David Potter Holds Off Late Charge to Win F2 Thriller in Budapest, Ties Season Win Record

BUDAPEST, Hungary - David Potter continues to rewrite the Formula 2 record books—and he’s doing it with style.

The British driver claimed a dramatic victory at the Hungaroring on Sunday, fighting off a fierce final-lap challenge from Jehan Daruvala to win the Feature Race and collect his seventh win of the season, tying the all-time F2 record for most victories in a single year.

Starting from third on the grid, Potter wasted no time making his presence felt. He got a lightning launch off the line, slipping past Theo Pourchaire in Turn 1 before diving up the inside of Daruvala on Lap 3 to take the lead. From there, he never looked back—at least not for long.

“It was all about getting track position early,” Potter said. “Once I got by Jehan, I just tried to manage the tires and stay consistent. But man, that last lap… that was something else.”

Indeed, the final lap turned what looked like a controlled win into a heart-stopper. Daruvala, managing his tires to near-perfection, mounted a late push and briefly retook the lead heading into Turn 1. But Potter wasn’t done. With championship instincts kicking in, he muscled his way back through, regaining the top spot and holding off the Indian driver through the final sector.

The two crossed the line separated by just 0.271 seconds, with Pourchaire finishing third to round out the podium.

“That was one of the hardest fights I’ve had all year,” Potter admitted. “Jehan drove a brilliant race. I had to dig deep for that one.”

The win not only extends Potter’s championship lead, but also puts him in elite company. His seventh victory of the campaign matches the record previously held by Charles Leclerc (2017) and George Russell (2018), solidifying his status as one of the most dominant drivers in recent F2 history.

“David has shown week in and week out why he’s the real deal,” said his team principal. “He’s got the pace, the racecraft, and the mentality. It’s all coming together.”

Next up: the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium, where Potter will have a chance to break the record and further tighten his grip on the championship.

“I love Spa,” Potter said with a grin. “Let’s see if we can make it eight.”
