Third Row At Autzen: Podcast Episode 103

Jackson: "And welcome back to our 103rd episode of, "Third Row At Autzen". Here at the final segment of our show, we have a special guest with us. He's in his fourth year here at the University of Oregon. Behind his leadership, the Oregon Ducks have earned a unprecedented undefeated streak of 12-0 and 9-0 in the Big Ten. And with one win away, he can seal the season as one of the greatest Oregon football seasons in modern day college football. Sam, will you do the honors?"

Sam: "Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages! D-Generation-X proudly brings to you-"

Jackson: "Sam, Sam... No, not that honor. J-Just introduce our guest here."

Sam: "Oh, sorry. Here at "Third Row At Autzen", our guest, Coach Dan Lanning!"

Dan: "Thank you guys, thank you, glad to be here. Sam, where did you think you were going with that, buddy?"

Sam: "Hey, I was watching a little bit of the attitude era, like me and Jackson do from time to time, and uh... Yeah, that was turn I didn't know where it was going."

Jackson: "Hopefully YouTube doesn't strike us for it. Anyway, Coach Lanning, happy to have you and congratulations on the win in Pennsylvania. You guys surely had it rough over on the east coast last week."

Dan: "We certainly did. We understood the weather could come into play, but was not expecting that much of a impact. But, those types of conditions and games are what we live for. As you saw, it was brutal out there, we had some ups and downs, and some slopes thrown in there, but, at the end of the day, our guys prevailed.

Sam: "The team witness four defensive injuries in the first half: DT Terrence Green, DT Derrick Harmon, RE Matayo Uiagalelei, and MLB Langston Patterson. I can't imagine what our defensive coordinator, Tosh Lupol, was going through as he had to pull strings around to get off the field against Penn State's QB Drew Allar."

Dan: "Yeah, he wasn't much of a happy camper, I'll tell you that, but injuries are apart of the game. Lupol did a incredible job plugging in the holes, and it's very fortunate that the criteria of those that needed to be filled was to be a really big guy. Even so, as simple as that may be, physical attributes in the trenches is critical to each and every play. They play a deciding factor of who's pushing who aside, who's getting let through or denied that open opportunity. It really does me proud that our back ups stayed vigilant through training and rose to the call.

Jackson: "Yeah, kudos to the replacement. You guys don't know how important your part was in keeping the streak alive."

Sam: "Good job, boys!"

Jackson: "So, Coach, I gotta ask the tough question. Jodi Rogue, Dante Moore. All season long, we've had this burning question since Dillon Gabriel graduated, who was going to be the next guy behind the center. And unanimously, everyone thought it to be Dante Moore, the next guy up, and boom, out of nowhere, "here comes a new challenger". Jodi Rogue commits to the University of Oregon. Is there anything you can tell us how hard of a decision that was for you to name QB1?

Dan: "Woo, boy, don't waste no time getting to that one, did you? As great as Dante Moore is, you're right, he was the next guy up for certain. We've watched him develop over the course of his time with us. We had our ground work cut out for us to bring in the best possible prospects to aid Dante, but then we got wind that Jodi Rogue was available in the portal, everything changes. And be that as it may, Jodi had high interest in our program. A guy of his skills, his talent, you don't sneeze at and let it go by you, we had to bring him in. The problem was, we knew he was that good in spring camp, but we didn't know he was that great, then it "really" changed everything. But to make the long story short, I was really high on Dante Moore, and still am, he's a phenomenal quarterback and athlete, which is why the QB1 spot was up for grabs for him and Jodi. They knew coming into the season, there had to be one guy, and respectfully, Jodi wanted it more. They both came from the same background last year, playing back up to "the guy". When the call was made, Dante showed outstanding support and that says a lot about him and I have a great deal for characters like that. We know at any level, college or pro, Dante Moore is a name that would be greatly sought after. It just happens to be Jodi's time."

Sam: "Yeah, I feel that. That's a really, really tough spot to be in to make that kind of call. I mean, on paper, it looks easy, but once you see it in front of you, both guys offer the same, you'll pluck hairs trying to make sure which is the right call."

Dan: "Exactly. And I'll tell you this. Had it been Dante getting the snaps, I have no doubt he'd be having a hell of a season just as much as Jodi is. Both are two talented great QBs that is going to do so much more beyond the college level if the NFL calls their names.

Jackson: "There's no doubt about that. But let's not delay the congratulations, my good sir. For your great coaching, you've gotten our Ducks to the Big ten conference championship, where you'll face off against the #4 ranked school, the Maryland Terrapins. Congratulations on making it to the conference showdown!"

Dan: "Thank you, thank you. But you shouldn't be congratulating me, I've done nothing but call plays. You should be applauding the guys who execute them at the least near perfection. We wouldn't be there without them."

Sam: "I think they're going to more than happy with the adulation if we get that Big ten trophy."

Jackson: "So with this one week bye given to allow grace to the Army vs Navy game, thank you guys for your service, how important is it for the team, coming off a nine week stretch of games, to have this one week intermission before the big game?"

Dan: "It's very important. It's a big week for seven days. Now that the most harsh segment of our schedule is behind us, we get a bit of R&R, but it's back in the dungeon on Monday. We'll look at film, get some scrimmages in, and have the weekend to rest up. Some of the guys that have been banged up in those nine weeks deserve a moment to lick their chops. The guys missing out of action, the time off brings them back into the fold. It's just like any other week we've had, but a time to rest. And if I know my guys, they're not going to want to rest on their laurels until the job is done. After winning nine games straight, thee guys have all the momentum going for them and I can't imagine how bad their itching to get back on the field to win it all for us."

Sam: "Man, I promise you, as soon as everything dies down, all that adrenaline that's burning through them, there bodies are going to crash out. Cause the season is coming to an end, but there's more football to play with the bowl season just around the corner. You guys are projected to appear in the Rose Bowl, which is dated for January 2nd, 2025. That's a day short of three weeks. Making it there to that game, what will be the preparations?"

Dan: "More rest, more film, more life. As much as you want these guys to be zeroed in on football until the season is officially over, you can't overkill these opportunities for R&R. Of course, we'll practice and what not, but I want our guys to be more mentally prepared than physically, keep the mind working while the body recovers. All it takes is one injury to take away a career. One blunder of thought to let a play go wrong and it could be six the other way that determines the game. The college playoffs are one and done, as any game in the season, but once you lose, that's it. As of right now, our focus is the Big Ten championship, after that, the guys have to detox some of these weeks out of their systems so they can prepare for the next game."

Jackson: "Of course, the playoffs is a different beast. As you said, it's a one & done situation. The Oregon Ducks have been two the national championship game back in 2010 and 2014. Not to put false hope out there, cause if we're take the Rose Bowl, we could face either Georgia Bulldogs or Tennessee Volunteers, but what is inspiration that motivate you guys to win week after week, after week, to get to this point of a Cinderella story?"

Dan: "Oh, it's no Cinderella story, no sir. This is the real deal. I'm not just sitting on here, think high and mighty of my team, I legitimately believe in them that much, I have to as their coach, but as a fan of football, I love to. We have a great group of kids that comes together for a spell in the same place and time and make magic. It occurs everywhere and in every sport, so this is our showcase to the all that watches us. Those who are now joining us to those who's been a Oregon Duck fan for their entire lives, we incorporate their beliefs and faith in us, we channel that into a manifestation that's very intangible, but also visible to see, and that is simply success and glory. It's always been the vision of how the Oregon Ducks is one of the most dominant teams in the nation. All we're trying to do is live up to that moniker. And I strongly believe that this year could be our year."

Sam: "Yeah, well, when you got a guy like Jodi who is beasting up and down the field as Papa Duck, keeping all the other ducks, excuse my cliche, in a row, it's not far off to believe that this team can get it done!"

Jackson: "Always bias as ever, Sam. But I don't disagree. Jodi has been incredible this season and done some mind blowing things. Tying David Klinger for most touchdown passes in a single game, surpassing Vince Young for most QB passing and rushing yards in a season."

Sam: "Georgia Tech, eat your heart out."

Dan: "Jodi has been an absolute unicorn to us. Just as I said about Dante, any level of competition, any team would see instant success. The kid has the golden ticket in his left arm."

Sam: "Yeah, all that green he's wearing, his arm is like a money counter."

Dan: "I'm telling you right here, and right now. Jodi Rogue could be the next Tom Brady, if not better."

Jackson: "Wow... That's uh, that's a huge call for the sophomore QB. Big praise there."

Dan: "I know it sounds crazy when you look at what all Tom Brady has done, but people like at Patrick Mahomes the same, and he's damn near halfway there. Today's football grows so much crop of talent at a fast rate, it's insane. I have no doubts that Jodi will be just as great if he goes into the NFL today."

Jackson: "How you feel about that call, Sam. You buying in?"

Sam: "Yeah, I am. You look at all the talent we have in the nation, and those that make it into the league, there's clearly an overabundance. I think the only way Jodi doesn't make the cut, is simply that, not making the cut. The NFL QBs are immensely talented than they were back in the day. Cannons for arms like Mahomes, agile dual threats, many have copied the blueprint of Michael Vick. It's just a matter of where can Jodi fit in, where does he fit best for Sunday's football."

Dan: "And I'll tell you this. It took 19 years for Tom Brady to win 7 Super Bowls. Call me absolutely crazy. There's no ifs, but WHEN Jodi makes the league, if Patrick Mahomes doesn't do it, I believe Jodi will win 8 championships in lesser time. If whoever drafts Jodi when the time comes, they have to be smart enough to build around him to put him in the position to win. When Jodi wins, everybody wins. That's how much faith I have in him."

Sam: "Whoa..."

Jackson: "You can say that again. I don't know Coach, that's really a tall order to go up against. Eight championships?"

Dan: "Look, if Brady made that milestone possible, then anything is possible. All it takes is eight successful playoffs to the Super Bowl to find out, just eight. But all of that is hard beliefs and speculations. All we can factually focus on is putting hands on the Big Ten trophy."

Jackson: "You heard it here ladies and gents, Coach Dan Lanning, thank you for your time and good luck next week in Indianapolis!"
