Vaugh did his job building Coastal into a powerhouse but the truth is you know some big time program with deep pockets like USC just makes sense.. Plus Vaughn has the personality to not get lost in the L.A. sports scene. He will have the Trojans battling the Dodgers and Lakers for Front page news as soon as he takes over..

Has The Kade Vaughn Sweepstakes Begun?

Image

Conway, SC. - The end of every college football season brings nerves and uncertainty, especially for head coaches living on the edge of success. The close of the 2033 campaign was no different. While the biggest exit came on peaceful terms; LSU’s Brian Kelly announcing his retirement; several others weren’t so fortunate. USC’s Dan Lanning, Pittsburgh’s Sonny Cumbie, Colorado’s Trent Bray, TCU’s Hugh Freeze, and Georgia Tech’s Jedd Fisch were all dismissed as athletic directors nationwide moved swiftly to hit reset.

And yet, one name continues to dominate coaching circles — Kade Vaughn. Although no team can formally interview the Coastal Carolina head coach until the Chanticleers are either eliminated from the College Football Playoff or crowned national champions, that hasn’t stopped seven programs from submitting official interview requests.

“The big boys have checked in on Vaughn before and gotten nowhere — Kade shut them down immediately,” a source close to the program confirmed. “But this time, things feel different. He’s told Coastal leadership he wants to hear everyone out.”

The long-running tension between Vaughn and Coastal athletic director Mike Buddie remains a central subplot. “It’s no secret those two are still at war,” the source added. “The question is, who’s bluffing? Is Kade just entertaining offers to pressure Buddie into showing more respect to a potential three-time national champion coach, or is he serious about walking? Either way, it’s a poker game, and the ‘Pit Boss of the Palmetto’ always plays to win.”

While no official decision looms, the possibility of Vaughn swapping his trademark teal aviators for another color feels increasingly real. Coastal has reportedly granted interview permission to five programs — LSU, Colorado, TCU, USC, and one undisclosed applicant — while simultaneously blocking any approaches from fellow ACC members. The message is clear: Coastal isn’t folding just yet.

Still, it’s worth exploring what could happen if Vaughn does move on. Defensive coordinator Tony White would be the most natural successor, but his loyalty to Vaughn runs deep. Having witnessed Buddie’s strained relationship with his current boss, White is seen as unlikely to accept a promotion under the same conditions. Sources also indicate he has received interview interest from Colorado and Pittsburgh, and he’s expected to pursue those options regardless of what happens in Conway.

Recently dismissed USC coach Dan Lanning could also be in play. Once hailed as a rising defensive mastermind and the architect of Oregon’s resurgence, Lanning shocked many by leaving Eugene for Los Angeles in 2027. But a 60–31 record and consecutive 7–5 seasons led to his firing. Coastal might see a reclamation opportunity there.

Other intriguing candidates include former Tennessee and current Tulsa head coach Josh Heupel, former Notre Dame and current Troy head coach Marcus Freeman, current Iowa head coach Alex Golesh, former Kansas State and current Toledo coach Chris Klieman, former Baylor and current Air Force coach Dave Aranda, Ohio State offensive coordinator Brian Hartline, and Clemson defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi.

Any successor would face two pressing questions: can they live up to the towering standard Kade Vaughn has set over nine years in Conway, and how much influence will Mike Buddie exert over his next handpicked coach?

Until the confetti falls at NRG Stadium, those answers will remain suspended in the humid South Carolina air; along with the futures of several programs, and the livelihoods of the men who lead them.

:curtain:

We'll see what happens!

Let’s see what the devoted readers think will happen next:

Do y’all think Coach Vaughn is going to stay at Coastal and ride it out amid all the drama with Buddie
OR
do you think he’s finally going to leave?

If you’re predicting a departure, you’ll need to call your shot — where does Vaughn go, and who replaces him in Conway?

You can also hedge your bets by guessing that he stays and including a backup prediction for where he might land if he doesn’t.

The closest correct answer will earn the right to have a prospect in next year’s recruiting class named after them.

No more coaching decisions will be announced until the conclusion of the 2033 playoffs, so you have until then to lock in your answers
