Chapter II: Chapter II

Image

As the season was over, and there was nothing much to do outside of classes, Jodi spent majority of his time with Tiffany. If they weren't in class, they were working out together, kicking back and watching flix, perusing the city of Atlanta, the couple were just about inseparable. Feelings between the two grew over the course of the year despite his announcement to transfer to another school. Though Tiffany was initially against it, she was not irrational and understood. Furthermore, she eventually came around to support it. Though Jodi was a bit shocked by her supportive stance, it left a good look in his eye. But the elephant in the room had to be addressed. Neither one had undergone a long-distance relationship and neither definitely didn't know how to go about it, more so of worrying about each other's sincerity to wither.

Jodi reassures Tiffany of how serious he was of her, of them, staking claim that he would return for her. At first, Tiffany didn't buy it. She knew the temptation out there, with Jodi off the leash, any woman could potentially gnab him up from her. Jodi vouches that his loyalty to his word meant more to him than love or lust. If he was going to stand up for something, he was going to stand by as well. Be that as it may, Tiffany was still skeptical, but her love for him wanted to give him a chance, believe in him, as he proven that he wasn't like the other guys she's dealt with. After all, it was his to fuck up anyway, a girl like Tiffany don't come by that often.

Days pass, and the final day in Georgia approaches for Jodi. No matter how much of the void he filled with spending time with Tiffany and friends, saying goodbye was ever bittersweet, be it temporary or permanent. With his last day on Campus being the next Saturday morning, the group of friends decided to go out and make it a memorable night. It was no doubt that Jodi was kind of regretting not staying in Georgia to finish school, life here for him was a vibe, but there was a bigger picture at hand. Jodi needed to be the man on the gridiron. He needed to put that half-assed freshman year behind him and make a statement, and the only place to do that was in Oregon. But that was neither here or there, on his mind. His only goal for the night was to make it as special as possible, especially for Tiffany. After filling the night with drinks and laughter, the two found some alone time back on campus. Eyes were glazing over, hands were roaming and the liquor was talking. And the conversation? Well, let's just say he earned his personal Heisman trophy...

With the transfer portal had come and gone, Jodi made his move to Eugene, Oregon. Excited about his future playing with the Oregon, Jodi reached out to Tyrone, but to no avail. Over the course of a few hours, Jodi repeatedly tried to get in touch, but still nothing. It was unlike Tyrone to go awol on Jodi unless it was something serious, but even then, he would have at least texted back that he had his hands tied. Slightly worried, Jodi couldn't do nothing but focus on the task at hand, which was settling in at the University of Oregon. Upon his arrival, the hype around Jodi was surprisingly on the uptake. Despite having guys like Dante Moore and Austin Novosad, who could easily run the offensive unit, people were excited about Jodi and his flare to the game. Though head coach Mario Cristobal, during his tenure, had met with Jodi in his junior year in high school, Oregon had went another direction and seized recruitment for Jodi. You can say things sort of come full circle. But while fans of Jodi were happy to have him here, playing for their team, Jodi knew it wasn't a short order. There were six other quarterbacks that was just as hungry to be that guy.

With the end of summer rearing it's head, media day for the team was upon them. After getting a few photos in uniform and general head shots, Jodi was also called for an interview by one of the school's journalist for the school's PR.

Nadine: Jodi, thank you for sitting down with me and taking time out for a few questions in this interview. First, I would like to say, welcome here to the University of Oregon. I know we're excited to have you here, how are things with you and your stay here thus far?

Jodi: Thanks for having me. I'm good though. Can't say I have much to complain about with my transition here. I'm just blessed to be here, to be able to play the sport I love, much alone in front of a crazy fan base here.

Nadine: Yeah, yeah, we love our Ducks! Go Oregon! [laughs] So, let's get to the thick of things, Jodi. Your freshman year, you were at Georgia Tech. After playing half a season there, you entered the portal. A lot of teams were clamoring for you, what made you choose Oregon as your sophomore destination?

Jodi: Ah, kind of a long story, so to shorten it up, I basically had contact with the former coach here, Coach Cristobal. He came out his way, sought me out while I was in high school, but things didn't pan out for a commitment. I might've been here last year, but you know, things happen for a reason. But coming here now, it's just a great atmosphere here. The air is fresh and crispy, the water is A-1, and the competition in the Big Ten is crazy. Oregon is always building something, always churning out great athletes, Dillon Gabriel, Bo Nix, Justin Herbert, Marcus Mariota, many, many more. I just want to be a part of that and hopefully do something great here.

Nadine: So what can we expect from you this season? As you know, we have a lot of quarterbacks, and everyone is looking to make the top spot. Is there a game plan for you to weave through these oppositions?

Jodi: Nah, no game plan at all. It's just hard work and dedication. I absolutely didn't come here to step on toes. If coach sees fit that another is suitable to be above me, then that's his call. All I can do is make it hard for him to make that decision. I just want to develop my game to the best it can be. So, I really don't have a game plan. Just show up, be the first one in, practice, be the last one out. If I'm the best quarterback here, I'm coming for that spot. If I'm the best water boy here, I'm coming for that spot too [laughs], but lets be glad I'm throwing a football and not water around.

Nadine: Alright, Jodi. How excited are you to wear green and yellow this season?

Jodi: Very excited. More excited to get those nightmare uniforms on. That's one thing I'll admit, Oregon always had some fly ass uniforms, even when the color scheme don't call for it, but y'all, or shall I said, we, since I'm here now, make it work. But yeah, I'm excited to represent green and yellow for the Oregon. We're going to do big things while I'm here.

Nadine: Okay, Jodi. Well, I appreciate your time for us, we want to wish you a good luck when the season starts.

Jodi: Thank you, much appreciated...

It's been a few weeks since media day, college football was starting next week, but for Oregon, their first game will be in two weeks. Jodi had a hard time focusing on his academics, as he still been trying to get in touch with Tyrone, but his phone would constantly go to voicemail after several rings. Jodi knew something was up, but couldn't just up and leave school. Jodi made a few extra calls home to friends, and even they didn't know the whereabouts of him. It was strange, his best friend just up and vanished without a word. It seem like every friend back home had just drifted apart and started doing there own thing. It didn't sit right with him that his brother was missing.

Suddenly, one day while at the library, Jodi gets a call from a unknown number not saved in his phone. Jodi takes a gamble answering it, hoping it would be Tyrone.

"Hello? Ty, this you?", Jodi readily asked.

"No... It's Prisha..."

"Prisha? What do you want? Why are you calling me?"

"I... I, I wanted to hear your voice, Jodi. It's been so long since we've spoken... I miss you... I know there's a lot of ugliness between us, but everyday without you, I just feel like I'm waiting to be with you."

"Prisha, stop", Jodi cuts her off. "Listen, I've moved on. You have to move on too, focus on your family, you know, the one you stole from me? The one we could've had, but you were too busy fucking around behind my back."

"Jodi, please, I'm sorry... I didn't meant too. I was drunk, okay? I didn't-"

"Prisha, cut the bullshit, alright? Have some dignity. Of all days, today is the day you don't want to. I'm not hearing it. Like I said, I moved on. There's nothing else between us. As I said at our graduation, you're dead to me..."

Those four words rekindled and echoed in Prisha's chamber of short temper. Not only did they cut deep within her once again, they also resonated with the bomb she had prepared to drop in Jodi's lap.

"I guess I'm about as dead as your friend Tyrone..."

"Excuse me? Come out of your face like that again?", Jodi's face was screwed up and nearly confused as if he mistaken what he heard.

"Oh... You didn't know?", Prisha cynically asked.

"Know what?"

"Tyrone... He was murdered... He was found dead in the San Ramon Creek, near the Hap Magee Ranch Park."

"Nah, nah, you're fucking with me. You're just saying this dumb shit to get back at me."

"I'm sorry, Jodi... I got to go... I love you..."

Prisha silently hung up the phone after dropping the news on Jodi. Jodi was in major disbelief, in confusion. With a quick search of the news in the location, there was indeed a murder. Jodi gives the online article a skim through, but it was not disclosed of who the victim was as they said no identification was found on the male victim.

"It could've been anybody man. That could be anyone..." Jodi again calls Tyrone's phone. "Come on man, come on... Fuck!.." Once again, there was no answer. What Jodi's ex had said, started to really set in for him. Was Tyrone murdered?..
