Lawrence, Kansas - In a gritty Big 12 showdown marked by resilience and injuries, Kansas held on to defeat Baylor 36-33, improving their record to 7-2 (5-1 Big 12). It was a game filled with momentum swings and drama, punctuated by a gutsy performance from the Jayhawks, who battled through key injuries, including to starting QB Isaiah Marshall and RB Avery Muamba. Both players returned to action, combining for the game-winning touchdown.
Baylor opened strong with a pair of methodical drives, but Kansas' defense held firm, limiting the Bears to two field goals from Andrew Mast. Kansas took the lead on their second possession when Isaiah Marshall found Damien Keo for a 17-yard touchdown on a well-executed corner route, giving the Jayhawks a 7-6 edge.
In the second quarter, Baylor QB Nate Bennett put his team back on top with a 4-yard rushing touchdown. Kansas responded swiftly as Marshall connected with Muamba for an 18-yard score. However, a critical interception by Baylor’s Carmello Jones halted the Jayhawks' momentum, setting up Nick Ficken’s 2-yard TD run, giving Baylor a 20-14 lead at the half.
Kansas faced adversity early in the third quarter as Marshall left the game with an injury after a 12-yard completion to TE Jaden Hamm. Brad Matlock stepped in, but it was the ground game led by Johnny Thompson Jr. and Muamba that powered a scoring drive, capped by a 5-yard touchdown run by Thompson Jr.
Baylor responded as Nate Bennett hit Micah Gifford for a 20-yard touchdown strike on third down, though the two-point attempt failed. The Jayhawks answered back with a momentum-shifting interception by Terrance Yates, which led to a 2-yard touchdown run by Glen Jue. A successful two-point conversion pass from Adonis Saturday to Keaton Kubecka put Kansas ahead 29-26 entering the fourth quarter.
The final quarter was packed with drama. Kansas’ defense initially held, but an errant pass from Marshall was picked off by Baylor’s L.C. Naylor, who returned it 23 yards for a touchdown, flipping the lead back to Baylor 33-29.
Undeterred, Kansas mounted a resilient drive. Facing a critical fourth-and-one, Johnny Thompson Jr. powered through for a 16-yard gain. Marshall, shaking off injuries and the earlier interception, hit Jaden Hamm for a key 23-yard completion. With just over a minute left, Marshall found Muamba out of the backfield for a 10-yard touchdown pass, putting Kansas back in front 36-33.
Baylor had one final shot, advancing to Kansas’ 39-yard line. However, Kansas’ defense, spearheaded by Roddy Orr and Seth Sahara, sacked Nate Bennett on three consecutive plays, sealing the victory.
"We showed heart today," said Kansas head coach Jordan McAlary. "This was a game where everything seemed to go against us at some point, but the guys kept fighting. Isaiah [Marshall] showed incredible toughness coming back, and the defense stepped up when we needed them most. It’s a win that defines what this team is all about."
With the win, Kansas stays in the hunt for a Big 12 title, while Baylor drops to 3-6 (2-4 Big 12), facing an uphill battle for bowl eligibility.

The McAlary Effect

Jayhawk Talk
Each week following their game Kansas Head Coach Jordan McAlary makes an appearance on KLWN to talk about the game, we'll include a few key points in this article.
On the Team’s Resilience in the Win Over Baylor:
"Man, what a game. It wasn’t pretty, and it sure wasn’t easy, but that’s what Big 12 football is all about. The guys showed incredible fight, especially dealing with the adversity of injuries. We had Isaiah [Marshall] and Avery [Muamba] both banged up, but they came back when it mattered most and made plays. It was a gutsy win, and I couldn’t be prouder of the effort out there."
On the Injury to Senior Cornerback Kaleb Purdy:
"Losing Kaleb is a big blow. He’s a senior leader, and to see him go down with a broken collarbone is tough. He’s been a warrior for us all year. We’re looking at a couple of months, so it’s possible he could return late in the season if everything goes perfectly. But right now, we’re focused on getting him healthy and giving other guys a chance to step up."
On Outside Linebacker Donte Cantrell’s Dislocated Ankle:
"Donte’s injury is another tough one. He’s been a spark plug for our defense, and to see him go down with a dislocated ankle is heartbreaking. We’re expecting about a two-month recovery. The good news is that he’s in good spirits and already talking about getting back for a bowl game if everything goes well. That’s the kind of competitor he is."
On Defensive End Lyle Carreon’s Season-Ending Injury:
"This one really hurts, man. Lyle [Carreon] tore his pectoral, and we’re looking at six to seven months of recovery. He’s been a relentless presence for us off the edge, and losing him is a significant setback. We’re hopeful he’ll be able to come back next season, but right now, it’s all about supporting him through this rehab process. Lyle’s a fighter, and if anyone can come back stronger, it’s him."
On How the Team Will Adjust Moving Forward:
"Next man up – that’s the mentality. It’s not easy losing three key defensive players like that, but this team has depth, and we trust the guys who are stepping in. We’ve got some young guys who are going to have to grow up fast, but that’s college football. We’ll use this as an opportunity to rally together, and I’ve got no doubt we’ll come out of it stronger."
On the Emotional Impact of the Injuries:
"Injuries like these are part of the game, but they never get easier to deal with. It’s especially hard when it’s your seniors – guys who have given so much to this program. We’re going to do everything we can to support Kaleb, Donte, and Lyle through this process. Their leadership isn’t going anywhere, and I know they’ll still be a big part of this team even from the sidelines."
