Reminds me of a Lamar Jackson style QB. All around threat. I can see Rogue in a Bama uniform.

Agent, That's a good comparison, but that's too high of a compliment right now.

Chapter III: Pigskins & Snakeskins

It's been two weeks since Jodi got the news from his mother that his car was stolen. After filing a police report, it took law enforcement about three days to find Jodi's car at a junker site, owned by an old man that already had the car stripped for parts. But following the old man's cooperation, the police did apprehend the suspect who turned out to be Derrick, the guy Prisha had been seeing behind his back. Finding out who it was, Jodi decided not to press charges, despite his mother's incite. Jodi wanted to take things in own hands. For Jodi, the disrespect had gone too far...

Monday, school had let out. Everyone was still hype about Monte Vista going to the State championship game. It would be there very first time in the school's career even making it this far, let alone the playoffs. With Monte Vista settled, they learned their opponent's in Saturday's game will be the Upland HS Highlanders, a formidable team that Monte Vista has never beaten in all it's days. Each time they've met on the field, Upland had showed why their the most superior team of the two. Jodi had to experience that time after time in season. Now on a grander stage, where there's a lot on the line, it was eating at Jodi if it could be done. This was his senior year, his last shot to make history for the school he played for, the first to put Monte Vista on the map. That was his focus, his main concern, at least until Alice, Prisha's good friend, came along.

"Hi, Jodi..."

Jodi looks over his shoulder, noticing Prisha's friend, Alice, standing behind him before turning his attention back onto the view of the football field that he looked over the second level balcony, out through the massive windows. "Hey, Alice..."

"How have you been feeling recently? I saw you up here sitting alone, I thought I'd come up and check up on you."

"It's not like you to worry about me, Alice. You're good people, but we don't cross paths like that. So what's the real reason why you're up here?"

As Jodi saw right through her attempt to break the ice, Alice just lets out a deep sigh before taking a seat on the colorful plush chair quietly. "Well, It's Prisha. She hasn't been herself since you know... You two have stopped spoken."

"So? Should I care? I'm just trying to focus on this football game we have this Saturday."

"I understand", Alice said. "But Prisha is your girlfri-"

"She is not my girlfriend." Jodi iterated as he cut off Alice from completing her sentence.

Silence fall between the two for a moment as Alice sought to find a new approach. "Jodi, I know what she did was wrong, really. And I'm not taking that hurt or distrust from you, but she really cares about you. I know how she can be towards you and clearly others, but you're special to her. That's the truth coming from me, who sees it from my perspective."

"The problem with your prospective is that it's not her perspective. Even if that was true, so what? What you expect me to do? Just go back to her?"

"No, Jodi. But just talk to her, or at least just hear her out. I understand you're still mad, upset, all those things, but do you really think you should be holding onto all of that negativity inside you? What about the championship game? Do you want to play with a clouded head and cost the school the biggest opportunity against a team we've never beaten?"

"Don't make this about football, that ain't got nothing to do with her or the situation. The girl fucking cheated on me. I put up with a lot of her shit and she does the one thing that crosses that line. It's unacceptable Alice, she must be held accountable."

"The hold her accountable, Jodi. Talk to her and make her be accountable for her actions. Tell her what she did wasn't right and how much it hurt you. It's okay to do that, to tell her that. Even if things don't work out like I hope it does, then maybe this will be a lesson for her to never cross that line again."

Jodi sat in silence, listening to Alice. Her soft voice and kindness towards him weighted on his shoulders with embrace. A lot of animosity was built over time, and playing time on the field was his only real release of it. But it wasn't enough at this point. Once the game was over, the bright lights were turned off, home alone between four walls and his thoughts, it ran right back to her, Prisha. Twisted with so many emotions, heartache, anger and sadness among them. He couldn't understand how an orphan like him could still have such a big heart to people that dove knives into it. But once again, here Jodi was, putting his pride aside.

"Where is she? Still here?"

"Yes, she's just in that hallway. I told her to wait there for you in case you did want to talk to her."

"I don't want to, but I'll hear what she got to say. It's been two weeks after all..."

"Okay. Just please try to be rational with her, give her a chance to let her say what she needs to."

"Fine..."

"I think I follow you on Instagram, I'll DM you to see how things went. I have to run, I'm late for practice."

"Sure. See you."

"Bye."

With that, Jodi takes a moment, allowing Alice to make her exit down the stairs behind him that led to the main lobby and front entrance. Jodi drops his head in his hands, mushing his face around to release the tension just before getting up and making his way through the double doors into the hallway.

"So... You gong to say something? Or just stand there all sad and shit?" Jodi directly asked.

"I... I thought I knew what I was going to say, but then seeing you... I'm just lost for words."

Jodi then pivots and casually waves at Prisha, "Alright, good luck finding your words, I'm going home-"

"Baby! Wait, please... I'm just..."

"Just what, Prisha?"

Prisha takes a moment, swallowing her fears and shame as best she could, "I'm sorry for what I did... What I did to you. I was out of line..."

"That's it? You're just sorry?.. You won't even acknowledge what you're sorry for, that's how little of me you think. And this is what I dealt with for five years?"

"Stop, Jodi... I'm sorry for stepping out of our relationship and talking to another boy." Prisha admitted. Words that Jodi wanted to hear, but it did nothing for him internally. "But I swear to you, I didn't cheat on you, we didn't do anything!"

"Yeah, sure y'all didn't. He just politely pull up to your house with flowers and candy and got nothing in return out of it? Yeah, okay."

"Jodi, please, you know I'm not that kind of girl. You know I'm still a virgin, I wouldn't dare give it away to just anybody... I've been saving myself for you, honestly."

Hearing that, something in Jodi told him that those words rung true. The two became an item when they were 13-years-old, and what "general" 13-year-old girl is having sex at that age? Unfortunately for Jodi, he doesn't fit that description as he gave up his virginity to another girl, whom was 16, over the summer, just before he and Prisha hooked up. Besides, with Prisha's attitude towards people, not many guys would seem to approach the former beauty pageant, unless your name was Derrick.

"And there's something else I have to tell you, that I'm really, really sorry about."

"Something else? Please don't, I swear to God if Tyrone's name come outta your mouth-"

"Ew! No! Jodi, just listen baby, please. Just please don't get mad."

"You're asking me not to get mad when I've already been mad for two weeks now?"

"Well, don't get madder... Jodi, I'm sorry okay? The real reason why I went on a date with Derrick was because... I asked him to take your car."

And that's when Jodi blew his stack...

Image

"YOU FUCKING DID WHAT??? TELL ME YOU DIDN'T JUST FUCKING SAY WHAT I THOUGHT I HEARD PRISHA!?"

"Please, stop yelling!"

"FUCK THAT!! WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU!?!? WHAT WERE YOU THINKING??? HOW YOU JUST GOING TO ASK THAT MOTHERFUCKER TO STEAL MY SHIT?? THAT WAS MY SHIT!! MY CAR!!"

"Jodi, stop, please..." Prisha begged and pleaded Jodi to bring his tone of anger down, but all Jodi could see is red. "Babe, the car wasn't work-"

"FUCK OUTTA PRISHA! THAT WASN'T JUST ANY FUCKING CAR, THAT WAS A CAR THAT MY FOSTER GRANDFATHER HAD PASSED DOWN TO ME. I DON'T CARE HOW BROKEN IT WAS, IT WAS STILL MY SENTIMENTAL VALUE! AND YOU TOOK THAT FROM ME, YOU DESTROYED THAT!"

"I'm sorry, Jodi. I'm sorry. I really am, I didn't know." Prisha sobs.

"Of course... You didn't know..." It was at this point, seeing Prisha tear up brought Jodi to halt his anger and reel it in some. Still fuming, Jodi takes a moment to gather him-self. "I'm hearing several sorry, but a lot of "I... I... I". As it always been about you, and only fucking you. It's never about us, let alone me for one lousy minute. You're always fucking with me, putting me down, disrespecting me. You didn't even believed in me. You didn't believe that I could make the football team and look at me, leading this mother fucker to a state championship game. For someone who was supposed to be in my corner, you was always against me.

"Jodi... Please..." Prisha continued to plea with the only words that she can muster.

"Jodi, please, nothing... You fucked up..."

With no more words for Jodi to express, he takes one good look at her pitiful state, almost relishing in the sight of Prisha in defeat. After all the tantrums, disrespect, insults, tease, and whatever Prisha threw his way, Jodi was now on higher ground. With a aching heart pounding vigorously in his chest, Jodi silently takes his leave. Only taking two steps away from her, Prisha makes one last cry for Jodi.

"Jodi, please don't leave me... I love you!" Prisha sobbed her words through her chattering teeth. For the first time in five years, Jodi heard unspeakable words, words he never thought he'd hear. Jodi didn't know how to feel outside of being stopped in his tracks by the words. It was clear that Jodi had extremely strong feelings for Prisha, but he felt trapped after what's been done to him. So without saying another word, Jodi continue to silently leave Prisha behind.

Jodi needed to clear his mind and blow some steam. Instead of waiting for the bus ride home, he took the walk. While it's a long walk, Jodi didn't care at this point. He just wanted to be left alone. But some ways down the route, Jodi spots Tyrone haggling another shady individual over some cannabis. The guy didn't look like Tyrone's usual dealer, but Tyrone didn't look too worried.

"Yo! Jodi, over here man."

This was the only time that Jodi had reluctantly wanted to be bothered with Tyrone, but if Tyrone was rolling, then maybe some bud would help chill things in his mind. "Sup Ty."

"Yo, what's up? You look like someone stole your childhood." Tyrone daps up the dealer and walks off with Jodi.

"You know that guy?"

"Who? Eric? Yeah, that's my mans from around the way. I meant him before you. I was trying to be cool and roll with his crew, but was not to be. So, here I am walking with sad boy Jodi. What's going on with you bro? Is it Prisha? Yo dawg, have you spoken to her? She's been hounding me to get to you. It gotta be serious if you know she's talking to me."

"Yeah, that's a first..." Jodi then proceeds to tell him everything that happened. As emotional as it was, Jodi kept some details out.

"Wow man, that's tough. Putting you in that bind, kid. I don't even know what to tell you, but she's foul for what she did. Shit... Even crazier that anyone stepped to her. But then again, not many people know y'all two are a thing, or were..."

"Doesn't matter how many people knew, she disrespected me and the relationship, and my fucking car."

"That's a fact. She took the whip? Grandpa's whip? That's crazy. You should make her replace that car. I'm not sure if it's a rare car or not, but that's a car that's been in the family. Grand Dad gave the orphan baby his chick magnet, maybe she was onto that scheme bro."

"Ty, shut up. I'm just heated bro. I'm over it so much bro... You gonna roll up what you bought?"

"Yeah, I was gonna wait til I get home, but shit, you look like you need a few pulls, I gotchu bro."

Just as Tyrone was beginning to dump the guts out a philly, Jodi spotted a familiar face coming around the backside of Starbucks, one of the few chains in Danville. As the two got closer to the person of interest that seem to work at Starbucks, Jodi realized it was Derrick, the guy Prisha had it in with.

"Yo... Hold my bag for me bro, I gotta talk to this nicca."

"Jodi, hold on man, who that?"

Jodi jogged up ahead a bit before it was too late to catch up with Derrick that was taking out trash. As Derrick placed the last bag in the dumpster, he returned to the front side of the store as he looked in his phone, unknowingly walking into Jodi's path."

"Yo Derrick, what's up? Can I holla' at you for a minute?"

Image

"Jodi? Hey man, I wasn't expecting to see you here. What's up Tyrone?"

"Sup." Tyrone responded as he focused on drying his newly made blunt.

"You guys want to come in? Whatever you guys want, it's on me."

"Nah man, we're just passing through. But I think you know why I'm here though."

"Ah, yeah." Derrick worriedly said. "Look man, Prish-"

And that when Jodi cold cocked him.

Image

With one swift blow, Derrick stumbles back into the outside dining table chair, losing his balance and falling to the ground. Rocked, Derrick instantly grabbed for his jaw with a grimace of pain on his face.

"I can't say I probably didn't deserve that. Jodi, I'm sorry man. I-"

Jodi stood over Derrick supine body with balled fist with eyes laser focused on Derrick. "I had it up to hear with the apologies today. Stay the fuck away from Prisha and away from my residence. Whatever you thought it was, dead it."

Jodi steps back over Derrick, walking off in the direction of his home. Tyrone would soon follow him, but not before looking down over Derrick who was still holding his jaw. Tyrone looks at him with pity, shaking his head. "Above your pay grade my guy, above your pay grade."

After a while, the two stopped off by a gazebo that stationed in the middle town square to fade off some tension with the handcrafted blunt Tyrone had made. After talking and venting a bit, Tyrone pulling a couple jokes to get Jodi off edge, the two went their ways to ready for the next day. It went without saying that Jodi had appreciate Tyrone's camaraderie. Though he be on some bullshit sometimes, Tyrone was his road dog. Jodi finished his quiet walk home listening to some old Max B songs. As he approached his house, he noticed a red car on the walk path, a 2023 Audi e-tron GT, one of the top EVs that came out this year. It first came to mind who was here that Cassia knew with this kind of whip. Normally Cassia would give Jodi a heads up on visitors as it allowed him time to straighten up things. But looking closer to the car windshield, there was a white card note. Jodi approaches the vacant car, looking at the note that remained under the driver's windshield wiper. The name Jodi, written in cursive calligraphy. Jodi takes the note from the car, opening it, inside the bulging envelope was a fob key to the Audi, along with a small professional card that read "To my future husband". Instantly, Jodi knew who this was from, but didn't understand why. Flipping the card to the back, it further read: "Drive unto the sunset, where greatness awaits. And when you can't find it, look up at the moon and stars, there you will see them looking for you." Signed, Prisha.

While this definitely didn't make up for a lot of things in Jodi's mind, in his heart, it made him feel like a total dick how hard he went on Prisha. Once again, trapped in Prisha's vice grip...
