Lawrence, Kansas - The Kansas Jayhawks secured a gritty 31-23 victory over the Arizona Wildcats, bolstered by a determined performance from quarterback Isaiah Marshall, who made his return to the lineup. Marshall, despite being banged up throughout the game, showcased resilience by splitting time under center with Brad Matlock.
Kansas struck first with Marshall capping off a strong opening drive with a 6-yard touchdown run. The junior quarterback displayed flashes of his dynamic playstyle, completing 7-of-12 passes for 56 yards and a touchdown while also adding 48 rushing yards on nine carries. However, after taking a few hard hits, Brad Matlock stepped in to provide stability. The sophomore signal-caller finished 12-of-16 for 70 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown pass to Damien Keo in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
The Jayhawks leaned heavily on their ground game, with running back Avery Muamba leading the way. Muamba tallied 119 yards on 16 carries, while Johnny Thompson Jr. added 105 yards on 17 attempts. Kansas' diverse rushing attack kept the Wildcats' defense on its heels all game.
Keaton Kubecka emerged as a key target in the passing game, hauling in eight receptions for 72 yards and a touchdown. His 2-yard score in the second quarter, delivered by Marshall, was a pivotal moment that gave Kansas a 17-10 halftime lead.
Defensively, the Jayhawks showcased a balanced effort. Donte Cantrell led the team with eight total tackles, while T.J. Yates added seven. Damani Maxson contributed three tackles and a crucial tackle for loss. Logan Brantley recorded the team's lone sack, applying consistent pressure to Arizona quarterback Brayden Dorman.
Arizona managed to stay competitive, capitalizing on a pick-six by Oscar Burris and a pair of touchdown passes from Dorman. However, Kansas’ defense held firm when it mattered most, denying a late two-point conversion attempt in the fourth quarter.
Head coach Jordan McAlary praised his team's resilience postgame, stating, "Isaiah [Marshall] gave us everything he had tonight, and Brad [Matlock] came in and stepped up big when we needed him. This was a team effort, and I’m proud of how we found a way to win."
With the victory, Kansas improved to 9-1 on the season, continuing their march toward a Big 12 championship berth. Arizona, meanwhile, fell to 6-4 in what has been a season of ups and downs for the Wildcats.
Kansas will look to build on this momentum as they prepare for their next matchup, where their dual-quarterback dynamic could play a critical role once again.
