then connected with Austin Dogins for 14 more yards, bringing Kansas to the Notre Dame 25-yard line with 11 seconds remaining. Head coach Jordan McAlary, showing confidence in his star quarterback, kept the offense on the field rather than settling for a field goal attempt. Marshall rewarded that trust, finding Tre'Dez Green on a seam route for a 25-yard touchdown. Marshall then ran in the two-point conversion himself, putting Kansas up 30-23 with just six seconds left.

Notre Dame’s final hope came on a Hail Mary attempt from Wayne Head, but the pass was knocked away, sealing the Jayhawks’ victory and punching their ticket to the College Football Playoff semifinals. Kansas’ defense had its hands full with Notre Dame’s star receiver Cam Williams, who finished with 167 yards and all three Irish touchdowns on five receptions. Quarterback Kenny Minchey threw for 182 yards and two touchdowns before exiting due to injury, while backup Wayne Head contributed 46 yards and a score in relief.

“Notre Dame made it tough on us,” said Kansas head coach Jordan McAlary. “They bottled up our run game, but Isaiah Marshall showed incredible poise. His growth as a quarterback has been phenomenal, and he’s playing his best football at the perfect time. I couldn’t be prouder of this team.”

With the win, Kansas moves on to the College Football Playoff semifinals, where they will face the winner of UAB vs Pittsburgh. The Jayhawks, riding high on their momentum and the stellar play of Marshall, will look to continue their magical season.

Jayhawk Talk

Each week following their game Kansas Head Coach Jordan McAlary makes an appearance on KLWN to talk about the game, we'll include a few key points in this article.

On Notre Dame’s pass defense:
"We knew coming into this game that Notre Dame had a stout defense overall, but we saw some vulnerabilities in their pass coverage. They’re aggressive up front, and that left some opportunities for us to attack with our passing game. Isaiah Marshall did a phenomenal job of recognizing those opportunities and delivering when it mattered most."

On Trey’Dez Green’s big game:
"We felt like Trey’Dez was going to be a tough matchup for them. He’s such a unique talent—big, fast, and physical. Notre Dame likes to play man coverage, and we knew his size and athleticism would create mismatches. He came through in a huge way for us, especially with that game-winning touchdown. We’ve been waiting for this kind of breakout performance from him all season, and he picked the perfect time to deliver."

On the struggles in the running game:
"Notre Dame’s front seven is one of the best we’ve faced all year. They made it really hard for us to establish the run, and credit to them for how well they played up front. Johnny Thompson Jr. fought for every yard he got, and Avery Muamba never stopped working. It wasn’t our best day on the ground, but the guys kept grinding, and we made plays in other areas to make up for it."

On the defensive performance:
"I thought our defense played a really solid game. Cam Williams is a special player, and he made some big plays for them, but overall, we did a good job of limiting their other options. Jalen Todd’s interception was huge, and our pass rush showed up at critical moments. Lyle Carreon, Tony Terry, and the rest of the guys up front battled all night long. It was a gritty performance by the whole unit."

On the upcoming matchup with Pittsburgh:
"Pitt is a great football team. They’ve been one of the most consistent programs in the country this season, and Eli Holstein is one of the best quarterbacks we’ve seen all year. It’s going to be a big challenge for us, but that’s what you want this time of year. We’ll need to be sharp in all phases of the game to come out on top, but I know our guys are ready for the challenge. It’s playoff football—this is what we’ve worked for all season."

Arlington, Texas -
The Kansas Jayhawks punched their ticket to the National Championship game with a dominant 35-13 win over Pittsburgh in the Cotton Bowl. After leading by just a single point at halftime, the Jayhawks shut out the Panthers in the second half, outscoring them 21-0, to claim a resounding victory and set up a showdown with Clemson and Heisman-winning quarterback Christopher Vizzina for the National Championship.

Pittsburgh struck first, capping their opening drive with a 23-yard Sam Carpenter field goal. Kansas quarterback Isaiah Marshall was sacked on the Jayhawks' first play from scrimmage, but he quickly recovered, connecting with Damien Keo for a 41-yard gain that set up a 2-yard touchdown pass to Rashard Slay later in the dirve. Kansas kicker Shaq Durham missed a 45-yard field goal later in the quarter, allowing Pittsburgh to reclaim the lead early in the second quarter when Eli Holstein found Zion Fowler-El for a 7-yard touchdown.

Midway through the second quarter, the game turned into a battle of interceptions. Marshall was picked off by Matt Jowers, but the Jayhawks' Roddy Orr intercepted Holstein just five plays later. Kansas capitalized on the turnover when Marshall hit Keo for a 9-yard touchdown to take a 14-10 lead. Taylor Davis added to Kansas’ defensive momentum with another interception of Holstein on the ensuing drive. A shanked punt buy Kansas gave Pittsburgh excellent field position, leading to Carpenter’s 57-yard field goal at the end of the half that narrowed Kansas' lead to 14-13.

The second half, however, belonged entirely to the Jayhawks. Marshall and Keo connected for a 23-yard touchdown to open the third quarter. Davis picked off Holstein again shortly after, and Kansas wasted no time turning the turnover into points as Marshall found Keo for an 8-yard score, pushing the lead to 28-13. The Kansas secondary continued to shine, with Terrance Yates intercepting Holstein in the end zone to halt a critical Pittsburgh drive.

Early in the fourth quarter, Kansas came up inches short on a fourth-down attempt, but their defense again rose to the occasion. Jayvaun Russell intercepted Holstein at the goal line, thwarting another Panther scoring opportunity. Kansas then orchestrated a masterful 12-play, 97-yard drive capped by a 2-yard touchdown run from Johnny Thompson Jr. to seal the game. David Tripp added the exclamation point with the Jayhawks' sixth interception of the day, allowing Kansas to run out the clock and celebrate a decisive victory.

Key Performances:
Isaiah Marshall: 28-of-40 passing, 272 yards, 4 TDs, 1 INT; 69 rushing yards.
Damien Keo: 7 receptions, 98 yards, 3 TDs.
Avery Muamba: 104 rushing yards on 20 carries; 6 receptions for 51 yards.
Johnny Thompson Jr.: 18 carries, 106 yards, 1 TD.
Kansas Defense: Forced six interceptions, including two by Taylor Davis, and stifled Pittsburgh’s offense in the second half.

Pittsburgh's Holstein, who entered the game with just eight interceptions all season, was forced into six by a relentless Kansas defense that delivered clutch plays in critical moments. Roddy Orr led the Jayhawks with 12 tackles, while David Tripp and Donte Cantrell added 10 each. The Jayhawks’ defensive backs proved instrumental, shutting down the Panthers' scoring threats and maintaining control of the game.

For Pittsburgh, Holstein completed 19 of 39 passes for 242 yards, one touchdown, and six interceptions. Zion Fowler-El was a bright spot with 90 yards and a touchdown on eight catches, while linebacker Matt Jowers tallied an astounding 20 tackles, a sack, and an interception.

Looking Ahead:
With their Cotton Bowl victory, Kansas secures a spot in the National Championship game against Clemson. The Jayhawks will face the daunting task of containing Vizzina, but with their explosive offense and opportunistic defense, Kansas has proven they’re capable of rising to the occasion.

This dominant second-half performance against Pittsburgh solidifies Kansas’ place among college football’s elite and sets the stage for what promises to be an electrifying title game.
