UNLV Stays Hot, Powers Past Wyoming in Mountain West Showdown
LARAMIE, WY -- In the rarefied air of Laramie, where the elevation rises over 7,200 feet, the UNLV Rebels rose higher — not just on the scoreboard, but on the defensive side of the ball.
The Rebels’ defense delivered a suffocating performance on Saturday, stifling the Wyoming Cowboys in the red zone and shutting down critical scoring chances in a 24-6 victory at War Memorial Stadium. It marked UNLV’s third straight win, pushing them to 4–1 and affirming their place among the top of the Mountain West.
For all the yards Wyoming managed to gain, points proved elusive. The Cowboys reached the doorstep of the end zone multiple times — but time and again, UNLV’s defense slammed the door shut.
Perhaps the most deflating moment for Wyoming came in the third quarter when they orchestrated a promising drive capped by a 27-yard run by Terron Kellman, setting up first and goal at the Rebels’ one-yard line. But UNLV held firm. Three plays later, they were forced to settle for a short field goal — their second of the day — making the score 10-6.
“That red zone stand was everything,” said UNLV linebacker Marsel McDuffie. “We bend, sure. But we don’t break.”
Later in the 4th quarter Wyoming again marched into scoring territory. Quarterback Kaden Anderson lofted up a prayer to wide receiver Chris Durr Jr in double coverage, who somehow managed to not only come down with the catch but also break the tackle of both defenders, then continued running down field for a gain of 56 yards, bringing them to the 24-yard line.
But when they faced fourth down just inside UNLV’s 17-yard line, they opted to go for it instead of trying a long field goal — and the Rebels made them pay. Head coach Dan Mullen dialed up a perfectly timed blitz and Anderson never had a chance, going down in the backfield for a drive-killing sack that turned the ball over on downs. What could have been a chance to make it a one-point game turned into a momentum shift — and a dagger.
“Those are winning plays,” said coach Mullen after the game. “We prepare all week for moments like that, and our defense showed exactly who they are.”
On the ensuing drive the Rebels put together a methodical drive that burned four minutes off the clock and was finished with an 11-yard touchdown run by Jaylon Glover. Another failed fourth down conversion on the next drive led to a second Glover rushing touchdown to put an exclamation point on the win.

did a good job keeping them off the scoreboard even though it seems like they generated some offense
