Chapter I: Training Day
Image

Belville, New Jersey, about a 20-30 minute drive from the MetLife stadium, depending when and who was driving. It became the newest residential locale for Jodi and Tiffany. It took a bit of convincing from Jodi to get Tiffany's parents' graces to allow her to move in and live together as they were firm believers of marriage over domestic partnership. But domestic partnership had become overly common these days, and they realized that they'd just be holding Tiffany back from her slice of happiness imposing their ideal much longer. Jodi was a charmer, this The Johnsons had discovered very quickly from prior gatherings, but they found some trust in him as he was serious about Tiffany. With both Jodi and Tiffany packed up and ready, they made their way to their new home.

"Babe, is that the last of the boxes on the truck?", Tiffany asked.

"Yeah, finally. I didn't think we had this much, or is this most of your stuff?"

"Don't get cute. Mommy just wanted to make sure we have everything we needed to start."

"She must really think we're strapped for cash or something."

"No, but she had some really nice furniture pieces kept in our shed, they're were sitting for me when I got my own place."

"I see. Well, at least we don't have to any real furniture shopping, except for a new bed."

Jodi had closed on a house not long after learning where he'll be playing for the next four years. A two bedroom-two bathroom home worth just over half a million dollars. It was straight highway robbery with the amount of land they were getting, but yesterday's prices aren't today's as they say. Luckily for the two, the newly purchased home had some really eloquent furniture that made the place luxurious, yet homey. The two unpacked boxes after boxes , organizing and storing away. After a few hours, they decided to take a break and catch up on their conversation about Jodi's father, Donovan.

"So, your father, alive and well, suddenly just pop up into your life like that?", Tiffany asked as confused to the sudden surprise.

Yeah, like, after all this time. I get my-self through college, I'm making all this money, I'm building my-self up-"

"You're getting famous", Tiffany added.

"Famous? Nah, that ain't me love."

"Pft! 6.7 million followers ain't nothing to scoff at, Jodi. You got a small nation of followers that's looking to support and hate on you, either way, you're going to be famous, be it design or choice."

"I guess", Jodi shrugged. "I'm not really in it for the fame though."

"Of course you aren't, but it just happens. Let it happen and see what doors it can open for you. Look at Caitlin Clark, a millionaire before even gracing professional level of basketball. The right timing in life had blessed many lives, including yours. Your mom is set, you're set, we're set. We can just coast and do what we want, what we love."

"I hear you, and that's true, we can. But now, there's weed in my green pasture. What am I to do about it?"

"I don't know, get a cow, let it eat it? Something?", Tiff Joked, but Jodi was hardly in the mood for laughs. Though things in life were progressing and pushing him to focus on football and it's upcoming season, this revelation was still a shock to him. Even more so, it weighed on his mind whether it was true that was he indeed his father or not.

"How much did you two talk since that day?"

"Not much. After he came around to the house, We didn't talk afterwards until I got some information out of Mom. I mean... I knew I was an orphan all my life, that's all I really knew of my-self. With no background history, no family trail, nothing, I was just a child in the world who didn't know from where they came. I didn't get a legible copy of my birth certificate until I started living with my Mom, Cassia. She helped me get all my identification in order, and once I got that, I tried searching for the names that were on my certificate. With no results, I was just lead to believe that they were either dead or fake names..." Jodi paused for a minute to gather his next memory into words. "So, after he showed up, I talked to Mom and she came clean about him, visiting more than once... Wanting to speak to me... But she always turned him away, and I never knew none of this."

"Wow, Jodi, I'm sorry. It must've made you pissed about the situation of learning someone that's potentially your father, a family member."

"Initially, it did, but she broke it down to me, she only wanted me to finish school and follow my dream until I was of age to deal with it, if it's true or not... It was her way of protecting me, I guess."

"I can see that. Who knows where you'd be or end up right now had you talked to him then. And had it been true that he's your Dad, I'm sure you'd try to fight your way into living with him."

"Honestly... No, I wouldn't have... I just wanted to know if there was someone out there for me, who shared my blood."

"I'm sure there's plenty of people in your family that's waiting to discover you. Everything happens when it's suppose to, babe. Everything in your life, my life, our lives, come with purpose. Maybe now was the right time for him to appear in your world. And now, it's up to you to decide if he's a valid character in your story."

"You're right..."

"If anything, when the time arises, cause I know we got so much going on right now, but when it's time, you should reach out to him, find him and talk with him. See what he has to say and clear the air."

"And what if he's not who he say he is?"

"... You'll know what to do when the time comes. You've been the lone wolf all your life that has became the leader of your own pack. Only you have the final say. Whatever it is, I will follow, my love." Tiffany was adamant in her allegiance with Jodi, able and willing to endure the rocky tides that are yet to rear. Come hell or high water, Tiffany was all in. That was one of the many attributes Jodi had fallen in love with about her.

As the two settled into their new home, they also found themselves getting familiar with the city and surroundings. It didn't take long for them to look for fun, finding a nightclub nearby, Marbella Lounge. A few drinks and a few dance songs later, Jodi and Tiffany found themselves hitting it off better than usual, ultimately leading to a rendezvous for nightcap. A couple weeks later and one missed cycle, Tiffany made her announcement to Jodi that they were expecting. Unlike the incident with his ex-girlfriend, this time, Jodi knew this was one of one...

Some time after, just before training camp began for the NFL, Jodi found himself at the mall in Elizabeth, shopping around. Unbeknownst to him from behind, Jodi had his focus irrupted but the strange voice calling from a distance.

Image

"Oi! Rogue Mon! Fancy I and I see you here, wah gwaan mi bredren?"

"Oh shit, Jozif, what's up man? What are you doing here?", Jodi double back and greets his teammate.

"Just ordering a few tings to pick up and send back home to Croydon, mi Ma and sista', ya' know."

"Don't blow through all that money, it's going to be a long half of year we got to grind out," Jodi joked.

"Small up ya'self, Jodi! Soon enuff I pull up with a contract ya' size. Mi no like how the NFL don't put no respect on 2nd round. Mi barely scratch ten mill. Tch! Bombaclot, looka' I talking petty ova' money. Bless up, bless up, star. Man go number one for a reason, can't be mad at the deservin' outcome.

"Yeah man, don't sweat all that. I'ma put you to work as long as we're on the same team. Gonna make the league notice you for that big ass payday."

"Respect, good to know gone had a good time mashin' up the defense. You seem ready for the big day, true or no?"

"True man, we're stepping into the big leagues, in more than one way for me. After the season is done, I'll be stepping into fatherhood soon after", Jodi reveal

"Rogue man, hard at work already! Bless up, congrats bredduh! Got a little one of my own, a daughter, Jazmin. She's a real proper Farrakhan, you get me?"

"That's awesome. I can't imagine the difficulty trying to be a parent on the road."

"It's tuff, yeah? But I chose to provide for my youth. Never have to want for a ting."

"That's what it's all about, putting the a better future in their hands."

Just then, Jozif's phone goes off. Reaching into his pocket for it, he learns his baby mother calling. "Speak of the devil, my old lady on the line. Aye, Jodi, mi take this call, star. I see you at training camp. We'll make the Giants a real proper team again!"

"You already know my guy. I'll see you at work, buddy."

Jozif made his departure to tend to his call and Jodi minded his duties on fulfilling the errands that Tiffany requested. With Tiffany growing into her first semester, Jodi wanted her off her feet as much as possible, even if she's capable for a while longer. Despite the nerves from anticipation of being a father, Jodi was more excited that football season was just around the corner. A couple weeks of training, and it's on the road. It would be without question that while on the road, Jodi would see to it that Tiffany would have help around the house. From learning of his supposed father, to becoming a father, Jodi struck an ironclad with him-self to always be there, no matter what.
