That bench unit ain't bad at all. Feels a piece or two away from being the team to beat.

Lakers stumble on opening night, lose to Sacramento
Turnovers the major source of second half letdown
Recap of Lakers/Kings game played on October 22, 2024

Just over six months ago the Lakers ended the Kings season thanks to LeBron James spectacular performance to get the Lakers into the playoffs. Imagine how the Kings felt when the new schedule dropped and found out they would be hosting the Lakers on opening night. Of course this wouldn't be the same Laker team, but this would also not be the same Kings team either. That was apparent from the start as both teams relied on role players to get the game going. Austin Reaves, expected to have a breakout season got off to a great start, scoring eight points in the first quarter and Anthony Davis established himself early with seven points, three rebounds and three assists. Keegan Murray got the Kings finally going after the Lakers had rushed out to a quick lead. Murray scored eight points in the quarter, knocking down two three-pointers and rookie Devin Carter off the bench had six points. The Kings ended the first quarter with a 28-24 lead. Second quarter didn't start out well for the Lakers. They found themselves staring at an eleven-point deficit with eight minutes to go in the half after De'Aaron Fox scored a layup. The Lakers ran off seven straight points to cut the Kings lead down to four, 38-34, but the Kings increased their lead back to nine, 48-39 with 1:31 to go. The Lakers ended the quarter scoring the last six points and cutting the deficit down to just three at halftime, 48-45. Austin Reaves led the Lakers with 11 points in the half while both James and Davis had nine a piece. Keegan Murray was leading the Kings with 11 first half points and De'Aaron Fox was filling up the stat sheet with nine points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals. The Lakers had committed 10 turnovers in the half which the Kings turned around and scored 16 points off of. In the third quarter the Lakers tried to push the tempo of the game up a little getting out in transition and getting some easy baskets helped them finally catch the Kings at 56-56 and ultimately take the lead 58-57 (that would be the last time the Lakers led in the game) as De'Aaron Fox took over. Fox ended the quarter scoring nine points on his way to putting up 21 points in the second half alone. LeBron James cut the Kings lead down to two points early in the fourth quarter, 75-73 then the Kings eight straight to push their lead to ten, 83-75. The Kings knocked down six three-pointers in the final quarter which would carry them to a 103-88 victory. De'Aaron Fox led the Kings with 30 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three steals. Keegan Murray finished the night with 17 points (4-of-9 3Ps), three rebounds, three assists and six steals. Domantas Sabonis added 16 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals as the Kings forced the Lakers into 19 turnovers and scored 27 points off of them. LeBron James beginning his 22nd year in the league led the Lakers with 28 points (11-of-13 FGs), eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Anthony Davis just nearly missed a triple-double, with 21 points, 13 rebounds, eight assists and one block. Austin Reaves was the only other Laker to finish in double figures with 15 points. The new supporting cast for the Lakers didn't have it going collectively tonight. Buddy Hield was 2-of-8 from the field, Vanderbilt was 2-of-7, Hachimura was 1-of-5, Russell was 1-of-5, Christie was 1-of-3 and Vincent was 0-of-2. Combined they went 4-of-19 from the three-point line. As a team the Lakers finished 7-of-23 from the three-point line while Sacramento finished 16-of-40.

Lakers drop second straight game to start season
Their inability to value the basketball is glaring
Recap of Lakers/Suns game played on October 24, 2024

As much as the off season was full of positive outlooks on what this years Lakers roster could accomplish, it seems that whenever there is a bump in the road, the panic button is hit immediately, and chaos ensues. Many would say that the Lakers have overachieved the past two seasons. Nobody expected them to get the Western Conference FInals two years ago and nobody expected them to get out of the first round last season when they had to face the number one seeded Thunder, so I don't think it's fair that just after two games in the regular season that it needs to be "find a solution to this or else." If the season was decided by two games then yes now would be the time to panic, but there are still 80 games left. Let's all remember the Lakers won their first two games to start the season against Denver and Phoenix and the year before that they lost their first two games. Now the way in which they have lost their first two games this season can be looked at and called out. Lets start with the most obvious, 39 turnovers in the first two games. You can't score if you don't have the basketball and the Lakers, who last year were one of the best teams in the league when it came to not turning the ball over have gotten sloppy. To make my case, through the first two games James has 8 turnovers, Russell has 6, Reaves has 5, Davis, Hachimura and Christie each have 3 while Hield and Vincent have 2 each. How many turnovers have they forced against their opponents? 15 would be the answer, nearly almost 3 times more turnovers than they force. On Tuesday night, the Lakers were outscored 55-43 in the second half by the Kings. Tonight, they were outscored 73-59. They went into halftime against the Kings down by three, 48-45 and ended up losing by fifteen, 103-88. Tonight, they went into halftime down 53-51 and ended up losing by sixteen, 126-110. Devin Booker scored 21 of his 35 points in the second half along with six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Bradley Beal had 26 points (4-of-6 3Ps), three rebounds, four assists and one steal and Kevin Durant had a pretty quiet night by Kevin Durant standards, with just 17 points on 7-of-18 shooting. Austin Reaves led the Lakers with 30 points, hitting 10-of-15 shots from the field including 4-of-5 from the three-point line. Anthony Davis finished with 25 points on 8-of-12 shooting, but was in foul trouble for most of the game, only playing 25 minutes. LeBron James had 18 points, seven rebounds, eight assists and two blocks and off the bench Buddy Hield added 15 points, knocking down 3-of-7 three-pointers. Despite these glaring areas the Lakers need to make immediate improvements on this team is capable of putting together 48 minutes of basketball that can lead to victories and against good teams. The Lakers will now come back home and get ready for their home opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
