he could be, but I feel the Pirates would be looking for more than I want to give up at this point. Trying to move from a position of strength to fill in a spot on the big league roster, save the prospects to go full Dave Dombrowski in the offseason :diabolical:

I'll have to pay more attention to scouting next season :rip:

I just had it on auto then get to the draft screen and only one guy had more than 50% scouting tf

Boston, Seattle Swap Big Leaguers A Week Before Deadline

Boston, MA. -In a deadline move that underscores both clubs’ willingness to deal from strength, the Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners have agreed to essentially a player-for-player trade sending outfielder Wilyer Abreu to Seattle in exchange for right-hander George Kirby, league sources confirmed Monday.

The deal represents one of the rarest forms of trade deadline currency: contenders exchanging established big leaguers to address roster imbalances. For Boston, it alleviates a crowded outfield picture while solidifying the rotation behind Garrett Crochet and Brayan Bello. For Seattle, it injects much-needed offense into a lineup that has sputtered outside of Julio Rodríguez.

The Red Sox had been engaged with the Mariners for weeks, with early talks centered on Logan Gilbert, who is under control through 2027 and currently pitching to a sub-3.00 ERA. Boston, according to sources, pushed for added pieces in the deal to match Abreu’s runway, which extends through 2030. Seattle held firm.

Negotiations paused before the All-Star break but reignited when the Mariners stumbled out of it, dropping five of six by narrow margins. The inability to score more than three runs in any of those losses sharpened Seattle’s urgency.

That urgency opened the door for Kirby, a durable four-year pro with postseason experience but the least favorable contract horizon of the Mariners’ young rotation core. His 4.08 ERA is the highest among Seattle’s five starters, but evaluators view him as a dependable mid-rotation piece with more upside in a different environment.

For Boston, the question all season has been how to deploy Ceddanne Rafaela—whether at shortstop, where he’s played capably but with health concerns, or in center, where he’s an elite defender. With Roman Anthony producing since his own call-up, the club was facing the prospect of leaving Rafaela out of position, or sacrifice either Duran or Abreu.

Duran’s breakout year (.300-plus average, top-five in the AL in hits, runs and doubles) effectively took him off the table, leaving Abreu as the most logical trade chip. At 25, Abreu has followed up a strong rookie campaign with steady production: a .254/.309/.424 slash line, 17 doubles and a career-high 16 home runs while batting mostly out of the two-hole.

“Duran is their engine,” one AL scout said. “If you move him, you risk losing the identity of the lineup. Abreu was the piece that made sense.”

Seattle, meanwhile, has cycled through options next to Rodríguez with little success. Randy Arozarena, acquired last summer, has struggled and been pushed into a platoon. Victor Robles has hit below the Mendoza Line. Even with Griffin Conine arriving from Miami, the offense remained thin.

Abreu gives them a controllable, everyday option with both power and on-base skills, and immediately lengthens a lineup that has leaned too heavily on Rodríguez.

To balance the roster spots, Robles was included in the deal, heading to Boston as a fourth outfielder. The Red Sox also sent Lucas Giolito, rehabbing a hamstring strain, to Seattle as part of the exchange.

Executives around the league viewed the trade as pragmatic for both sides. “It’s not often you see contenders swap established pieces, but it’s clean,” one NL executive said. “Boston frees Rafaela for center, Seattle adds a real bat, and neither side strips the farm.”

Kirby, a Rye, N.Y., native and lifelong Yankees fan, didn’t shy away from the irony of joining Boston. “I may have grown up hating the Sox, but now? Bawstin Strong,” Kirby said. “Can’t wait to take the mound at Yankee Stadium—it’s going to be electric.”

The Red Sox expect Kirby to join the club in Los Angeles and debut on July 25 against the Dodgers. With Rafaela moving back to center, Boston will split shortstop duties between Trevor Story and David Hamilton for now, though special advisor Kyle Red declined to rule out further moves.

Big time trade, that. But Kirby's going to have to get that ERA down. Always hesitant about those guys in the 4s because some of those starts are probably 5s and 6s.

I was tempted to just keep Rafaela in the in-field, cause I really liked Abreu. But the more I thought about it, we needed another arm. Crochet is Crochet, but Bello is up and down. Dobbins and Houck have been solid, but I can't count on it to last all season. And Buehler has been garbage lol

Kirby's peripheral ratings are solid, so I'm banking on it being just the sim inflating his ERA and not his ratings overall. And then, I played the first game with him :dead:

couldn't have been a worse start

Freeman gets a seeing eye single, Pages draws the walk on a questionable 4th ball in the 3-2 count. Ohtani takes a 2seam fastball in and at the knees 450 feet to straight center on the 1st pitch. I left him in too long and he got tattooed again to get chased, but he had a stretch where he struck out 5 in a row too. Very up and down
