Recruiting Update

Kansas' recruiting class is in shambles as top three rated targets commit elsewhere.

Eric Fredrickson, the top ranked MLB and #12 player overall has signed with Alabama. He had Kansas second last week but dropped them to third before announcing his signing with Alabama.

DT Tavares Sands, the number two defensive tackle in the nation and 13th ranked player overall, moved Kansas from third to second earlier this week before also announcing he would be joining the Crimson Tide.

Finally OLB Connor O'Neal, who is ranked 89th overall and fourth at his position, has announced his commitment to Arkansas. O'Neal has Kansas listed as his second choice.

“We're confident in our recruiting process and we're not reaching for the panic button.” Kansas head coach Jordan McAlary explained. “We'll refocus and redouble our efforts and close the deal with some kids we're really excited about.”

Kansas is one of only three schools yet to have a player committed.

Cincinnati, Ohio -
In a hard-fought matchup between two 4-1 Big 12 teams, the Kansas Jayhawks secured a 28-21 victory over the Cincinnati Bearcats, improving to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play. The Jayhawks relied on a srong running game and timely takeaways on defense to overcome Cincinnati's explosive moments.

Kansas running back Johnny Thompson Jr. had a historic night, rushing for 118 yards on 18 carries to eclipse the 2,500-yard mark for his career. Avery Muamba added 80 yards on the ground and scored a touchdown, while Adonis Saturday and Terrelle Warren also contributed rushing scores.

Through the air, Keaton Kubecka led the Jayhawks with six receptions for 65 yards, including a pivotal 6-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter from quarterback Brad Matlock. Despite throwing for just 140 yards with one touchdown and one interception, Matlock made timely plays to keep drives alive. Muamba chipped in with three catches for 28 yards, showcasing his versatility.

Cincinnati's defense was led by Joey Hepburn, who tallied an impressive 16 tackles. The Bearcats also recorded four sacks, including contributions from Thomas Michaels, Troy Regovich, Juan Cannida and Garrison Butler. Will Hawthorne intercepted Matlock, adding to the defensive effort.

The Kansas defense stole the spotlight with game-changing plays throughout the night. Logan Brantley was a standout, recording two sacks, including a critical strip sack and recovery. Tony Terry added another sack, while Jeremiah Moses, Terrance Yates, and Jayvaun Russell each grabbed interceptions, capitalizing on Cincinnati quarterback Brady Drogosh's struggles.

Drogosh had a rollercoaster evening, throwing for 189 yards and two long touchdowns to Dakarai Anderson. However, his four turnovers (three interceptions and a lost fumble) proved costly. Anderson was the Bearcats' offensive star, hauling in three catches for 103 yards and two scores. Running back Manny Covey also impressed, rushing for 120 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.

The game was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading punches early. Kansas opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run by Warren, but Cincinnati quickly responded with a 42-yard touchdown pass from Drogosh to Anderson. The teams remained tied at 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw both teams find the end zone. Cincinnati running back Manny Covey broke free for a 10-yard touchdown run, giving the Bearcats a brief lead. Kansas quickly responded with Avery Muamba powering in for a 1-yard touchdown to tie the game at 14-14 heading into halftime.

Kansas took control in the second half with backup quarterback Adonis Saturday, who came in for a few plays to give the Kansas offense another dimension, finding the end zone on a short run. Kubecka's fourth-quarter touchdown provided a crucial cushion. Drogosh connected with Anderson for a 55-yard score late in the fourth quarter, but Kansas held on thanks to their defensive resilience.

Key Takeaways
Kansas' defense forced four turnovers, including three interceptions, which stifled Cincinnati's momentum.
Johnny Thompson Jr.'s milestone night underscored his importance to the Jayhawks' offense.
Cincinnati's pass rush was effective but could not overcome Drogosh's miscues.

Kansas' victory strengthens their position in the Big 12 race as they continue to build a strong season under head coach Jordan McAlary. Meanwhile, Cincinnati will look to bounce back after a tough loss in which mistakes overshadowed their big-play potential.

Jayhawk Talk

Each week following their game Kansas Head Coach Jordan McAlary makes an appearance on KLWN to talk about the game, we'll include a few key points in this article.

McAlary commended his team's defensive performance. "The turnovers were the difference in this game," McAlary said. "Logan Brantley’s strip sack and recovery, along with the interceptions by Moses, Yates, and Russell, really set the tone. Our guys stepped up in big moments, and that’s what we needed to beat a tough Cincinnati team."

He also highlighted Johnny Thompson Jr.’s milestone night. "Johnny has been the heart and soul of our offense for a while, and watching him surpass 2,500 career rushing yards was a proud moment for all of us," McAlary said. "He’s the kind of player who embodies what Kansas football is all about—tough, hardworking, and dependable."

While praising the win, McAlary also acknowledged areas for improvement. "We gave up a few explosive plays, and there’s still work to be done, but I’m really proud of how this team continues to fight and find ways to win on the road in a hostile environment."

On the Jayhawks #3 ranking:
"It's a testament to the hard work and resilience of our players and staff. We’ve earned this recognition, but the work is far from over."

On quarterback Isaiah Marshall's injury:
"Isaiah’s made great progress, and there’s a strong chance he’ll be available for this week’s game against Arizona. We’ll continue to evaluate him throughout the week and determine not just if he’ll play, but how much. His health and long-term readiness remain our top priorities."
