Patriots contain Lamar Jackson as Drake Maye scores 3 TDs in win over Ravens
New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye was visibly frustrated after the Patriots had to settle for a field goal after having the ball on the one-yard line. Rhamondre Stevenson's touchdown was called back due to a penalty and the Patriots would be called for two more penalties on the next three plays, kicking a field goal to take the lead. On the next possession, backed up by penalties once more, Maye would throw an interception on third and fourteen.
He would complete all but one of his remaining pass attempts and would lead the Patriots to back to back scoring drives to put away the Baltimore Ravens 31-14 on Saturday afternoon and to advance to his first ever AFC Championship Game.
Maye's counterpart Lamar Jackson was completely bottled up by New England's defensive gameplan, often dedicating two players to spy on Jackson to keep him contained in the pocket. Jackson would complete 75 percent of his passes but average just 5.2 yards per attempt with New England's secondary taking away any big plays.
This was highlighted on the drive ensuing Maye's second interception of the day when Baltimore had a chance to take the lead, trailing 17-14 but on third and four, New England only rushed two defenders with Keion White and Chase Young spying on Jackson. Jackson tried to roll to his left but was tracked down by White. After punting the ball, Baltimore's defense was unable to come off the field as the Patriots went on a sixteen play drive that took up must of the fourth quarter.
New England converted three third downs, including a third and thirteen completion to Oscar Delp and when the Ravens finally got a stop on third and four from the Baltimore 25 yard line, Maye would find Barion Brown for a ten-yard completion. Two plays later, he scrambled it in for his second touchdown of the day.
With time running out, the Ravens went for it on fourth and thirteen from their own 27-yard line with three minutes left in the game but were stopped short with Derrick Henry punching it in on the ensuing drive to end all hopes of a comeback. Scoring Summary Quarter 1 Hunter Henry 4 Yd pass from Drake Maye (5:20) Nate Wiggins, returned interception 32 Yds (1:49)
