BIRTH OF THE KINGSLAYER

July 15th, it was early morning and the temperture for the day was expecting to be blistering in the mid 90's. Recks got up early for a personal workout session outdoors before heading to shoot arounds. Around 11:30, Recks made his way to his hotel to relax before game one of the Finals tonight. Just as he made his way to the entry door, a familiar voice caught his attention.

"Look who it is, if it isn't the champ him-self!" shouted Recks' father from the driver side of a rented Subaru.

"Pops? Yo what's up!?" Recks makes his way over, also seeing his mom, his son Kairos, and Khyri riding along. "Hey Ma, so good to see you. My boy! Come here and give your old man a hug!"

Kairos hopped out the car hurrily, jumping into Recks' arms.

"What's up? Y'all got the whole gang here."

"We came to see you Dad."

"See me? Y'all came all the way here to see me play?"

Kairos nodded as he pull a piece of paper from his pocket. "Look Dad, I want to show you something."

"What you got for me?"

Kairos showed off his report card, getting straight A's in his classes and passing to the next grade.

"Whaaaat? Look at you kid, smart just like your daddy! I'm so proud of you son!"

"But I'm smarter!" Kairos shot back jokingly.

"You challenging me already? Ain't been here five minutes." Recks assaults Kairos with tickles as he laughs and scream uncontrollably. "Okay! Okay! Uncle! Uncle!"

Recks' father helps Khyri out of the car as they all gather for a brief reunion. Recks couldn't take his eyes off Khyri. It's been over six months since they last seen each other and Khyri has shown incredible growth. Her stomach was as big as if she's carrying twins and her skin was glowing. Yet, Recks sense some sort of sadness from her feigned smile. Seeing that triggered his acknowledgement of negligence. Not being there for the doctor appointments and etc.

"You look beautiful as ever." Recks hugs and kisses Khyri.

"You're just saying that." Khyri cradles her belly as Recks rubs it. "How many you're expecting?

"Just one."

"Damn, that's a big ass baby!"

"Do you think it's a boy or girl Dad? I hope it's a boy."

"I don't know kiddo, could be neither. Could be elephant, you see the size of her tummy?"

"Wait, girls can have elephants?" Kairos sincerely ask curiously.

"I thought you said you were smarter than me?" The whole group laughs as Kairos remained bleek to the joke.

"Y'all really didn't have to all the way out here, I do appreciate seeing you guys though."

"Nonsense, we was couped up the house, your father had his vacation time in, we thought nothing better than seeing our son in his first NBA finals." Recks' mom pinched his cheek as she kissed him after.

"Y'all got reservations here?"

"Yup. Come on over here son and help me with the bags. Let us settle in, it's been a long flight over. I can't see how you boys do it night to night."

"It's something I can't get use to Pops, but I do enjoy the travel part of it."

The family spent a few hours together, enjoying conversation and refreshments. Recks was surprised to see his father get a hand of some suite tickets for the finals, for both here in Philly and Sacramento. But he guess he got it like that if he got pull. Khyri grabbed Recks' attention.

"Hey, I got to talk to you about something."

"Okay, what's on your mind?"

Khyri hesitates, dwaddling her thoughts on the spur. "I... I really don't know how to put it in words."

"Is it serious?"

"Yeah..."

"Okay, then let it wait."

"No, I can't-"

"Let it wait, Khyri. I'm not blowing you off. I got a game tonight, my focus needs to be on that. Soon as the playoffs is over, it's me and you and nothing else. I'm sorry I haven't been there for your development through your pregnancy, but you will have my full undivided attention when this is over. So take the time to collect your thoughts, mull over what you wanna say and we'll have that talk. I'll make it my first priority. Okay?

Khyri complied with a nod, "okay."

"Come on, cheer up, it can't be that bad." Recks kissed her on her forehead.

Little did he know, Recks was in for a rude awakening. Khyri had a big bomb to drop in the lap of Recks, but Recks had his focus elsewhere. The severity is possibly detrimental. It would've been best to learn now than later, but the paths in life was set in stone at this moment...

Later that night...

Recks and the Sixers were mere moments away from game one of the NBA finals. Doc made his way into the locker and called for everyone's attention.

"Alright guys! Listen up! This is it... 7 months, 95 games later, we finally arrived at the biggest stage of your careers. Now, some of you have been to this dance before, some of you are here for the first time, but all of you are here together. We had a lot of ups and downs getting here, but we did something special to make us finalist in the NBA post-season. I need you guys to go out there, play hard, play smart, give it your all. Starting tonight, it's about you, it's about the team, it's about bringing home what you guys worked hard for. Don't let this trip to the finals be for nothing guys. Family on three... 1, 2, 3!"

"Family!!" The team rallied in unison. Just as the team was about to make their way to the court, eyes were met at the door, lo and behold, Allen Iverson.

After a round of salutations, A.I. chimed in with his words to the team.

"You don't need to hear it from me, but I'm going to tell you anyway. This game, is your game. The game afterwards is yours too. So on the next ones. It's been far too long since Philly been on top in the NBA. 21 Years ago, I was the man called upon on and I let the team down."

Iverson shifts his eyes towards Recks who was intently listening.

"But tonight, is your night. This series is your series. This is your time to make up for what I couldn't do 21 years ago. 400 NBA players and I'm looking at the best 15 men in the finals... Do it for Philly... Bring home the title... Go home champions... Right here, this is family like Doc said, this is "brotherly love". One more time, family on three. 1,2,3!"

"!!FAMILY!!" The team rallied louder. The team starts to make their way out the locker room, but A.I. holds back Recks for the moment.

"Yo, you've been the main of the playoffs and held it down when Joel got injured. Don't let this team down. You may be the rookie, but this team is yours, even if you didn't know it. No pressure man, just show them who runs this like you been doing baby."

"Fa'sho, preciate it man. I'ma get this chip for us. Don't worry, it's coming home. What's a king to a kingslayer?"

"I like that attitude! Lets go fam, get out there and slay!"
