An LA Clippers Story.

In the sprawling city of Los Angeles, where palm trees line the streets and the sun casts a golden glow over Hollywood's glitz and glamour, basketball reigns supreme. Yet, in the world of professional hoops, a stark contrast divides the city: the celebrated legacy of the Los Angeles Lakers and the underdog tale of the Los Angeles Clippers.

As the 2008-09 NBA season rumbled on, the Lakers were riding high, basking in the glory of their storied past and eyeing another championship run. Their roster, led by the indomitable Kobe Bryant and the formidable Pau Gasol, was a testament to excellence and dominance. Across town, however, the Clippers were battling obscurity, their achievements often overshadowed by their more illustrious neighbors.

This is where our story begins. With the Clippers struggling to find their identity and yearning for respect, a new General Manager steps into the fold. Tasked with the monumental challenge of transforming a franchise long viewed as the Lakers' lesser counterpart, this GM sees beyond the shadows cast by their cross-town rivals. Instead, he sees potential, opportunity, and a chance to write a new chapter in Los Angeles basketball history.

The 2008-09 season is more than just a starting point; it is the beginning of a journey. The Clippers' roster in flux, yet brimming with untapped talent and potential. Every decision, every trade, and every draft pick will shape the team's destiny. It's a tale of rising from the shadows, challenging the status quo, and proving that even in the shadow of giants, greatness can emerge.

This story will begin in NBA2K9, and I will work my way through the series of older 2ks, adjusting rosters to match the new universe created in this story.

Episode 1: A New Era?

Image

Mike Hobbs stepped into the dimly lit restaurant, the kind of place where deals were made over fine wine and whispered conversations. Nestled in the heart of Los Angeles, it was a sanctuary for the city's elite. Tonight, Mike wasn't here for the cuisine; he was here per invite for a life-changing opportunity.

As he approached a secluded corner, a well-dressed man sat alone, sipping a glass of red wine. The man looked up, revealing a familiar face—Steve Ballmer, the renowned CEO of Microsoft. Ballmer stood, extending a hand with a wide, enthusiastic smile.

"Mike! Great to finally meet you in person," Ballmer said, his voice booming in the quiet space.

"Mr. Ballmer, the pleasure is mine," Mike replied, shaking his hand firmly.

"Please, call me Steve," Ballmer insisted as they both took their seats. A waiter promptly arrived, offering menus and taking their drink orders.

Once the formalities were out of the way, Ballmer leaned in, his demeanor shifting to a more serious tone. "Mike, I asked you here tonight because I believe you have what it takes to help me transform the LA Clippers."

Mike raised an eyebrow, intrigued but cautious. "Transform the Clippers? That's a tall order."

Ballmer chuckled. "Indeed it is. But let me give you some context." He took a sip of his wine, then continued. "Donald Sterling, the current owner, is about to be embroiled in a major scandal. Revelations of his racist remarks are about to surface. When they do, it'll be a PR disaster for the league."

Mike's eyes widened. He had heard rumors, but nothing concrete. "That's... troubling."

"It is," Ballmer agreed. "But I've been in discussions with NBA Commissioner David Stern. We have a plan to ensure a smooth transition of ownership, keeping the worst of the scandal under wraps. Donald will step aside and relinquish control, citing old age and deteriorating health. Stern can't afford to have the league's image tarnished."

Mike nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. "So, what does this have to do with me?"

Ballmer leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with determination. "I want you to become the new President of Basketball Ops for the Clippers. I believe you have the vision and the expertise to turn this team into a successful franchise."

Mike was taken aback. "Me? Back in the NBA? That's... quite an offer."

Ballmer smiled. "I've been following your career, Mike. Your analytical mind, your ability to read the game, and your knack for talent scouting are exactly what this team needs. You have never had the full backing from an owner before. Something which I can assure you of this time. And don't worry about my commitment—I'll be able to balance my role at Microsoft with owning the Clippers. I'm passionate about both."

Mike felt a mix of excitement and apprehension. His mind wandered back to his days as the GM of the Utah Jazz. It was the 2002-03 season, and he had been riding high on the team's success. Then, in a move that blindsided him, head coach Jerry Sloan had maneuvered his way into the dual GM - Head Coach role, pushing Mike out. The betrayal had stung deeply, leading Mike to step away from the NBA. He returned to Boston, focusing on his family and watching his kids grow up. Over the years, various NBA teams had reached out to him, but none had offered the right opportunity or level of control—until now.

"It's a huge responsibility. The Clippers have been in a rut for years," Mike said, grounding himself in the present.

"I know," Ballmer admitted. "But with the right leadership, we can change that. I have the resources, and you have the expertise. Together, we can build a winning team."

The waiter returned with their drinks, providing a brief pause in the conversation. Mike took a sip of his whiskey, pondering the proposition. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but it also came with immense pressure.

"Steve, this is an incredible offer," Mike said slowly. "But if I take this job, I'll need full control over basketball operations. I need to be able to make the decisions I think are best for the team."

Ballmer's smile widened. "That's exactly what I want. I need someone I can trust to make the right calls. You'll have my full support."

Mike felt a surge of confidence. This was his chance to make a real impact, to shape the future of a struggling franchise. He extended his hand. "Alright, Steve. You've got yourself a new President."

Ballmer shook his hand enthusiastically. "Welcome aboard, Mike. Here's to a new era for the LA Clippers."

As they raised their glasses in a toast, Mike couldn't help but feel a sense of destiny. This was more than just a job—it was the beginning of something extraordinary. The Clippers were about to embark on a journey to greatness, and Mike Hobbs was ready to lead the way.

Steve Ballmer Announced as New Owner of LA Clippers.
March 19, 2009.

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the NBA community, Steve Ballmer, the high-energy CEO of Microsoft, has officially been announced as the new owner of the Los Angeles Clippers. The sale comes after longtime owner Donald Sterling decided to sell the team, citing deteriorating health as his primary reason for stepping away from the organization.

The news broke early this morning, and reactions have been pouring in from across the league. Sterling, who has owned the Clippers since 1981, has been a controversial figure in the NBA, known for his various legal battles and contentious relationship with players and the league. However, his departure was unexpected and has left many in the sports world stunned.

"I never thought I'd see the day," said one NBA executive. "Sterling has been a fixture in the league for so long. This is truly the end of an era."

Ballmer, known for his exuberant personality and successful tenure at Microsoft, brings a new level of excitement and energy to the Clippers. His acquisition of the team marks a significant shift in the franchise's trajectory. Ballmer has expressed his commitment to transforming the Clippers into a top-tier team, leveraging his business acumen and passion for basketball.

"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of the Clippers family," Ballmer said in a statement. "This team has incredible potential, and I am committed to bringing a championship to the great fans of Los Angeles. I can't wait to get started and help lead the Clippers to new heights."

The NBA community has responded with a mixture of surprise and optimism. NBA Commissioner David Stern praised the move, highlighting Ballmer's proven track record of success and his enthusiasm for the sport.

"Steve Ballmer is a dynamic leader with a genuine love for basketball," Stern said. "His vision for the Clippers aligns perfectly with the league's goals for the future. We believe he will be a tremendous asset to the Clippers and to the NBA as a whole."

The sale of the Clippers comes at a critical time for the franchise. The team has struggled in recent years, failing to make a significant impact in the playoffs. With Ballmer at the helm, there is a renewed sense of hope and excitement among Clippers fans.

Ballmer's immediate focus will be on building a competitive team. Sources close to the situation have indicated that he is already in discussions to bring in new front office personnel to help steer the Clippers in the right direction. Among the names being floated is former Utah Jazz GM Mike Hobbs, known for his sharp basketball mind and strong leadership qualities.

The impact of Ballmer's ownership is expected to extend beyond the court. His involvement with the Clippers also marks a significant milestone in the NBA's history, as it underscores the growing intersection between technology and sports. As one of the leading figures in the tech industry, Ballmer's influence is likely to bring innovative changes to the Clippers' operations, marketing, and fan engagement strategies.

As the news of the sale continues to reverberate throughout the league, one thing is clear: the Los Angeles Clippers are poised for a dramatic transformation under Steve Ballmer's leadership. Clippers fans, who have endured decades of ups and downs, can now look forward to a future filled with promise and potential.

Mike Hobbs Takes the Reins: A New Era for the Clippers.
March 20, 2009.

In a move that signifies a seismic shift within the Los Angeles Clippers organization, Mike Hobbs has been named the new President of Basketball Operations and General Manager. The announcement comes on the heels of Steve Ballmer's recent acquisition of the team, marking the beginning of what Clippers fans hope will be a brighter, more successful era.

As the Clippers limp through the final stretch of a dismal season, sporting a disheartening 17-51 record, Hobbs' arrival brings a much-needed breath of fresh air. His first order of business: taking over the GM duties from Mike Dunleavy, who will remain head coach for the remainder of the season. Dunleavy, whose dual role had clearly taken its toll, will now focus solely on coaching as the team embarks on a grueling Eastern Conference road trip.

The Return of Mike Hobbs

For those who have followed the NBA closely, Mike Hobbs is no stranger. Once the promising GM of the Utah Jazz, Hobbs' tenure was abruptly cut short in the 2002-03 season when Jerry Sloan ousted him in a controversial power play. Disillusioned, Hobbs retreated from the basketball world, choosing to spend time with his family in Boston. For years, he watched his children grow, occasionally fielding calls from NBA teams that sought his expertise but never finding the right fit. Until now.

Hobbs' return to the NBA, under the ambitious and energetic ownership of Steve Ballmer, is a statement of intent. Ballmer, fresh off his role as Microsoft's CEO, is bringing his signature enthusiasm and business acumen to the Clippers, and he sees Hobbs as the perfect partner in this transformative venture.

"I am honored and excited to join the Clippers at such a pivotal moment," Hobbs said at his introductory press conference. "This franchise has immense potential, and I look forward to working with Coach Dunleavy, the players, and the entire organization to build a winning culture."

A Tumultuous Season

To say the Clippers have struggled this season would be an understatement. With a 17-51 record, the team has been plagued by inconsistency, injuries, and a lack of cohesion on both ends of the floor. As they head off on a 10-day Eastern Conference road trip, the focus will inevitably shift to Hobbs and his vision for the future.

Hobbs is expected to attend several games during the road trip, using the time to meet with Coach Dunleavy, players, and other key personnel. His presence alone is likely to inject a sense of urgency and optimism into a team desperate for direction.

The Road Ahead

So, what can we expect from Hobbs' tenure? For starters, his reputation as a keen basketball mind and talent evaluator precedes him. During his time with the Jazz and the Knicks, Hobbs was instrumental in assembling competitive rosters and had a knack for finding diamonds in the rough. The Clippers, who have historically struggled with player development and scouting, stand to benefit greatly from his expertise.

One immediate challenge will be assessing the current roster and identifying core pieces to build around. With the NBA Draft and free agency looming, Hobbs' decisions in the coming months will set the tone for the Clippers' future. Will he look to build through the draft, leveraging the team's likely high pick? Or will he make bold moves in the trade market to accelerate the rebuild?

Another critical aspect will be his relationship with Dunleavy. The veteran coach, now relieved of his GM duties, will need to align with Hobbs' vision for the team. Their ability to work together effectively will be crucial in navigating the rest of the season and laying the groundwork for future success.

A New Hope for Clippers Fans

For a fan base long accustomed to disappointment, the arrival of Ballmer and Hobbs represents a new dawn. The Clippers have spent decades in the shadow of their more illustrious neighbors, the Lakers, but with the right leadership, they have the potential to carve out their own legacy.

As the team embarks on this road trip, all eyes will be on Mike Hobbs and his initial moves as the new GM. His decisions, both immediate and long-term, will shape the destiny of the Clippers for years to come.

In the end, the Clippers' journey from perennial underdogs to contenders won't be easy, but with Hobbs at the helm, there is finally a sense of direction and hope. The road to redemption starts now, and Clippers fans can finally dare to dream of better days ahead.

Game Recap by David Aldridge.

Image
In a commanding performance at The Palace of Auburn Hills, the Detroit Pistons overpowered the LA Clippers, cruising to a 108-90 victory. The night belonged to Antonio McDyess, who led the Pistons with a stellar double-double, racking up 24 points and 17 rebounds, and showcasing why he remains a force in the paint.

Detroit wasted no time establishing their dominance. McDyess set the tone early, controlling the glass and providing crucial second-chance points. His defensive presence was equally impactful, as he tied for the team lead in blocks with two, reinforcing the Pistons' interior defense.

Tayshaun Prince was the orchestrator, dishing out 12 assists and facilitating a smooth offensive flow. His court vision and unselfish play allowed Detroit to maintain a balanced scoring attack, keeping the Clippers’ defense on their heels all night.

Allen Iverson brought his trademark intensity to the floor, notching three steals and turning defensive plays into fast-break opportunities. Iverson's energy and disruptive play were pivotal in keeping the Clippers' backcourt under pressure, resulting in multiple turnovers.

The Clippers, despite a promising starting lineup struggled to find their footing. Randolph and Gordon had moments of brilliance, but the team as a whole couldn't match Detroit’s execution and consistency.

Detroit's supporting cast, including Arron Afflalo and Kwame Brown, played crucial roles. Afflalo’s perimeter defense and Brown’s presence in the paint were key in stifling the Clippers' offensive efforts.

As the final buzzer sounded, the Pistons celebrated a comprehensive team win, underscored by McDyess' outstanding performance. For the Clippers, this game was a stark reminder of the challenges they face on their Eastern Conference road trip. With their record now at 17-51, the Clippers must regroup and find ways to spark their struggling season.
