UNLV Crushes Utah State Behind Orji’s Dynamic Performance
LAS VEGAS, NV — In a game that was never in doubt, the UNLV Rebels bounced back in emphatic fashion, dismantling the Utah State Aggies 41–10 at Allegiant Stadium on Saturday.
Quarterback Alex Orji put on a clinic, completing 86% of his passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 129 rushing yards and another score on the ground.
From the opening drive, UNLV’s offense clicked like clockwork. The Rebels marched down the field in just nine plays, capping it off with a 3-yard touchdown run by Jaylon Glover to take a 7–0 lead. Utah State responded with a 44-yard field goal, but it would be the closest they came all night.
UNLV’s second-quarter surge was fueled by big plays in the passing game, highlighted by Orji finding his running back in space and Glover making two defenders miss to set up a touchdown pass to tight end Var'Keyes Gumms. The Rebels’ defense fed off the momentum, recording multiple sacks and snagging a key interception before halftime. Two more field goals sent UNLV into the break with a comfortable 20–3 advantage.
Utah State showed brief life in the third quarter, stringing together a long drive that ended in a touchdown to cut the deficit to 20–10. But Orji’s mobility proved unstoppable—he ripped off a series of chunk runs, and the drive ended with a second Glover rushing touchdown.
From there, it was all Rebels. A crisp play-action strike in the red zone extended the margin, and in the fourth quarter Orji escaped pressure yet again for an 8-yard score. The UNLV defense shut the door with a fourth-down stop and kept the Aggies from adding any late points.
The win improves UNLV to 8–2 and keeps them firmly in the Mountain West title race. The highly anticipated "Island Showdown" is finally upon us, as UNLV will host the number one team in the conference, Hawaii (9-1, 6-0 MW) next week.
