MCCRAY LOOKS IN A TD PASS IN OT
---
Kent, OH - Six turnovers, 11 sacks and four missed field goals. To call Kent State's loss to Akron an ugly game may be an understatement.

The game was a back and forth affair with both teams struggling to move the ball at times.

Kent State jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter via a three yard rushing touchdown by Ky Thomas and a 41 yard field goal by Andrew Glass.

Akron tied the game in the third when Noah Perez added a 41 yard field goal after Ben Finley had found Alex Adams for a 54 yard score in the second quarter.

Kent State went back on top 17-10 late in the third quarter when Tommy Ulatowski took it in himself from three yards out.

Andrew Glass, who missed a 53 yard field goal in the second quarter, had an opportunity to extend the Kent State lead with just under two minutes to play but could not connect on a 22 yard field goal attempt.

Akron's offense moved the ball quickly and Finley connected with Max Whisner for a ten yard touchdown with less than thirty seconds left on the clock. Kent State did manage a first down on a 20 yard Ulatowski pass to Chrishon McCray but ran short on time, sending the game into overtime.

Kent State won the OT coin toss and elected to play defense.

Akron needed just three plays to find the endzone with Charles Kellom scoring on a ten yard run. Perez nailed the extra point and put the Zips up by seven.

After what seemed like the 50th sack of the day on Ulatowski he stood in the pocket and found Hayden Junker for a gain of 24 yards down to the Akron 11 yard line. Ulatowski then connected with Ky Thomas for a gain of seven yard before rolling right and hitting Chrishon McCray for the touchdown. After some debate on the sideline Kent State elected to attempt to put the game away with a two point attempt. Ulatowski was hurried and had his pass batted down, ending the game in an Akron victory.

Kent State drops to 6-5 overall with a MAC record of 5-2 while Akron improves to 7-4 with a 6-1 conference record, putting the Zips in the drivers' seat for a spot in the conference championship game.

MAC FOOTBALL KENT STATE GOLDEN FLASHES
Coaches Corner

Offensive Coordinator Jordan McAlary
By Don Knotts | @theotherdonknotts | November 24, 2024, 1:11pm EDT

Each week in the days following Kent State's game I will spend a few moments chatting with members of the coaching staff. I'll share some key points in this column.

This morning I spoke with offensive coordinator Jordan McAlary following Kent State's overtime loss to Akron.

A tough in-conference loss and a rivalry game at that. What's the reaction?
Well, you get down for sure. Especially with the way that things played out. We talk a lot about not getting beaten by a team twice so you process and move on. You don't want to second guess and what if it to death so you process and move on.

Talk me through the choice to go for two.
Just kind of an old adage where you go for two at home in that situation. Being aggressive. After the touchdown there was a lot of energy on the sideline and we felt it was an opportunity to take advantage of momentum and potentially put the game away. Again it's a situation where we don't want to dwell on it and what if it forever so we live with the decision and the outcome and move on.

A bit of a tough day offensively. Lot's of pressure on Ulatowski. What do you do to address that?
We'll be looking at potentially making some adjustments to the offensive line. You can't be successful giving up sacks like that and we're lucky Tommy made some plays and good decisions to keep us out of worse trouble.

We saw a lot more of Ky Thomas and not much of Gavin Garcia at runningback. Any insight there?
Just wear and tear. Ky was fresh so we went with him. He ended up getting banged up late and Gavin got some snaps. We'll see who's most ready next week.

Can you give us a player of the week?
Ky Thomas stepped up for us and had a nice game.

ULATOWSKI IS SACKED ON THE FINAL PLAY OF THE GAME
---
Buffalo, NY - At one point early in the second quarter Kent State led Buffalo 14-7. Then disaster struck and the Bulls outscored the Flashes 23-7 to take a 30-21 lead into halftime.

Kent State scored first on a six yard run by Curtis Douglas, who got a handful of touches due to an injury to Ky Thomas. Buffalo answered with a 68 yard touchdown pass from CJ Ogbonna to Nik McMillan. Kent State went back on top early on the second quarter when Tommy Ulatowski connected with Isaiah Batton for a five yard score.

A sack in the endzone a few minutes later by Buffalo made it 14-9. Then Buffalo put together a long drive and scored on a one yard TD run by Jacqez Barksdale. Less than a minute later Buffalo was in the endzone again, this time with C.J. Bazile scooping up an Ulatowski fumble and taking it to the house.

Gavin Garcia slowed the bleeding for Kent State, punching in a TD run from a yard out to make it 21-23 Buffalo. The Bulls added another Ogbonna to McMillan TD pass before the break.

Kent State bounced back in the third quarter, outscoring Buffalo 10-0 with a two yard TD run by Douglas and a 19 yard field goal by Andrew Glass.

Ulatowski put Kent State back on top with a seven yard TD run early on in the fourth quarter but Buffalo retook the lead shortly thereafter with an Ogbonna TD pass to Chance Morrow.

With just over two minutes left to play Ogbonna tossed his fourth touchdown of the game, connecting with JJ Jenkins from 48 yards out. The kick put Buffalo on top 43-38.

Kent State continued to fight, driving down to the Buffalo 28 before Ulatowski was sacked on the final play of the game. It was the sixth sack of the game for Buffalo.

Kent State falls to 6-6 overall with a 5-3 record in MAC games. Despite the back to back losses Kent State has reason to celebrate after winning just one game last season and going 0-11 against FBS teams.

"We're not necessarily satisfied with the results this season." Head coach Kenni Burns said. "But we certainly realize where we are in comparison to where we were at this time last season."

Kent State will await a potential bowl invite. If they do receive one it will be their first since 2021 and just their fourth since 1972.
